Why Random duplications? I'm not smart enough to claim it's not my fault.
Ok, This is the first time I've tried to figure out what's going on. I've looked through the conversations on the duplication problem and I don't know what I may have done wrong.
I've noticed random duplicates a couple of times lately. I'm not sure how long it's been going on. I started using Foxmarks this past fall. Before that I had a different product which has been discontinued.
It's possible that the duplication problem has been there for a while, but I only started noticing it this past couple of weeks. I think it started when I installed the IE Beta. At least I hadn't noticed it before that.
I have three computers. A laptop, a desktop that only I use (for school and website design) and a desktop that is used by the whole family. Since I had the other synchronization add-on before, all three of these already had my bookmarks before I installed Foxmarks.
The duplication problem is inconsistent. Sometimes it duplicates individual bookmarks within the same folder. Sometimes I find them outside the folder. Other times whole folders get duplicated. I tried simply fixing the problem on my main computer and letting foxmarks sync in the hope it would take care of things, but I soon had the duplicates back. I tried a forced upload to the server, but I still got duplicates.
Tonight, I logged onto the server and cleaned up everything there. If this doesn't resolve the issue, what else can I do? Am I going to have to delete all the bookmarks from all my computers and do a restore from the server? If I can't determine the cause of the problem, I don't think that will be a permanent answer either.

Inappropriate?Depending on how you synchronize other computers afterward, an upload can actually contribute to the duplicates problem. After an upload, the other computers have to determine "by hand" whether any given bookmark or folder is the same as what's currently on the server, and sometimes changes between versions can be interpreted as the bookmark or folder being a completely new entity, and thus needing retention on both sides, resulting in a duplicate.
That said, if you're using the IE beta and seeing duplicates, it's conceivable that the beta is at fault--as it says on the beta download page, your bookmarks can experience problems during beta testing, so it's always a good idea to have backups.
We'd love to investigate duplication issues further, but it's very difficult to do so without a solid example of how to replicate the behavior. If you figure out any set of actions that reliably results in duplicates, definitely let us know, as it would help very much in remedying the issue.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I think Foxmarks for Firefox has been working fine. Added the IE beta recently, and now I notice what look like random bookmark duplications, and files with missing bookmarks, or even emptying altogether. I'm syncing a desktop (XP), laptop (Vista), and a mobile phone (Windows Mobile 6.1), Foxmarks and IE on both PC's. I've tried fixing each pc individually, or going to your website and fixing things there. No matter how careful I am, the errors continue. I can't replicate a specific result, and I can't figure out where the problem is.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Same here. All problem appear after I try to merge and sync IE favourite with Firefox as a single set of bookmark.
Now I have to turn off IE Synchronizer to see if this help.

Inappropriate?I went to the website, fixed everything the way I needed it, then force downloaded it to my computer. The duplications seem to have stopped, but when I open IE (rarely), I am getting a sync error. It seems like maybe the IE sync has stopped working, so that may be why the duplications stopped.
I’m unsure

Can you send your Foxmarks log file (for IE) to betatest@foxmarks.com? I'd love to see what error you're seeing. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the heads up guys. I haven't been able to reproduce this yet, but I'm still trying. Do you guys ever do any Foxmarks uploads and downloads in IE, or do you only use the Synchronization button?

I too am having a serious duplication issue. I run a small home network with 6 computers all running xMarks. I recently deleted all the duplication and was careful to force a local overwrite of the master list from the server on each machine. All seemed well. But now the apprently random duplication has re-occured. It is very strangew because folders are duplicated within other totally unrelated folders. Can you help? I'm happy to give you access to my account should you wish to see for yourself -
What browsers are you using Xmarks with? Also, if you do hit serious duplication issues you can revert our (accidental) changes by using backup and restore to get back to a clean version: http://wiki.foxmarks.com/wiki/Product... -
Inappropriate?I tried to download to IE after the duplication appear (in order to remove the duplicate in my IE)
But the problem still occur some tie later.

Inappropriate?I've slept since doing the install. I don't actually recall whether or not I did a download at that time. I would have expected it to happen automatically at that point though. As I said previously, I rarely use IE, so all activity there since that time has been automatic. I don't use the sync button either though. I have it set up to sync on open and close.

Inappropriate? Here's the latest update....I have been working with Colin at the support center...He wanted me to send him a copy of the error I'd been getting whenever I opened IE. The log was too large to open, so I cleared it, then opened IE and told it to sync. After I had done that, I checked my favorites in IE and found duplications again. I was afraid this would be carried to the server, so I went to my foxmarks account and found it to be OK. To make sure it didn't get messed up again, I deleted all the bookmarks from my IE browser, then did a forced download.
I now have correct bookmarks in both IE and Foxfire and the error I was getting whenever I opened IE has stopped. Of course, it will take a few days for me to feel like the problem is really fixed.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?OOPs....make that firefox not foxfire. It's bad whey dyslexia extends to whole syllables.
I’m silly

Inappropriate? Thanks for the update! I, too, am not convinced that Foxmarks for IE is working 100% correctly yet, but I'm glad to hear that things seem to be okay for you right now. Let us know if you run into any other problems.
