Types of Information Collected
Hello!
After your update from Foxmarks to Xmarks, I read all kind of comments from users concerned about the privacy of their bookmarks, like this one: http://getsatisfaction.com/foxmarks/t....
I personaly do not care if you use my bookmarks in an anonym and aggregated way, but have concerns about the discovery features. In order for them to work, you have to transmit the following data to your site (correct me if I'm wrong):
a) Current site url (for the Site Information Feature)
b) Google search results
c) Location bar inputs (for the tag suggestion feature)
Especially c) is exactly the same type of information, Google is critized for collecting with Google Chrome (See for example http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-100...) isn't it?
I realize that all of these features can be turned off, but what concerns me is that none of these type of informations are mentioned in the "Types of Information Collected" section of your privacy policy (http://www.xmarks.com/about/privacy) nor in the privacy FAQ (http://blog.xmarks.com/?page_id=768).
How am I suppose to trust you, that you don't send these informations even if the features they are needed for are turned off, if you don't even bother to mention that you send these informations at all?
Kind Regards,
Steve

Inappropriate?Steve,
First off, thank you for your thoughtful question. You are correct in noting that our new discovery features do need to transmit browser data, like the current site url in order to provide "Similar Sites" results, and that each of these features can be easily turned off.
We state in our privacy policy that in conjunction with using our service "we may collect a variety of information from and about you in different ways." That said, I think you raise a good point and we will work to add more specific examples and clarity around the data collected and how it is used in the next iteration of the privacy policy.
Thanks,
James

Inappropriate?James,
thanks for your prompt reply - I'm looking forward to the next version of the privacy policy.

Inappropriate? The privacy policy is still unchanged.
So what you are basicaly saying is that "we may collect a variety of information from and about you in different ways." means that you collect whatever you want whenever you want.
This is unacceptable. Take a look at http://labs.mozilla.com/projects/weave/ for an alternative.
I’m frustrated
