"Reward system" for active users
Hi there,
I'm just at the moment thinking about "how much" time and effort I put into Get Satisfaction in terms of ideas I share, questions I ask and problems I report (mainly all to your company, Get Satisfaction) and how many new companies, products and services I add. I'm not saying I'm "great" nor that I'm the one putting "a lot" (or the most) effort in here, but somehow, just the idea of a little "reward system" for doing all this stuff, came to my mind. Maybe just like the points you get on Yahoo! Answers.
Maybe in the long run you could work together with some larger, "richer" ^_^ firms (which of course also joined GSFN and are present here) and set-up a reward system including real reward points like...(I don't know what's there in the USA, UK and AU, but here we do have e.g. "webmiles", "Payback" and "Miles & More")... frequent flyer points for example or any other loyalty program reward points...
For the process: You could track:
* Answers given
* Answers given, that were marked "one of the best points" / "this solves the problem"
* Bugs reported
* Ideas contributed
* Ideas contributed, that were implemented
* Companies and products created (don't know if it would be possible to also track down if you added single elements?)
etc.
I look forward to see you make fun of me. ;-)

Inappropriate?Well, I'm certainly not going to make fun of you, Phillip. We talk about rewards, but we don't have anything in place yet. If I had my way, we'd send our best users cupcakes in the mail, but I suppose that doesn't scale very well, does it?
I don't know if we're ready to adopt an awards system like you often see with credit cards and airlines, but I am sure there are systems out there that would gladly help us implement similar systems. I would want to make sure we didn't stray into coupon or "green stamps" territory, though. I guess the hard part is coming up with rewards that really do feel valuable and that don't seem like tiny, incremental busy-work points.
There's another side of consumer rewards, too, I suppose: charity. Maybe if we could find the right type of system that helped reward charitable organizations, that could be a great way to encourage the best among us to participate.
Another thing that is possible is that companies on our site can implement their own reward system. We've seen at least one company give a discount for retail purchase by Get Satisfaction users.
Great food for thought, Phillip. I definitely like the idea of rewards. I think we need to explore this idea a bit more.

Hahaha. Sorry, but cupcakes don't scale well yes. :D And you really seem to be rich, as you are often recently, aren't you? ;-) Concerning "cc's & airlines", of coourse, this idea was looooooooooooooooooongterm! I know this business a little and this takes a major upfront investment, so not a "fun, easy" thing!...I do also hate "coupons", they're stupid and a waste of paper! One idea I do have, would be maybe simply send out "geek stuff" like a Get Satisfaction coffee mug and/or a t-shirt or so! =)) Plus some guerilla marketing stickers if needed. ;-) -
Concerning charity: That's a great idea!! You could both give to children charities e.g. (I think that is what I would do most likely ;)) or do some CO2 "neutralisation" through buying some certificate stuff to lower / erase the footstep your customers / best users or you as a company produce(d).
Great ideas anyway Eric, I'm impressed! =) -
Totally. I'd be up for sending out Get Satisfaction t-shirts. I started a list of silly t-shirt ideas about two months ago. Need to keep working on it. -
hahaha. ^_^ I think cool t-shirts are really great, especially when they're "silly" but not too nerdy. If you'll bring them together in a "Get Satisfaction Merchandising stuff" Spreadshirt store or so that would be the best solution I bet. :) -
Inappropriate?Fwiw, the folks at http://boardgamegeek.com use the concept of badges. For example, here is Scott Alden's user page. You'll notice the large avatar surrounded by several small badges. You can tell what each badge means by hovering over it.
Jeff and Joel at Stackoverflow also intend to use badges.
Edited to add:
Amazon.com has been using badges to highlight their Top 1000 reviewers too. -
Hey mdy, thanks for this post, that's a great idea! I also know such a thing from some forums, but had forgotten about it. Cool stuff! :) -
Inappropriate?I think a point system like Yahoo Answers would be a great way to encourage more user response! Maybe something like a point for sharing an Idea, a point for replying, and 5 points if someone marks it as useful response...
That is one of the main reasons why Yahoo Answers is still a really successful part of Yahoo! People love being 'rewarded' for contributing!
So I'm not really going as far as Philipp, ...actually getting 'real points', but just a ranking of how much a customer is contributing ;)

Inappropriate?In the of case software companies I wouldn't reject a free copy of the next update or at least a discount. But even if it is not a software company I'd still love to receive software (by my choice preferably) as a reward - and software is easier for companies to send as a gift than say T-shirts.
But above all, I'd love an idea of mind to be considered for implementation as a reward for all the rest ideas I've contributed.
