seems quite complicated

I really like XMarks... but I'm plagued with error 3. I upgraded to Firefox 3.5 and thought it was cured, but much to my dismay, it reappeared tonight on my laptop. The only cure I've found is to delete my profile and let Firefox rebuild a new one. However, each time it erases all my add-ons and they need to be re-installed. This fix only lasts for few days then it's error 3 again. I mainly use 2 computers and both have the same problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I've followed the instructions above and recreated 3 new accounts trying to solve this problem and I'm still getting hit with Error 3 problems.

What's causing the issue and is there any other method to fixing it? I really don't want to start looking around for alternative bookmark solutions.

Now it works again after months of non synchronization. I guess the latest version has solved the issue!

I am getting the same Synchronization error(3) here nis a copy of my log file, can anyone help? I have tried the forced download.

I've got the same issue and it covers four different computers. I'm not going to do the profile thing on four computers when this seems to be a more than commone error.

Im getting this error as well since 2 days on 3 computers all with Firefox 3.5.2 and Xmarks 3.3.2

1 Mac, 2 Windows machines.

The Mac with Safari works fine, but FF on the same Mac is getting this problem. The 2 Windows machines have FF 3.5.2 as well and they do not synch and give me this error.

I started to get this error when one of my computers had Firefox 3.5 installed and two of my other computers had Firefox 3.0 installed.
I upgraded all my computers to Firefox 3.5 and made new profiles for them all and it has been trouble free.

I have the same problem on Mac OS X with FF3.5.2 and Xmarks 3.3.2

The only way to resolve this was:

In Windows - Create NEW profiles for all FF
In Mac - For some reason you can't create new profiles so I had to DELETE the old profile I had (since 2006 thank you very much) and start a new one

Now everything works

But, of course, I upgraded to MacOS 10.6 and there is still no Xmarks support for Safari yet so I have to use FF instead until you do.

Nice going Xmarks, managed to currupt 4 FF installations at once.

PS Yes I realize this is free service, but this was a big show stopper in case you ever want me to start paying (or even recommend this service to others)

I tried everything and can confirm what says zo : the only way to resolve this is to create new profiles for FF on all your computers ...

You can do this on mac by opening the terminal and typing this command :

/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -ProfileManager

I tried that in 10.6 with FF 3.5.2 but that command doesn't work anymore so I had to do it manually. Terminal said something about a library being out of date...

I'm getting the same with both vista and XP

I had the exact same error message until I un-installed another add-in I had called "bookmark duplicate detector" no more problems, hope this helps.

Pretty surprised that this still hasn't been fixed after a year of constant problems for the community. Speaks badly of XMarks.

I just gave up and stopped xmarks from syncing anything. Not in the mood to put a whole new profile on all of my computers and deal with all the other settings. Maybe someday it will be fixed

Very pissed off as I liked XMarks, but the same I've given up. I'll wait until someone sends an email sending they have fixed it, until it lays dormant.

Looking for another company that does the same but cares about sorting out problems.

Here is what I found to be the best work around. I you have on computer that does not get the error, you can make new profiles on the computers that are getting the errors and then copy the data form your good profile to the new profiles. This keeps you from having to set up all the new profiles. I did this and it worked like a charm. It took me all of 5 minutes to do it.
Keep in mind this is a free plug-in and no one is forcing you to use it, so lets have a little less whining and more good ides for us that want to keep using it!

What solution is that? If a person is fortunate enough to own a computer without the glitch? There is no "plug in" at Jeff's response only a link to rentals at Puerto Vallarta. Mr Rogers, I will gladly come to you with my four computers all with the bad xmark issue and let you see if there is anything you can use to help with a fix. While I certainly have appreciated the whole xmark application, this again proves that nothing is perfect in the computer world.

As far as I can see it is when you have some computers using Firefox 3 and others using Firefox 3.5. That is where I have run into problems.

I don't even know what a Profile is much less how to change it and wouldn't want to delete one without knowing what it is or what I'm supposed to change it to. Forget about copying a profile from one computer to another - how??? And I DEFINITELY don't know what it means to "open the mac terminal" and would not risk this with my level of knowledge. Guess I'll check out Weave also.

In some people's log, and also in mine, it appears there is an incompatibility between x marks and certain other plugins, like Fast Dial. I've seen the problem 4 times now. Can x marks people install other add ons in their firefox? That would help I guess. Until then, I don't use it, even if I like it.

obviously the people who have responded here are frustrated, and think about those that don't even know this forum exits. Whoever created xmarks/foxmarks should be smart enough to fix this problem uniformly. Yes, it's free and yes one shouldn't expect help that involves simple fixes, but this seems major. Wish I could still use it, but it just does not work and trying to use it just bogs down firefox.

I am using both Fast Dial and x marks as well as other plug-ins with no problems.

I've used xmarks for several years without any problems before this morning. The problem seems to be with the xmarks for ie module. I had previously installed it and then merged my files together. I had then uploaded from there to put that set of bookmarks on the server. I noticed that everytime that IE syncs that it creates another unsorted bookmarks folder that is empty. After that I would get the unknown error occurred(3) message when I tried to sync FireFox. I tried all of the above and it did not help on a permanent basis. I finally uninstalled xmarks for ie from my Vista machine that had the problem, but still had the problem. I then uploaded a good set of book marks from another machine (my "places.sqlite.*" files had already been deleted). This cleared up the sync issue but my book marks still were not right so I restored from my last sync file from yesterday and that solved it. I hope this helps anyone else experiencing this issue as well as the developer in creating a permanent fix for an excellent application.

I was getting the error in firefox 3.5.5 on Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6. Moving all bookmarks out of a folder called "Unsorted Bookmarks" and then doing an upload to overwrite the server has fixed the problem for me.

I was finally able to solve this!

My work computer has been fine, but my home computer kept popping up a message that said that a new sync file had been uploaded and asked me what I wanted to do (merge, cancel or download). Nothing that I would do could get xmarks to cooperate. When I opened the xmarks settings, I kept seeing that sync failed (error 3)

I tried:
- merge
-download
-force download from the app
-uninstall and reinstall xmarks
-uninstall xmarks, uninstall firefox and reinstall both
-backup bookmarks and restore in firefox
-looked for 'places' files but couldn't find them

Finally, I did this:

SOLUTION (for me)
1) made sure that my bookmarks were on the xmarks server by going to tools>xmarks>my xmarks in firefox
2) went to bookmarks>organize bookmarks and manually deleted all my bookmarks
3) went to tools>xmarks>xmarks settings and went to the advanced tab
4) selected the 'download' button next to 'force overwrite of local data'

Success!
