Will Shattered Horizon work on Windows XP?
Why don't you support Windows XP? Will you release a patch so that Shattered Horizon runs on Windows XP?

Shattered Horizon will not work with Windows XP. This is due to the requirement for DirectX10 graphics, which is only available on Windows Vista and Windows 7. Currently we have no plans to support XP, since the proportion of Vista and especially Windows 7 is growing fast.

Inappropriate?surely the percentage of XP users to Vista/Windows 7 operating systems is higher at the moment in time, although windows Vista and Windows 7 are now to the market and say more popular, XP is still widely used... my only concern is, will you not be losing out on your market profits by not producing say even a patch that will allow XP users to play this game too?
Personally, and im sure other may feel the same way, we would love to see this came compatible with XP operating systems as well. -
It is not possible to patch Shattered Horizon for Windows XP as the game uses a pure DirectX 10 engine. We would basically have to build a whole new engine just to support an OS that was released in 2001. It would be like re-recording an entire album just to release it on vinyl. This topic is discussed at length in our forum: http://futuremark.yougamers.com/forum... -
Exactly! -
Inappropriate? What a shame! I love FPS games & was just about to purchase SH from Steam - after watching the trailer. It looks very cool.
I will _never_ use *cough* vista & won't be 'upgrading' to 7 until MS discontinue support for XP (prolly late 2010 iirc). The vast majority of friends & online/ingame buddies feel the same.
Another sale(s) lost...
I’m disappointed
-
What is your reasoning though, just to spite MS? Truly it makes no sense not to upgrade, there's nothing inherently wrong with Windows 7 at all, in fact there are quite a few upgrades in everyday Windows use alone that makes it worth upgrading, much less the new features you'll gain in gaming with DX10 and 11. -
I would like to know as well. I understand not wanting vista, to a point..(it's been improved over the years, as people say) but Windows 7 is great out of the box. I got mine via student discount (only 30 dollars! some of my friends were able to get it for free from their colleges!) and it was the most painless windows install, ever. i didn't have to look up drivers or anything, windows update handled everything and i was fully set up, with all of my previous files and settings within 20-30 minutes. yes, this included video card drivers/network drivers/etc. performance is excellent (yes, even better than XP), and i'm not looking back! -
i will have to agree on this 1 i wont toss xp until theres no pheesable(misspelled?) way to use it considering how few bugs it has and how many things they took out of the change from xp to vista that i use daily ..... -
Inappropriate?Windows 7 is great, i've been using it for a while (only the RC, have to get around to buying it).
But after using 7, I would never want to go back to XP. -
Inappropriate?Gwanatu, I'm not so petty as to disregard an Operating System 'out of spite'...
I work in the IT industry & can tell you that nobody I know would jump onto a new OS until it has had a chance to 'mature', (e.g. c.6 months - or at least until a service pack has been released).
As for Vista, well... I'm not going to spend _any_ of my valuable time arguing with those deluded enough to think that it was in any shape or form a 'good' OS. It blew - EOS.
I am actually looking forward to using Windows 7 in anger. But the truth of the matter is, really: If your current setup functions within acceptable parameters (or even better; maxed right out) then there is _no need_ to upgrade.
I keep telling my less-pc-literate friends - who go out & buy a £200 GPU, then discover that it has given them no visible improvement whatsoever - that their 'old card' was more than capable of running _everything they could throw at it_ - that they're throwing their money away on a whim.
The most pertinate question here really is: Am I going to spend £100+ just so I can play one-out-of-a-hundred FPS games, when my current OS supports _every other game I want to play_?
And the answer is....?
I’m testifying
-
In a way Windows 7 is the "matured" Vista. It is really remarkable for a "SP 0" Microsoft OS in that it feels fully polished - something Vista really wasn't until SP2. Your choice, of course. I wouldn't touch XP with a ten foot pole any more... -

Inappropriate?well personally i still LOVE xp so i stick with it its simple doesnt put any extra load on my ram or proccesor... sure i cant use all 8 gb of my ram but i have a quad n really dont need anymore power than im already using and as zarathustra saidl..... theres HUNDREDS of FPS games out there that are able to be played on xp..... so i dont feel the need to change my full OS just to play this 1.... i mean i like the look of it all but they messed up on vista and they're trying 2 fix it with 7..... fail -.-
I’m indifferent...

