Very slow scripts on Jezebel, erratic comment functionality
Jezebel is having some erratic problems today:
First weird behavior:
There's a script that's crippling just about any browser I try (Firefox 3 on a mac, IE7 on a PC) that's causing Jezebel comments to load agonizingly slowly. I keep getting the message "This script is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. If the script continues to run, it may cause your system to become unstable. Do you want to abort the script?" (Hitting Yes or No on this dialogue box doesn't seem to change the site's performance either way.)
Second weird behavior:
-In IE7, some comment threads don't load at all. I'll refresh the page and the "Loading comments..." indicator appears and doesn't do anything. Refreshing the page a number of times will eventually get the comments to load quickly. Which is nice, but, on the posts that load quickly, some comments seem to be vanishing when I hit "submit". I just get sent to the top of the page while the comments reload.
There doesn't appear to be a pattern to this. Some posts had the first weird behavior and now exhibit the second, or started off with behavior #2 and now are doing #1.

Inappropriate?Just as an update - This still seems to be happening sporadically on 4/27/09. Right now I can't comment, though I was able to earlier today.
-
Inappropriate?I'm still having this problem as well, to the point where whatever is screwing up the pages is so bad that my IE7 freezes up. I've cleared my cache, etc, and it's still happening. The main page loads just fine, but when I attempt to read an individual post, the page starts to load fine, then freezes as it tries to load the entire thing.
The functionality issues are coming to the point where I'm thinking about just laying off Jez for a while because I don't have the time to wait five minutes for a page to sort itself out, which sucks hard. Normally Gawker is much quicker to get on problems like this.
I’m frustrated.

Inappropriate?I've been having this issue since maybe mid-last-week (Gizmodo, Jalopnik). Like the previous comment, the main pages load fine but clicking into a post locks Firefox up until eventually I get the following error:
Warning: Unresponsive Script
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, open the script in the debugger, or let the script continue.
I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.11 - work computer; can't upgrade - WinXP -
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem both at home and at work. I've resorted to disabling JavaScript which is really annoying on other sites.
TO GIZMODO: I wasn't surprised when you reported that your own website doesn't load right on mobile browsers. It's bloated!
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? The same fakakta script is souring my jezebel experience. It has gotten to the point where if I don't have a few hours to sit through slow page and comments loading, I just don't visit the site. I am NOT HAPPY.

Inappropriate? As of yesterday morning, I'm unable to post--the site seems to be exhibiting Weird Behavior #2 pretty much constantly now.
-
Inappropriate?I browse Gizmodo primarily and have been having the slowness issue for a bit.
Browser information (at work; also running the Flashblock add-on):
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.18) Gecko/20081030 Iceweasel/2.0.0.18 (Debian-2.0.0.18-0etch1)
I don't seem to have the issue at home in Gentoo running FF 3.0.8, or at least it is less prominent.
It often takes over two minutes of complete browser nonresponsiveness and CPU chugging to load a single page. I don't know what the issue is, but I'm afraid that it's led to my avoiding the site almost entirely. I do like Giz, but it is not worth the inconvenience and delay.
Also, I did try clearing my cache and cookies with no effect.
Hopefully this issue will be resolved soon, or at least commented on. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Problem solved, but you might need to clear browser cache.
To do so, load the site in your browser (e.g. lifehacker.com):
- IE press CTRL+F5
- FF press SHIFT+reload
- Safari - select Safari menu/Empty Cache; or SHIFT+reload
The company says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?Ugh! Hey Tom Plunkett- you're out of your mind if you think clearing cache and re-loading solves the problem. If it doesn't work for everyone, then the problem isn't solved!
I’m amazed this is still going on
-
dealia, thanks for the comment.
One thing that has been noted as an issue (in other tickets) is the fact that certain adblockers & firewalls are causing our system to break.
Can you provide the following:
- OS/browser info
- Add-ons (like adblock)
- Location: Corporate, home, both -
Inappropriate?Tom- still getting unresponsive script errors with FF 3.5.1, no ad blockers or add-ons installed, using only Mac firewall, running OS 10.4.11...
After clicking to stop the script from runnng on posts with a lot of comments, typing is SUPER slow.
Now I reply, type in the one line box and when I hit reply it just jumps to the top of the post.
When are the comments going to actually WORK?
I’m sick of random things not working.
-
Inappropriate? When loading an article I recieve the error: "a script running on the page is causing the IE to run slowly". Which is pretty accurate, comments section take a while to load, for a few day there the comments section wouldn't load at all.
I have seen this issue on several PCs running either IE7 or 8 for past month or so. The issue seems to be less frequent now but articles with 30 (+/-) or more comments trigger this error on my home PC. CTRL+F5 made no difference. Not running anything different that I was before this started....I dunno...a week ago....maybe more.
Issue is in both corporate and home enviroments. (AT&T ADSL/SDSL)
I’m only annoyed that this has yhet to be resolved. The presented fix seems to be anything but
-
The only "fix" that has worked for me is to wean myself off of Gawker media sites. I'm sick of them making my browser seize up. Oh well, they were fun while they worked. Everything on the internet jumps the shark eventually.
