Inappropriate?I'm not getting the Unknown Error 3 anymore, but it doesn't seem to ever Sync. It just keeps saying Synchronizing.

Inappropriate?Wow, the NS_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY is unusual, but suggests that your Firefox process is running out of memory to work with. This could happen because there are too many other programs running on your computer, or perhaps if you have very many bookmarks, and Foxmarks just can't load them all into memory.
It's also possible that your tag database in your Firefox profile has become corrupted, in which case a new Firefox profile would be the right solution:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/B... -
Inappropriate?Thanks Eric,
its certainly not a lack of RAM problem. This system has 16GB ;).
Creating the new profile worked. Now I just have to get everything reconfigured like I like in the new profile. :(
Just glad to have it working again, I really appreciate you taking the time to help! Have a great weekend!
Jason, a Happy FoxMarks user!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Great to hear it's working again! Now I'll just go sulk in envy of your 16GB of RAM. :)
-
Creating a new profile works...but then you have to go and re-install and reconfigure EVERY add-on you had previously. :(
If, like me, you use FF as your primary browser and have many plugins (like I do), then recreating a profile every time Xmarks throws a hissy-fit gets really old, really quickly!
Get your act together Xmarks - if you aren't going to open the source code to let people (like me) fix it, then at least release code that doesn't bork my browser! -
Inappropriate?I'm still getting this error. Can you take a look at my log? Apparently my "script stack space quota is exhausted"... Thanks.

Inappropriate?Izrun: A quick search on Google got me this:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop...
...which links to this Firefox 3 bug report:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug...
...the comment at the very bottom suggests that the behavior is now system-dependent--if you have a very large set of data (your bookmarks), and not enough resources available on your computer (mainly free memory in RAM), then it seems you'll get this error.
I think you can get this working again by either using a computer with more RAM, or else clearing out some old bookmarks to save the space.
If you can, some more information about your specific setup might help us come up with other solutions--your Foxmarks username, your operating system, and hardware profile would be a good start.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem.
I have a modest G5 Mac with 1GB Ram.
Syncing of Safari works flawlessly with the suppied software from Xmarks.
Syncing of Firefox (3.1b3) with the supplied extension does not. Interstestingly it appeared to work for a week or so & then started failing. I dont have a large book mark collection by any means.
I'd say a bug in FF3.1b3 maybe?

Inappropriate?I just upgraded to Xmarks 3.0.1 and now I'm getting this unknown error 3. Everything was working fine with the previous version of Foxmarks. I updated both Firefox and IE to Xmarks. I have a lot booksmarks, but this was never an issue with the previous version.
-
Inappropriate?Same here. Upgraded to Xmarks 3.0.1 and now getting this unknown error 3.
Everything was working fine with the previous version of Foxmarks.

Inappropriate?Getting same error on 4 different machines (Firefox). Appears to have started since upgrade to Xmarks 3.0.1. Any updates on this problem?
-
Inappropriate?I just upgraded to xmarks 3.0.1 from foxmarks two days ago. I am still using foxmarks on my workstation at the office. Now I am getting this annoying error message on my desktop at home. Any suggestions?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have to assume that they're working on a Xmarks update for the 3.0.1 Firefox version as in the last two days the IE version of Xmarks has been updated twice from 1.0.4 to 1.0.7 and today to 1.0.8. I have not tried to sync using the IE version as the master copy of my bookmarks is in my Firefox browser. So I will wait until the Firefox version is fixed before I sync. Hopefully soon.
-
Inappropriate?I also am having this problem. There is a solution ... Safari & MobileMe. Maybe that's what xMarks is trying to accomplish.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?"There is a solution ... Safari & MobileMe"
Yes, regrettably i switched to this solution also.
Totally transparent syncing between Cloud<-->iPhone<--> Mac(s)
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here. Been using Foxmarks for years, it wasn't until making the move to Xmarks (3.02) that this problem showed up. Same bookmark database. All advanced features (such as discovery, tag suggestion, etc) disabled. No system changes, running XP Pro SP3, 4GB RAM.
The only variable was "upgrading" to Xmarks. As they say, FAIL.
I’m irritated
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem but it appears to be a problem with an RSS URL:

