Xmarks went away
I went to sync Xmarks then realized it wasn't in my Notifications toolbar. It wasn't under Tools > Xmarks either. It wasn't even on my installed programs list.
I tried to reinstall Xmarks, both from the Firefox add-ons and from My.Xmarks website (two different-looking filenames), but neither one did anything after the required Firefox restart.
Is this due to some recent upgrade, of Firefox, or Microsoft, or my Webroot antivirus? Could be anything!
So how can I get Xmarks back on this computer?

Hey Family,
Ok, let's see if this works. I just tried it in a fresh profile, and it worked fine, so hopefully it'll work for you!
Steps:
1. Nav to download.xmarks.com/download/firefox and right click the install button, and select "save image as" and save it to your hard drive.
2. Right click the file you just downloaded and rename it to ***.zip instead of ****.xpi. This will allow you to be able to unzip the contents.
3. Extract the contents to a different folder.
4. Go to the path you visited before:
"Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions\ "
5. Create a folder in the extensions folder named: foxmarks@kei.com
6. Copy ALL the contents of the extracted folder to the foxmarks@kei.com folder.
7. Open Firefox, and Xmarks should be installed.
Let me know how it goes!
Thanks,
Nate

Inappropriate?Hey Family,
The behavior you're describing sounds like you've got a corrupted Firefox profile. We've been seeing this occurring after upgrading Firefox. You can create a new one by following these directions:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/M...
Thanks -
Nate: Thanks for your reply, but still no fix. I created a new profile (which, of course, opens with none of my preferences or bookmarks), but I still couldn't get Xmarks to install. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox 3.5.2 (which thankfully saved my preferences and bookmarks), and I tried allowing various levels of cookies, but STILL the same issue: Message says to restart Firefox to complete installation of Xmarks, but nothing changes.
Can you suggest anything else to try? -
Inappropriate?Hey Family,
Do you have administrative rights on the computer you are installing Xmarks on? Do you have strict antivirus programs/firewalls/proxies? These may be factors as well. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks -
Inappropriate?Well, I don't know enough to answer all your questions. Yes, I have administrator rights. I tried more stuff, but no success, such as: For Webroot antivirus, I went to "gamer mode" to lower all but the executables (?) shield, for Windows Defender, I temporarily turned off the services shield. I even went so far as to finally install SP2 for Vista. I tried some things after reading others' similar posts here: I installed another Firefox add-on, and I first disabled and then removed the Microsoft .NET Framework "Helper for Firefox" extension that gets snuck in when .NET is updated. Rebooting and creating a new Firefox profile didn't work.
What now? I miss my Xmarks!
Thanks.
I’m dysfunctional

Inappropriate? My problem is still unresolved. Tried many suggestions I've read here, and I've more recently posted in reply to Warren's "Cannot install. Cannot sync."
I'm running FF 3.5.2 on Vista 32-bit, and I've gotten the same result (that is, no Xmarks) whether trying to install Xmarks 3.3.2 or 3.3.3.
Some update apparently caused my Xmarks to just go away, and I haven't been able to reinstall it. I click to install Xmarks, but after I follow instructions to restart FF to complete the Xmarks installation, Xmarks is just not there. Xmarks is a very useful program! I want it back.
I’m in need of customer support.

Inappropriate?Mozilla provides some details on how to work around some common problems with installing:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/U...
...but I'm not sure any of those are necessarily relevant here. Unfortunately, investigating the problem further requires some more advanced sleuthing, but if you're up for it, some things to check include:
- If you navigate to the location of your Firefox profile folder, do you find a Foxmarks or Xmarks folder in your extensions folder therein?
- If not, do you have permission to write to that folder? i.e., can you create another folder in that folder?
- Can you install other add-ons in Firefox successfully? It's possible you have anti-virus software that's blocking all Firefox extension installation.
Let us know if any of the above yields new information. We'd love to find a good solution to this problem--as you noted, it's very frustrating to encounter, and doesn't seem to have an obvious resolution for it. -
Inappropriate?Eric, thanks for taking this on.
To answer your questions:
1. I went to Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions\ and found the folder empty.
2. Yes, I do have permission to write to the folder. (Created and deleted a temp folder as a test.)
3. Yes, I can (and did) install other FF add-ons.
Today:
1. I temporarily turned off Windows Defender malware protection.
2. With FF closed, I deleted 3 extensions.* files (.cache and 2 others), again, just in case, since elsewhere FF suggests doing so if a program won't install.
3. I successfully installed another FF add-on, UnsortedBookmarks, and now a folder for that add-on appears in my FF extensions folder.
....Got the same result as usual: I follow instructions to "restart FF to install" after downloading Xmarks, but then Xmarks isn't installed.
Let me know what to try, look at, report, whatever!
I’m still hopeful

I have got the same problem. and the answers were nearly the same, except there is no xmarks folder in my profile dir. -
Inappropriate?Adrian, your problem IS the same as mine. There's no Xmarks folder in my Firefox extensions folder either. The folder that's there is for a DIFFERENT add-on that I tried, to ensure that I am able to install OTHER Firefox add-ons.
Since last posting, I've tried uninstalling Google Gears (something one post ID'd as a possible conflict) but that didn't help either.
I sure would love to hear back from the Support folks here, to try anything else that might work!!
I’m still hoping help is on the way?

