Allow users to share details with companies
I would like to be able to define details that I can share with companies, especially when reporting bugs. Examples include global-level details (my OS), company-specific details (my username), and product-specific details (version of the product I'm using). These examples are software-oriented, but could apply to other companies as well.
This would obviously be opt-in as not everyone would be comfortable sharing their username, etc.
When creating a question/idea/problem/praise, I should then be able to choose from a list which details I want to add to this issue. (Having an "all by default" option would be great.)
Example: Under global I have defined a field called "OS" with a value "Windows Vista", under Widgetr Corp (the company) I've defined "username" "kwill" and under Desktop Widgetr app (the product) I've defined "version" as "0.9.2".
I report a problem for Desktop Widgetr app. Next to it all the fields and their values appear. (But if I was reporting a problem for Gadget Corp, only the "OS" field would appear.)
The company responds and asks which version of Vista I'm using, so I *update* my field to say "Windows Vista Home Premium 32". This serves me well in future issues that I track with this and other companies!
Points of trickiness:
* The fields should not update in old issues. If I reported a problem 6 months ago and I've upgraded in the meanwhile, it may not apply anymore, and this would be confusing.
* It should be easy for customers to add or or companies to request new fields when looking at a topic (e.g. Company asks, "Which browser are you using?" and adds a "browser" field, customer comes back to topic and fills it in (and chooses whether to make it global/company/product-specific))
* Maybe there should be topic-specific fields too.
* My assumption is that like everything else, this sharing is public. I am not suggesting anyone wants to or should share passwords, personal info, etc.
* Link details. If I'm providing my username for a webapp, in most cases it would probably be useful to link to my profile on that webapp.
OR, is all this already covered in part by http://www.getsatisfaction.com/getsat... - in which case I'd like to focus this suggestion on providing an easy way for me as casual user, rather than a company, to provide this information repeatedly.

Inappropriate?Awesome writeup, and it sounds like you have some experience of the gotchas that emerge from the complexity that features like this necessarily bring.
This is a feature that I call custom data fields, and it is posted to my pinboard as an important area for development. Your ideas here will be very very useful as we start designing. We'll undoubtedly keep the initial version as simple as possible, of course, and then expand it as needed.

Glad to hear it's somewhere on the roadmap. It's amazing how sometimes just knowing that can give satisfaction. -
Inappropriate?Yes I'd love this - in fact I just posted an idea around a similar notion: http://getsatisfaction.com/getsatisfa...
I’m happy