Notice the "Exception in AcceptNodes: Error: Type mismatch for Apple Hot News(N0k1g3)place.type = 0 node.ntype = feed". This has only started happening since migrating from "Foxmarks" to "Xmarks" :(
I’m frustrated!
-
Forgot to mention, the URL for the RSS feed is:
feed://www.apple.com/main/rss/hotnews/hotnews.rss
Note the use of "feed:" in lieu of "http:" - this was originally synced from Safari. -
Surprise, surprise...the same error occurs on FF for OSX:
[2009-04-17 18:32:33] Exception in AcceptNodes: Error: Type mismatch for Mac OS X Downloads(S0k1g3)place.type = 0 node.ntype = feed
[2009-04-17 18:32:33] Returned error: Unknown error occurred (3).(3)
I even manually edited the bookmarks in Safari from "feed://..." to "http://..." synced from Safari to upload the changes - success. Then tried to sync from FF (both Windows and OSX) and they both choked with the same error.
Developers: FFS! How hard is it to un-f&*k this for Firefox?!? Surely a simple:
/* Following assumes the URL is contained in a C-style string array called "URL" */
if ( strncmp (URL,"feed",4) == 0 )
{
/* whatever to swap feed -> http */
}
would do the job for a browser that can't handle "feed://" URLs? -
I believe there was a problem with an earlier version of Foxmarks for Safari that didn't properly handle the "feed" URLs, but I think that's fixed in the most recent version available here: http://download.xmarks.com/download/s... -- you may need to perform an upload from Firefox to get things working properly again, though.
If not, please let us know! The interaction between the different browsers can be pretty quirky at times, but we're always working on ironing out the quirks we find. -
I recreated all my FF profiles and it started working again before you posted the comment above. I agree - getting different feature sets and implementations of "bookmarks" to play nice between browsers is tricky. I was just annoyed at the silence from X-marks. I'll see if the new Safari version has any effect (good or bad) on my now working FF browsers. -
Hrm - the plot thickens. I already had the 1.1.0 Safari plugin. So the version matrix and outcome was this:
Pre "X-marks" on Safari (OSX) and FF (Win32/OSX) = working
FF (Win/OSX) & X-marks 3.01 + Safari X-marks 1.1.0 = RSS "feed" URL error
FF (Win/OSX) & X-marks 3.02 + Safari X-marks 1.1.0 = RSS "feed" URL error
...force resync in FF (server over-writes host)...
FF (Win/OSX) & X-marks 3.02 + Safari X-marks 1.1.0 = RSS "feed" URL error
...rebuild profile for FF on all platforms...
FF (Win/OSX) & X-marks 3.02 + Safari X-marks 1.1.0 = OK
Seems there are some bugs yet to be squashed ;) -
Inappropriate?1st I exported my bookmarks... just in case, then via advanced settings I forced an overwrite of the server data using the Upload button. Now I can sync using the Main Synchronize button and I no longer get the Unknown Error 3. This was done using Xmarks 3.01 on Windows Vista using Firefox 3.08
jf... you mentioned Xmarks (3.02) where did you get that version? I can't find 3.02 for Firefox in the official Web site. -
Hi tamanaco,
My old Foxmarks auto-updated to 3.02. That's probably not much help to you... perhaps if you forced the update check from Firefox's addons screen it would come up? I don't know. I resisted moving to Xmarks at first, but when Firefox told me it was there, I figured I was going to be forcibly migrated soon anyway, so I took the plunge. But I did double-check, and it does show itself as v3.02. -
-
Strange... clicking on Add-Ons -> Find Updates does not prompt me to update to 3.02. I installed 3.02 using the link above and everything is working fine. I updated to Xmarks from Foxmarks via an email advertising the name change. The official Xmarks web site still only shows 3.01 -
Inappropriate? It seems to work ok on my Mac at home (using Xmarks - Safari combination) but cannot solve it on my work PC nor on my Firefox install on my home Mac. Not happy
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Based on the comment about 3.02, I tried again. The only change that I see is that the error message is different. Gone is the reference to error 3. Now it is just "An unknown synchronization error has occurred." My recommendation until they fix this problem is TURN OFF XMARKS.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Hi everyone
It seems that the only way to make this work is to delete any bookmarks that call an RSS feed. (un)Luckily, I had an RSS folder within my bookmarks and once I deleted this, the synchronization worked.
It's frustrating as it means that until Foxmarks sorts out this issue, I cannot bookmark any RSS feeds.
Foxmarks people: is there a solution being worked on?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It seems people are not bothering to read the thread.
Here's what we know :
- First reported 6 months ago involving Foxmarks 2.53 & Firefox 3.0.3 on a Vista X64 machine with 16Gb of RAM.
Suggested fixes by the company rep 6 months ago -
1) Blame the customer "too many other programs running on your computer"
