Xmarks. Will it work with 3.5?
I downloaded the latest version of Firefox (3.5) today but now I can't seem to get Xmarks to work with it? Several other add-ons are also not working. Will Xmarks be compatible with Firefox 3.5 any time soon?

I just noticed we never "officially" responded--the official response is that, yes, Xmarks should work in Firefox 3.5. We're keeping an eye out for anything definitely related to the switch to 3.5, but so far it mostly seems to be issues that were endemic to earlier releases as well.

Inappropriate? Most extension developers are hassled by Mozilla for some time before release to get their extensions ready for the new update. However, some lag behind or have abandoned their extensions. The best thing you can do is find the homepage of the extensions which don't have updates, and see if the author has posted any information. If not, you may want to contact the authors and let them know that you'd like to see a version which works with Firefox 3.5.
Since xmarks actually uses getsatisfaction (I visited their site and went to the support forum, and it's here!) I'll move your thread over to the right forum.

Inappropriate?I've got three different computers spanning two operating systems and all of them exhibit the same failure with Xmarks since updating to FF3.5.
-
Inappropriate?Hey Andy,
What failure are you experiencing? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks -
Progress bar does the blue/white stripey thing and doesn't complete. After a while it says unknown error (number is 3). During the attempted sync, there are a handful of dialog boxes for keeping the server/local version. -
Inappropriate?Hey Andy,
I'd suggest creating a new Firefox profile and re-installing Xmarks. Directions for that are here:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/M...
Thanks -
With respect, one profile going wrong I can understand, but all three? On XP and Leopard? It's unlikely that this is the problem.
What are the alternatives please? -
The old "it must be your profile" answer is wearing thin. It ranks right up there with "reinstalling Windows." As Andy said, it's unlikely that 3 profiles got corrupt. -
Actually, Biscuit, if usage is similar across three machines (and it often is), profile corruption in multiple places is a possibility, and if a new profile fixes things, that helps us narrow down the likely causes. We try to view it less as the panacea you suggest we're framing it as than as another step toward a possible permanent fix.
We do appreciate your efforts to keep us honest, though! -
Inappropriate?Andy: Can you post a snippet from the end of your xmarks.log that includes the error message? Instructions here:

Andy: Generally that problem can happen if you're also syncing with a Safari browser; let us know if that's not the case, as we're still tracking down that elusive bug.
I think an upload from the affected browser should fix things: Tools > Xmarks > Settings: Advanced: Upload. Let us know if that doesn't get things working again. -
Brilliant - I'd forgotten about Safari (which appears to have been syncing fine). I forced a server overwrite from one of my FF instances and the other ones are now working again.
Many thanks Eric. -
Inappropriate?I've had no luck with Firefox 3.5 either. New profile does NOT work (either download or merge setting). Tried on 3 operating systems, 6 systems (which is why I'm interested in sync software in the first place). Firefox 3.0 continues to sync without issue. The exception in AcceptNodes error did look familiar so here's an excerpt from my last sync with firefox 3.5 in case it might help. If it's a separate issue apologies.

Lourdes J: That's an odd one, never seen that before. Do you mind sharing your username so we can look at the server-side errors as well in the hopes of finding the underlying cause? -
Eric: Apparently it's something specific to my bookmarks then but no luck. Username dirkling.
Firefox 3.0.12 syncs fine on Vista, XP and linux. Internet Explorer 8 syncs fine on Vista and XP. Firefox 3.5.1 is not syncing (new profiles, no other addons) Vista, XP and linux. -
I have this issue too, Firefox 3.5.3. Have had an account for a while -- r4ubix is my login.

Inappropriate? In case it's lost in the comments, Eric's suggestion of forcing a server overwrite from one of the affected browsers fixed the problem.
-
Inappropriate?YES ist working now!
on XP SP3 with Firefox 3.5.1 and XMark 3.1.1 on my PC
without trouble since 4 days now
-
Inappropriate?I've experienced the same problem but only on my instance of Firefox on my Vista machine. On my XP machine Xmarks is working fine in Firefox 3.5. However, these are the two machines I need to synchronize! No matter how many times I try I can't get XMarks to install on Firefox on the Vista machine. It appears to install successfully but on re-start it's simply not there. I've seen much discussion of this problem here and elsewhere but not one satisfactory answer from XMarks. New profiles and re-installing Firefox does not solve the problem. I would prefer to use XMarks but if this isn't fixed soon I'm going to have to find an alternative bookmark syncing program. There has to be a solution to this.
-
If Xmarks doesn't appear after restart the problem is definitely Firefox's extension manager. Please look here: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/U... -
Inappropriate? This sounds like, from the new Internet Security Features, Microsoft, IE, Firefox, and other Security Programs (for example: Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2010 ) are working with so called Sandboxes, which are are removed after your Browser session. To keep them, the URL or Program neeeds to be in an so called trustet settings group. This may be dependant on the Software you are using.

Inappropriate?recently i installed a new Vista 64 machine, I used Firefox 3.5 and when i used Xmarks to set up, it would not complete the first synchronization. it has downloaded my bookmarks from the server but the wizard would never complete the process so i had to cancel. after restarting firefox it was asking me again to do the first set up. I reinstalled Xmarks. Same problem again. The other 2 Vista machines which were already installed were working with new firefox 3.5 and xmarks without problem
i switched back to Firefox 3.0.x (x=11) i think. My Xmarks worked as normal, i set up the account. A few days later i dared to upgrade Firefox to 3.5. Now it is working without problems.
Conclusion:
If you have the same problem I suggest you install first Firefox 3.0.x, set up Xmarks and then upgrade to Firefox 3.51 or later. it might work for you as well. -
I had also tried this solution as well and it didn't work for me. I couldn't get Xmarks to install on Firefox 3.0.x either on my Vista machine, yet on my laptop which runs on XP Xmarks installed on 3.0.x with no problem (and post upgrade to 3.5 Xmarks remained.). -
Inappropriate?I had similar problems with both WinXP and Vista PCs. I used IE to make sure my bookmarks on the Xmarks server were accurate. Then I did a forced download of the Xmarks server bookmarks to my Firefox 3.5.2 on XP and on Vista. Now both Firefoxes work and sync without any problems. (For now!)