Like it has been said previously, though. This isn't a question of OS, the reliance is on DirectX 10. It was Microsoft's decision to not write DirectX 10 compatibility into XP.
It's a shame, but DX9 really was on its last legs. -
Inappropriate?DirectX10 / Windows 7 has definitely matured to the point where this should not be a concern for modern computers that have the power to run this game.
Prior to Windows 7 I would be in full agreement about XP being superior to Vista, but as FM_Jarnis mentioned, Windows 7 really is a major improvement on Vista and every complaint I had about it is addressed.
Any computer capable of running this game should also be capable of running WIndows 7 with ease. (And would likely have come with Windows Vista anyway, which also supports dx 10) -
Inappropriate?Didn't some 3rd party of random coders do something like this for halo 3? Ive heard ways to patch halo 2 to work on xp and that's supposed to be vista only right?
Surely a big software company can handle something like this right?
Man, i love this game, but vista or windows 7 doesn't like my graphics card, and my system is perfectly capable of doing whatever is necessary to run this. One day i will play this awesome game...
I’m frustrated

Halo 2 was a DX9 game. It's "Vista Only" part was basically a check "If OS not Vista or later, then fail to run". Situation is very very different here - Shattered Horizon will run on any OS that has DX10, problem being that DX10 is not available for XP (and due to technical details related to XP kernel, cannot be without major changes to XP itself) -
Stephen, yes. There are a couple of releases that were DX10-only - that were then modified into a workable kludge for DX9 compatibility.
This is what I'm hoping will happen with SH. =] -
Wait, whos right? Jarnis or Zarathustra?
Can this be done for SH? Is it technically possible by any means for a patch to be made to allow xp to run it? -
Zarathrusta2k1: You are mistaken. The "Modified" games in question were Halo 2 for Windows and Shadowrun - both *DirectX9 games* that had a special "am I running on Vista?" checks inserted by Microsoft (for whatever reason they had, can't say...). Obviously such checks are easy to hack. Neither game used DX10.
Shattered Horizon uses DX10. There is no way to "hack" it to run on XP, save for either completely redoing the graphics engine or porting DX10 to XP. Both are tasks that I would consider to be completely infeasible to do. -
I think porting dx10 would be teh easier of the 2, lets get to work!!!

Okay maybe not, but still, maybe some random guy will go all Gung Ho + Chuck Norris and port dx10 to xp. -
Inappropriate?I totaly agree with people disliking vista. I tested it while using xp on another computer, and there is no doubt that vista was just a shot in the toilet. but we all know that vista wasnt supposed to be the finished product and that it was more a win 7 beta. Which totaly demonstrates how mircrosoft works, and we already ALL know that (microsoft blows)
But one gotto admit that win 7 stands his ground against xp. Im a huge xp fan and would have never completely changed to vista.
But its different for win 7. I changed for the sole purpose of playing this awesome game and i dont regret it.
Win 7 is just as great as xp. Well u cant really say great, as it is a microsoft(moneymaking machine) product. But for microsoft standard, those 2 are great OS and on par with each other.
I like it, and can recommend it. If ure not sure about win 7 but u want to play SH, then just upgrade it. Its probably one of the few version that runs great at realease (SP0)
And the win 7 installing is just great. Best one ever and i was so amazed. Really didnt expect that. I ran the dvd, started the quick format, and from there i didnt have to do anything and went to bed. Next morning i wake up and voila.....no didnt work, my mainboard acted weird and bios didnt start ;) but thats not related to win7..seriously, after fixing this " non win7 related problem" it started and win 7 was there, with all the drivers for every single component. Just had to update a few too make sure i got the newest ones. But everything worked and got installed correctly and for a computer newbie it would have been perfeclty fine to run like that.
I’m happy, Win 7 is suprisingly good
-
Inappropriate?I think it _was_ Halo that I remember downloading a DX9 patch for, but I'm not 100%
Lemme look back in my faves - hopefully I stored some info about it. Other than that, it's Google - but I will get back to you guys. =] -
Inappropriate?Guys, just forget it, its technicaly not possible to get this game running on XP
I’m unconcerned
