share panel not working
No matter what I do, using several different browsers, turning off all pop-up blockers, etc... I cannot get the share panel to appear when I click on it.

Hi!
I assume you mean the Share icon button in Map Edit mode? This panel is actually going away (confusing for many users as well). Instead, save the map, then in the Map view page click on "Details" and you get the embed and links you can use to share the map.
Curiously, would you also like to have a "Share" that provides links to Reddit, Delicious, etc? (kind of like the 'Add this' buttons?)

Inappropriate?Actually, what I had hoped for was a way to create a static snapshot for PPT or Word, say a .png or .jpg. Also, in the Map View page, when I open the details I'm not seeing any way to share. If I go to the My Maps page and click on Details from there, I only get embeddable code. Yes, being able so quickly share in many venues would be great.
Very nice service so far, though. I just sat down with a group of China Scholars and showed them how to create a KML file in GE and bring it into Finder, then create a map in Maker. Their comment was that the modern features detract from their interest in using the app, since they are interested in 2nd century China. A clean basemap (Terrain only, no labels or other features) would be nice, too. Something like what Tom Patterson has created here: http://www.shadedrelief.com/world_rel... -
Inappropriate?yale.map.ninja,
Thanks for your email. I believe you are talking about the button that has the share/embed symbol on it in the upper right hand corner of your edit page when you are making/editing a page in Maker! This button is currently useless and will be taken out in our next big update.
But do not fear, you can still share your map through this process. 1. Make a map in Maker! 2. Save the map in Maker! 3. View the saved version of the map in Maker! (by clicking 'view map' after you save the map in edit mode or click on my maps on the maker homepage and access the map there) 4. Open the details box (link in the upper right hand corner) 5. Click the link that says, "Do you want to embed this map in your website?". This will provide you with an embed code that you can use to place in your map in your blog/website.
We have currently disabled the share button in edit mode because we thought it would be best to not be able to share unfinished maps in edit mode.
Thanks and let us know if this works for you.
Best,

Inappropriate?Yep - PNG/PPT export... stay tuned.
Regarding simplified basemap - there are a few options. We are making some new styles that are very simple, and will checkout Tom's Natural Earth.
I'm curious - though - do the Scholars have historic maps they might like to use as the basemap instead? -
Possibly... but it depends on the venue. In an interactive webmap, that would be great, but if one is creating a map for print or static presentation it might make it too busy. But yes, the ability to add GeoTiffs, etc... might be a cool addition. -
An additional FYI is that Tom's basemaps are unrestricted, so I assume they could be used within your apps without problems.
