Why are Bookmarks duplicated repeatedly on several machines and the web?

I have four computers. since converting to Xmarks I now have 4 copies of all of my bookmarks. What a mess. I cleaned up and sync'd three of the computers and when I turned on the fourth, magically all of the duplicates are back on the website and on all of my machines. So much for a rare error. What is the solution ?