2) Blame the customer "if you have very many bookmarks Foxmarks just can't load them all into memory"
[note : the user had 16Gb of RAM]
3) Blame Firefox "possible that your tag database in your Firefox profile has become corrupted"
[note : The user initially reported that creating a new profile fixed the problem but that the problem quickly recurred. I have personally reproduced the fault in a clean install of Firefox with NO extensions]
4) Blame Firefox "...which links to this Firefox 3 bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug/ ..."
[note : this bug was closed as fixed long ago]
- Other users on Win32 & MacOS X using newer versions of Foxmarks & Firefox have noted the same fault.
- Xmarks + Safari is unaffected on the same machines.
- James Gray has reported an apparent problem with handling of RSS URL's & a suggested fix to the Foxmark code.
[note : why did this alleged defect not show up in the past?]
- Tasmanaco reported a fix by using advanced settings to force an overwrite of the server data using the Upload button. Xmarks 3.01 on Windows Vista using Firefox 3.08
[note : i cannot confirm this, has anyone else had success with this?]
The only option at this time is to discontinue the use pf the Foxmarks/Xmarks extension for Firefox. This is a great shame as it was this extension that got this company its fame in the first place.
There has been a deafening silence from the company about this issue.
Hello? Anybody in the company listening?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It's now working. I deleted all the rss feeds and all the old imported bookmarks from IE that I no longer use and, suddenly, xmarks works!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?I apologize for the extended delay in responding to this topic; the error message that you're all dealing with can be caused by a variety of issues, and it's only by viewing your xmarks.log (or foxmarks.log, as the case may be) that you can determine the actual underlying cause.
James Gray is the only person who's provided an excerpt from his xmarks.log, so I commented on his reply above; anyone else who's still experiencing this problem, feel free to post a relevant excerpt from your xmarks.log and we'll do our best to help. -
Inappropriate?Eric, thanks for your reply.
If you take the time to read my detailed summary you will see myself & other people are having this error with the latest version of your software (v 3.01) and Firefox. Not Safari.
If as you say there are multiple causes of this error then i suggest your company label the software as 'Beta' and get busy to fix all the known problems.
I will not reinstall your software until i see bug fix versions released with notes describing what has been fixed.
Thanks
Chris
I’m sad
-
Thanks, ChrisG, but I'd said above that there's not much help I can offer without seeing a snippet from your xmarks.log.
I'm sorry if I erroneously implied the problem is only under Safari--it was just the feed-versus-http issue that's Safari-related (and only occurs when Xmarks for Firefox is in the mix anyway).
If you want to give the Xmarks extension a try again and have trouble using it, let us know some more specifics and we'll do our best to help. -
Inappropriate?Would the real Firefox extension please stand up?
Which version is the real one?
Guys you a are making a support nightmare for yourselves & your users!
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
or
http://download.xmarks.com/download/f...
Which version is the real one?
-
Both versions are essentially the same; we're still working out the right way to indicate that. The problem is that when downloading from the two different locations, the configuration of the update mechanism is slightly different, and so the signing of the .xpi makes it effectively a different extension from the perspective of Firefox.
Sorry for the confusion there; it's definitely something we're aware of and are working on ways to mitigate or eliminate it. -
Inappropriate?Eric,
My issue does not seem to have anything to do with RSS feed; there looks to be something about tags. This is with FF 3.0.10 & Xmarks 3.1.0 on a Windows XP maching with 4 GB RAM.

There's more, but it seems to repeat the above pattern.
thanks, Mike -
Inappropriate?I have the same error 3 problem, is there a fix? Using Firefox 30.10

Inappropriate?I'm really sorry for the delay in responding; I've been quite swamped lately.
Mike Morales and mrodini: The NS_ERROR_FILE_CORRUPTED error message in your xmarks.log means your bookmark store is corrupted; see http://getsatisfaction.com/foxmarks/t... for some tips on how to get that working again if you still have that problem.

this answers the question

Inappropriate?Thanks!!
I do this:
1. Shut down Firefox
2. Use your OS's find feature to find a file called "places.sqlite".
3. Rename that file to "places.sqlite.broken" (or any other file name of your choosing).
4. Restart Firefox
5. Download your bookmarks from the Foxmarks server: Tools -> Foxmarks -> Advanced -> Download Now.
I’m excited
-
You're quite welcome! Great to hear it's working again for you.
