Safari beta stops running
I really like what you are doing with Foxmarks. I have a question though. With the Safari Beta (as it runs in the background on my 10.5.6 Mac,I expect that the sync will occur regularly and automatically without me starting Safari, or doing a manual sync. However, the control panel consistently says that Foxmarks is not running. It appears as if something is stopping foxmarks. I have mobileme installed which seems a culprit earlier, but it may also be clamxav which seems to running sometimes when foxmarks stalls. any thoughts?

Thanks to everyone for their reports. We have identified this bug: it's caused if Growl is not installed, and an automatic sync tries to send a growl notification. We'll have a fix out soon, but in the meantime you can manually do the following:
* Quit Foxmarks for Safari
* From your home directory, open Library > Foxmarks> FoxmarksPrefs.plist
* Edit the key "useGrowl" and set the value to "false"
* Save FoxmarksPrefs.plist
* Start Foxmarks for Safari
I’m relieved

Inappropriate?I just intalled clamxav and will run with that for a while to see if I can replicate any problems. Meantime, can you send us your log file to betatest@foxmarks.com (mention you came from here so we can keep track!). Hopefully there will be some clues in the log. You can find this on the Advanced panel of our preferences panel.
Thanks! -
Thanks Max,
I sent you the log file a few minutes ago, please let me know if you don't receive it.
Also, am I right in assuming that the safari sync will work even if safari isn't running (unlike the firefox version)?!?
Mark -
Inappropriate?Thanks Mark, I'm checking the log right now.
Meantime I've found no obvious interactions with clamxav.
And you are correct that the sync app is separate from Safari - bookmarks on OS X are a system wide resource rather than a private browser resource - they can be altered by more than just Safari (Mobile Me for example). So it made sense to architect the sync tool as a client of the OS X sync services rather than part of Safari. -
Inappropriate?Same problem here. FM has not run sync for several days. Pref pane says it's not running, but when I attempt to manually start, an alert window pops up saying it already is. (Same alert window shows up on nearly every computer login.) Activity Monitor says it is not running. Log file sent in.
ClamXav NOT running, but installed. MobileMe not used. No RSS problems. -
Inappropriate?Thanks Terry - I'll follow up with you from the beta email you sent.

Inappropriate?Version 0.0.23 no longer stops running for me.

Inappropriate?Thanks Terry, this is the most current comment I put on: http://getsatisfaction.com/people/jim...
I don't know why I hadn't done this earlier but I just did a complete uninstall of the Safari Foxmarks using the provided UnInstaller. Then I did a fresh install. At the moment I am getting successful sync. BUT, the icon continues to go away by itself as it just did as I was writing this note.
I don't recall when I started using version 0.0.23 but one my prior logs recorded "2008-12-18 21:35:47 -0500: Info: ===== Started Foxmarks for Safari.app version 0.0.23 on Mac OS X/10.5.6 (Build 9G55) ====="
I have been having the disappearing icon problem prior and since 0.0.23 and of course the fresh re-install was with version 0.0.23.
What has changed, back for the good, is I can now sync without errors but still have to do a manual start-up when the application crashes. -
Inappropriate?We released an updated beta (0.0.24) which will hopefully fix this problem. Please upgrade, give it a spin and let us know these problems go away.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Its getting better, that is the program runs longer with 0.0.24 before crashing. See attached log file.

Inappropriate?Hi,
I am also getting this problem on two Mac's both are running 0.24 but this issue was also happening on the previous version. I am running MobileMe on both systems. I can start the application again from the app folder but when i do this on some occasions it fails to sync the bookmarks. When this happens i need to restart Safari and then try to sync fomr the Foxmarks control panel.
Thanks
John

Inappropriate?I am consistently having crash problems with the new 0.0.24 update. I have a log file from the past couple of days and can provide it if you want. Once I restart foxmarks from the control panel the syncs are working properly between my Mac and PC's (& vice versa.) However shortly thereafter the Safari Foxmarks crashes and its icon goes away.

Inappropriate?I seem to be having no problems with version 0.0.24 on two 10.5.6 PPC machines, with two different profiles.
However, I do not use MobileMe, nor do I allow the FoxMarks icon to be placed in the menu bar. I have found that menu bar items are often trouble-causing (including the present [Apple supplied] AirPort menu bar icon). I use as few menu bar items as possible. -
Inappropriate?Hello,
I am not sure if this is related to the same problem, but further to my initial post on this, I have now noticed the following.
After the machine is restarted Foxmarks starts (Icon on menu bar) after the first sync, the icon disappears.
If I then manually restart Foxmarks the icon starts to "rotate" and the CPU utilization is up around 100%. after a while if I check the COntrol Panel for Foxmarks it indicates that the last sync was successful but does not indicate that it is still trying to resync (Icon still rotating)
If I try to restart the sync from the control panel I get a message indicating I should have patience and wait for the current sync to finish....... this never happens and the only way to stop the process is to Quit it via the Activity monitor. -
