Xmarks installation will not complete.
I have Firefox 3.0.8 and tried to add Xmarks. It downloaded and installed without issue. Firefox restarted to complete installation, but there is no menu item for Xmarks. When I looked in Tools | Add-ons, I saw the following message:
This add-on will be installed when Firefox is restarted.
Firefox has been restarted multiple times but Xmarks still has not completed installation. What do I need to do?

Inappropriate?I know in older versions of Firefox you could do the following if you got a dialog box confirming installation but the extension wasn't listed after choosing to install.
1. Exit Firefox.
2. Go to the Firefox profile folder and look inside the "extensions" folder. If you find a staged-xpis subfolder, delete it.
Note: This link will tell you how to find the profile folder - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_fol...
3. Reopen Firefox and try installing extension again.
Not sure if this works the same in 3.x versions, but you can have a look. Hope this helps. -
Inappropriate? The solution above did not work for me. Has it worked for anybody else running Firefox 3.0.8 ?
P.S. I am running Firefox 3.0.8 -
Inappropriate? This is a symptom of a somewhat common Firefox profile corruption, and FreddyP was on the right track. Try this (slightly different) procedure:
1. Exit Firefox.
2. Go to the Firefox profile folder.
3. Delete the following files: extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini.
4. Reopen Firefox. If Xmarks isn't already installed, try installing it again.
Note that this process will have the side-effect of enabling all extensions that you have installed, so you'll have to disable again any extensions that you might have disabled previously.

I had this issue and ended up useing task manager to remove the rundlls then re start Firefox that seemed to sort it -
Inappropriate?Unfortunately Todd & FreddyP your solutions have not worked.
I have been able to install Xmarks on my other 2 computers (running Vista & XP) on both IE & Firefox.
I have also installed Xmarks on IE that's on the same computer I'm having trouble installing Xmarks on Firefox.
I have uninstalled Firefox & removed all references to Firefox from the C drive (on this Vista notebook) then reinstalled Firefox. After installing Xmarks & being asked to restart, no install has occurred & there is no mention of Xmarks in the Extensions dialog box.
All very frustrating, but at least I'm not asked to restart Firefox to complete installation anymore!!!

I am having the same problem as this if there is a resolution I would appreciate knowing it. -
Inappropriate? My work around, import favorites from IE :(
Not a very satisfactory solution though! -
Inappropriate? The solution given by Todd worked for me second time. The thing is first time I had Firefox still running while deleting those files. The process is as following, just remember to close firefox before you delete.
Cheers.

Inappropriate?Couple days ago I have realized, that bookmarks are not synchronising. I couldn't synch them manualy, because xmarks icon has disappeared from browser's statusbar. So I tried reinstall both xmarks and firefox but without success (deleted profiles and everything). Same behavior as mentioed above. My second computer works still well and xmarks and FF have no problem.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Hey JeanLuc,
Sorry for the delayed response! Are you still having problems installing Xmarks? Is Xmarks listed in Tools-> Add-ons ?
Hopefully we can get this solved for you soon!
Thanks -
Nothing helped so I have reinstalled Windows (clean installation) and instaled FF and ad-ons again. Everything works well since then. -
Inappropriate? My problem resolved itself, possibly due to an updated firefox a while ago now. Sorry I cant be of more assistance!

Inappropriate?Hey Alan,
Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused! Which directions have you tried? -
I have the same problem and tried the following in this order:
1) Deleting Firefox profiles
2) Removing and deleting everything I could obviously find related to XMarks (but not looking in the registry!)
3) Uninstalling Firefox, removing obvious traces of XMarks and then reinstalling Firefox and XMarks.
I still have no XMarks in my Tools menu - the install goes normally, until I get the "Restart Firefox to finish" - Firefox restarts correctly, but no XMarks (am running updated Firefox, on Vista SP2 with all updates). -
Inappropriate?I too cannot install Xmarks.
- Tried Deleting Profiles
- Uninstalling (and deleting profiles)
- Re-Installing (Firefox 3.0.11 & Firefox 3.5 RC)
I have not other problems with any other add-ons.
I’m very frustrated

Inappropriate?toddb and catandmouse: Have you tried any of the solutions mentioned at the Mozilla support site?
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/U...
Sometimes software running on your computer might be blocking an add-on from being installed properly.
We've never had any luck replicating problems like this on our own computers, so if you have any tips on how to replicate, or have a computer that's easily carried to a coffee shop in San Francisco, California for us to take a gander at, please let us know! We'd love to find a solid fix for this, but without being able to determine the underlying cause, a fix can be hard to come by. -
Inappropriate?Hey everyone,
I'm not sure if you're still watching this thread, but I posted a solution in this thread that has worked for everyone posting in it. Let me know if it works for you. Thanks!

Inappropriate?OK, I think I finally found the root of this problem. I believe it has to do with the Microsoft .NET extension. Even if it is pure coincidence that after removing the .NET extension Xmarks installed properly you should remove this extension because it is a security issue.
I was reading an article at Networkworld http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009... about how Microsoft snuk the extension with a Windows update. The following is an excerpt from that article:
"An add-on that Microsoft silently slipped into Mozilla's Firefox last February leaves that browser open to attack, Microsoft's security engineers acknowledged earlier this week.
One of the 13 security bulletins Microsoft released Tuesday affects not only Internet Explorer (IE), but also Firefox, thanks to a Microsoft-made plug-in pushed to Firefox users eight months ago in an update delivered via Windows Update."
I have now deleted this extension after reading the article and Xmarks works great. I did not have to do any manual installing or changing of any settings. It makes sense because the purpose of the .NET extension is to allow for automatic installing of applications. The extension was probably altering the way that Firefox installs addons. -
Inappropriate? So, Snobird, sorry for the lame, decidedly-non-techie question, but how did/do you delete the .NET extensions from wherever it is that they are supposed to be deleted from?
Thanks in advance.
Oh, XP OS and FF 3.5.5, with the same problem of downloading and installing Xmarks, but not having it showing as an add-on extension. -
This reply was removed on 12/07/09.

Inappropriate?I switched over to Mozilla Weave for bookmark sync. It's not cross browser, but does a better job and syncs more than Xmarks (I was NEVER able to get Xmarks to install)

I’m happy

Did you try the link Nate had above? It appears to bypass the firefox installer part and lets you put xmarks directly into the extensions. Worked like a charm for me. -

Inappropriate? Thanks for the tip. I did end up getting it to work and it sounds like we both found solutions so it's all good.
