the user is the loser
I don't need your extra's in Foxmarks. Pity that a nice little program is disappearing and will be replaced by a so called update nobody needs but you yourself

Happy to see there is a great number of users sharing my problem with your Xmarks. I will drop Foxmarks too if i am obliged to share your ads. You just could have asked for some contibution and I would have paid.
I’m sad

Hi,
What did you expect? Developing and maintaining a synchronization system like FoxMarks is a full time job. You don't pay for the software, right? So how are those people maintaining FoxMarks supposed to make a living? Who pays the hardware where your bookmarks are stored? Who pays the people providing you with free technical support? Would you yourself work for free? Do you think that the people at FoxMarks/XMarks are true spirits living from glory, fame and clear water?
Let's put an end to a myth : one way or another, you always have to pay for the services that you use. If you don't pay with money, you have to pay by paying taxes, by looking at ads or by accepting to participate in a data collection process (which XMarks actually is now).
If you don't like this idea, you can always develop a synchronization system yourself. Or pay a developer to do so.
As a software developer, I'm really fed up with this strange behavior of many Internet users: I wan't to get everything for free(software, music, images,services,...) but I'm not myself ready to accept to do any work without being paid for it. Remember: people telling you that software should and must be free (in the full sense of the word) are liars. Every work must be compensated one way or another. All the rest is gossip.
Regards.

I would niety mind at all paying for foxmarks as long as I don't get the Xmarks build in ads -
MainSoft, it is how they are doing it, which is staining the why. They are focring an opt-out set of features that harm the privacy of the users, something which is forbidden in some countries by law, and very much frowned upon by millions of people. The issue is choice, it has been taken away and replaced with things we perceive as harmful. So we are leaving. -
Noone asked me if i would accept to pay for this - guess what i would.
Im happy to host it on my own server, so no problem their neither. Ofc i know that they need something to eat - just i dont like the way this hase gone. If you do something to pay your bills with it - than just let everyone KNEW about it from the start, dont get a project started and than change the philosophy of it when you see that it could become a money maker. -
Inappropriate?@MainSoft couldn't agree more. No such thing as free, only costs borne by someone else.
@Albert: You can turn off the discovery features - it's in the preferences. Personally I find they work surprisingly well. But hey you can't please everyone.
I’m chucklin'

If that's so I may update, nobody announced it is possible to turn that off. And again, it's not cause I don't want to pay. I just don't want my machines entered by all kinds of ads. -
As stated above the problem is choice, it has been taken away. At install/update the sharing features are enabled, and your privacy is instantly compromised, a serious problem which is from that moment on completely irreversible as they admit there is no way to remove a username from the system, which in turn is a direct admission all data is kept. This would have been a non-issue if they had chosen an opt-in system, where the sharing is disabled by default, and left to the user to decide whether it should be turned on or not.
And if you believe the only issue is cost, then they should have set up a better payment/donation system that inspires a user to pay to start with. -
You can NOT turn the aggregation of your bookmarks of - you just dont need to use the new features - this is a big difference because still my private data is used for 3rd party purposes. -
@ARB: usernames are not recycled because they are used to create public content such as reviews. It would violate your privacy and identity rights if we allowed someone else to reuse your username and then post reviews or comments on our site. There would be no benefit to us as a venture-backed company with great hopes for longevity to lie about our data retention policies. Please see our Privacy FAQ for more info on opting out: http://blog.xmarks.com/?page_id=768 -
Sorry PennyC but you are missing the point completely along with the rest of the Foxmarks/Xmarks team.
You are doing something that is wrong and potentially unlawful - You are forgetting the consequences of presenting your software to the entire world; you have to deal with the laws of each individual country and any states therein.
In The Netherlands, which resides inside Europe; your opt-out model for data aggregation is illegal and even considering to employ such features without consulting the laws of that country is illegal. Posting a 'Privacy Policy' is not going to save you without legal backup!.
When a user of your service requests deletion of their account, you are obliged by law to delete -all- data related to that account immediately. -
And by the way, I am from the Netherlands. -
Inappropriate?@Albert: Hey I agree, no-one wants ads (I use Adblock Plus with Firefox myself... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...) Altho' I do admit I'll turn adblock OFF (allowing the ads) for a few sites I _really_ like... they need to make money to stay alive so it seems fair to me. But I'm a softy.
Anyhow, I think you'll find that the sync stuff is all the same. They built in some optional "discovery" stuff into the add-on, which you can indeed turn off (in the preferences under... "discovery"). THAT stuff hooks in to their (new I guess) website xmarks.com, which does look like it is gonna have ads at some point... at least the layout looks like that is the plan.
Hey so long as it's optional, it's ok with me if they want to feed their kids.
I’m feeding mine right now!