Great job. Works for me. -
This works fine ! Thanks. -
Yay, Nate! This worked for me too. (Note, you need to "Save Target As" rather than "Save Image As.") THANK YOU! -
I did what you said but hit a little snag. I am not able to see the extensions folder within my firefox profile. I made sure there were no hidden folders or files. -
Worked fine for me XP Pro. The files chrome.manifest and install.rdf in foxmarks@kei.com folder are not being replaced by the normal install and restart procedure but copy files manually does the trick -
This worked for me too. See the posts in a different thread in the same problem, called "Xmarks will not install, no errors" -
Endlich kann ich meine Lesezeichen wieder auf dem Notebook synchronisieren. Aber warum dieses Problem auftritt (immer nach der Installation von XM für Internet Explorer) ist damit immer noch nicht geklärt. -

Inappropriate?Yes!!! I'm glad this worked for you guys!! Jason, what OS are you running? I'd try creating a folder /extensions in your profile folder, or creating a new profile.
Thanks for your patience!
Nate -
I'm running Windows 7. I haven't had any issues with my other Win7 machines. I just gave everything a shot. I created the folder and then when that did not work I created a whole new profile. -
Inappropriate?Hey Jason,
That is definitely strange. Did the new profile have an /extensions folder there? It seems like Firefox isn't installing properly on this machine, there should be a /extensions folder in a fresh profile. You might of tried this already, but can you reinstall Firefox? In the meantime, i'll search around for installation issues with Windows 7.
Thanks,
Nate -
Yup!! I have removed any antivirus software and removed firefox a few times. So the weird thing is I went and looked at one of the working machines and the extensions folder is not there either. I found it in a different location but it only contained a folder where it's name is a bunch of letters and numbers. It's weird. Can you give me a full path as to where the folder should be in Win7 from the root. Thanks -
Inappropriate?Hey Jason,
I've been looking everywhere for information on Windows 7, and I haven't really found anything worth while yet. Unfortunately I don't have access to Windows 7 yet, but hopefully soon. The folder path should be the same as Vista : %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions -
I got it working... I was placing the foxmarks@kei.com folder in the wrong place I guess, but its installed! I see if I can do some more testing as to why it wouldn't install normally -
The layout in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit is different as follows:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxx.default\
has only cache subdirectory and a few local files
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Extensions\{yyyyyyyyyy}
directory is empty
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxx.default\extensions\{yyyyyyyyyyyy}\plugins\
only contains a single file
There are a few plug-ins and extensions that Firefox 3.5.5 reports as installed and working. Suggestions? -
Inappropriate?Hey Jason,
Great news!! I'm glad you're up and running! I'll let you know if I find any more clues, but I'm thinking that it's a permissions issue, that software doesn't have permission to write to the folder for some reason. Anyway, let me know if you find something!
Thanks!

Inappropriate?Nate, Xmarks is still not working for me.
First, I did a search of my entire hard drive and did not find "Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions\ ". I did not even find a "Firefox\Profiles" folder. I did a reinstall of FireFox a couple of days ago. Should I do another reinstall?
BTW, Xmarks did appear in the Tools Menu drop-down menu and in the Add-ons list.
Second, I am confused by the first step in your instructions. When I go to "download.xmarks.com/download/firefox", there is no Install button, only the Download button. After I click on it and click Allow, a small window appears with an Install Now button, but nothing happens when I right click on it.
I am running Windows SP3 and FireFox 3.5.2.
I have completely uninstalled Xmarks as of now, until I can get a fix that will work for me. -
Hi Wilcc
In Windows XP you need to first open folder Documents and Settings - then your user folder - then Application Data - then Mozilla - then Firefox - then Profiles - check the dates of the default profiles then open the most recently dated folder - then open Extensions - there should be the foxmarks@kei.com folder -
Inappropriate?Vista? Try running Firefox as administrator. Although it might not do anything, it might also work.
I’m hoping it'll work
-
Inappropriate? In my case the problem was an theme of chrone...
I changed theme and reinstall and it works perfect....
hope this help some users
I’m happy
