Xmarks installation terminated after the uninstall failed
I'm currently running Foxmarks 0.9.85 on a Vista machine. A message prompted me to install Foxmarks v1.0.11. The installation terminated when the auto uninstall failed. The error message directed me to contact support. Can you suggest next steps to fix this problem?

Inappropriate?Hey JDickerson,
Can you uninstall 0.9.85 from the Windows Control Panel->Add Remove programs? After that is removed, install the latest version here:
http://download.xmarks.com/download/ie
Let me know how that goes!
Thanks -
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the program wasn’t listed in the uninstall section. I did find it in the program folder but the uninstall failed. The error message says, “Windows installer The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel”. -
Inappropriate?Hey JDickerson,
Thanks for the update. What happens if you install the latest version on top of the old version? -
I launched the set up file downloaded from the link you suggested. Installation began, I was asked to grant permission to run 808ca7.msi then after a few seconds a message said The older version of xmarks for IE cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. The installation terminates. -
Inappropriate?Sorry about that! Sounds like the installation got messed up somewhere along the way. I did a little digging around and it looks like you might be able to clean up the old installation by using this utility: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/08/...
It's annoying that you have to do that to get everything cleaned up, but I think it might be your best option right now. Afterward you should be able to install the new version without any problems (and uninstall it too, if you ever want to!).
Let me know if this doesn't do the trick,
Colin -
Thanks for the utility Colin. Unfortunately, there was no listing for the Foxmarks/xmarks installation so I could not do a clean up. The utility did list all of my other installations so I assume it works. -
Ugh, that's a bummer. After searching around more, some users have had success running CCleaner to remove unused data from uninstalls that have gone wrong. I don't know if this will work because I've never used it before, but it could be worth a shot. Of course, anything that messes with your registry data could potential cause problems, so it would be safest if you backed up your registry data first. -
Inappropriate?Colin,
A few months ago, we discussed the problem I had trying to upgrade Foxmarks/xmarks. I tried CCleaner but neither Foxmarks nor Xmarks is listed. Since we last spoke, I upgraded to Windows 7. So now, Foxmarks 0.9.85 is running on a Windows 7 machine. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem. I can't install the latest version without uninstalling the previous one. I was hoping the upgrade to Win 7 would make the issue go away. Foxmarks still works but I figure I should resolve the problem anyway. What can I try as a next step?

What version of the installer is it looking for, again? (And what file are you pointing it to?) Are you still seeing the exact same error as you were seeing before?
I launched the set up file downloaded from the link you suggested. Installation began, I was asked to grant permission to run 808ca7.msi then after a few seconds a message said The older version of xmarks for IE cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. The installation terminates.

Inappropriate?Colin, I'm launching the update from 0.9.85. When I check for updates via 0.9.85 it says a newer version of Foxmarks v1.0.11 is available. The install prompts me to run or save the Xmarks file. When it is runs the file copies, it asks me if I want to run xmarksinstaller-for-ie1.0.11.msi. After the installation begins it installs to C:\Program Files\Xmarks\IE Extension\ 72D386.msi. Right after I click allow a message appears saying, “The older version of Xmarks for IE cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. After that another message says, “Xmarks for i.e. setup wizard ended prematurely because of an error”. It suggests I run the setup wizard again. So, basically, nothing has changed. I get the same message. Do you think reinstalling .9.8 would work? If so I’d need a copy. J

Inappropriate?Yeah, lets try running the 0.9.85 installer again. You can download it from here: https://static.xmarks.com/clients/ie/...

Inappropriate?Colin, I got an error message saying the configuration data for this product is corrupt. So much for my idea. :( There must be some way to fix this issue. Too bad it isn't on my XP machine. I'll be wiping it clean to install Win 7.
-
Inappropriate?Well I've also got a new version of Xmarks available. I doubt it's going to fix things, but the installer is a little different so there's a chance. You can try it out here: https://static.xmarks.com/clients/ie/...

Colin i got the same results. Will 0.9.85 continue working with newer versions? If so, I guess I'll have to live with this until I get stuck. J -
Man, that's really annoying, I'm sorry. :( But yeah, 0.9.85 should continue to work just fine. I'll keep thinking about this in the back of my head and see if I can come up with any other ideas.
