Any news about the Getsatisfaction "new interface"
Hi Getsatisfaction! I searched for a major thread I could just add to about an "improved getsatisfaction interface", but I couldn't find one that really fit the bill!
So I ended making this new post to ask for news about the "new and improved" getsatisfaction interface, which would incorporate most (?) of the great input floating around all over this group!
Thanks!

Inappropriate? We're in a pretty iterative mode, so what we do release will be inevitably changed. It's always going to be changing, so "new" might always be a relative term for us -- or at least in the next year!
That said, I'm actually writing about our new topic page right now. I'll be blogging about that when that page is ready to go, perhaps by tomorrow. More probable that it will be Monday. What will be new about that page (this page you're looking at right now, actually) is a lot of "status" related items -- ability to mark problems as "solved", viewing stats about each topic, pushing the "best" solutions from the company to the top, a mood meter to see how everyone in the room "feels", new ways to comment on people's replies. Plus, we'll have a few more ways to share topics with other people both inside and outside of Get Satisfaction.
Beyond that, we've got a ton of company-specific tools we're working on, and those will be rolled out in the coming months in phases (for more about that, see here: http://blog.getsatisfaction.com/2008/...).
We also added an improved "new topic" posting page recently, which we're really happy about. We wrote about that here if you missed it: http://blog.getsatisfaction.com/2008/....
Hope that helps. I always blog about big feature changes, so that's one way to hear about it.

Inappropriate?Okay thanks very much Eric. I've added the blog's RSS feed to my reader.
I’m thankful
-
Thanks for subscribing! Warms a blogger's heart. -
Inappropriate? You might have noticed.. we've just deployed a pretty significant revamp of the topic page.

yay comments! -
Inappropriate?Yes, I just noticed! Looks good. I was going to start a new conversation about this new interface, but perhaps this is the best place to have people weigh in.
I’m new and improved
-
Inappropriate?Hi Scott! Yes I did notice it but not how you might have wanted me to :-)!
I think you rolled it in while I was composing a particularly long reply (not a new posted item) to someone's post. So instead of becoming a nested reply, it became a comment and all my html tags didn't show up!
But no big! I just re-did it as another posted item and it's all good now. The first comment however is still there, long and ugly! Can I still take it down please?
Also (and maybe this was just a glitch) on my re-posted item, I tried clicking the "edit (for 15 minutes)" link but nothing happened. Will try it again when I post something else.
I also saw:
the Mood Meter - nice!
the Share / Follow box - great idea!
I’m happy
-
There! I tried the "edit" option again on this post of mine - nothing happened... :-) -
Yes, I will gladly take it down. I noticed, too, as I was following the conversation. -
Oops! Sorry about that. Hope it wasn't too much trouble. -
Nope, no trouble. I compose in notepad so I still had the original text when it happened :-) -
Always a sound course of action Rene! I've got some code around here to auto-save forms into our database, but it hasn't yet been finished :) -
Inappropriate?Thanks guys.
I noticed the changes and came looking for a post explaining them. I found this thread.
It's looking good. I still need to do some exploring though. I understand all about iterative change, but it is always exciting to see something "new", while knowing that the next "new" thing is just around the corner :-)
I’m excited
-
We'll be publishing a blog post this morning to explain the changes. Just want to iron out one or two little bugs. Thanks for your patience! -
Inappropriate?Looks good, just a couple of points here:
1) Isn't it a bit odd that anyone can label any reply by a rep as a "Company Reply"? What if the rep is just voicing his own opinion and someone comes along and labels it as a "company reply"?
2) Can you explain the differences between a comment and a reply? -
1) That's a bug. :( -
i can try! we're experimenting with the ability to add a comment to anybody's reply, like this one here, that shows up much smaller and less prominent on the page, in the context of the initial reply. we noticed a *lot* of the activity on topic pages was comments like "that helped!" or "nice!" and we wanted to find a way to allow people to jot short messages like that without them taking up too much of the thread or getting emailed to everybody who's participating. and so, comments! i'm sure we'll be iterating the feature as we go along, so any thoughts you have are more than welcome. -
oh and, this is implied above, but just to be clear: comments only get emailed to the person who's reply they're responding to, not everybody who's participating in the topic. -
fixed. Thanks ezuk! -
Inappropriate?Oh, and another thing:
I've noticed that I can now set a status for problems -- "solved", "in progress", etc.
The thing is that most users actually post their problems as "questions" in our forum (sfn/Tibbo). And for Questions, I can't do that (I think). Right?
Any workaround to this? Can I re-classify a question as a problem, if I'm the admin?
I’m liking the new changes!
-
And I believe Thor wins' the day (inside joke) -
Inappropriate? The biggest problem I see is the change from "mark as useful" to "this answers the question". In the past, when I found a response helpful and informative, I would "mark it as useful", even if it didn't actually "answer the question". Now, when I review those old posts, it says "You say this answers the question". No, I don't say that. YOU say that. Retroactively rewording my contributions is dishonest, it does not reflect what I actually did, and I don't appreciate it. I can avoid using that feature in the future (unless a post "answers the question"), but all those old answers improperly overstate my position, and are more likely to confuse a n00b who doesn't realize that the post he's reading doesn't "answer the question".
I’m disappointed that no one thought this through
1 person says
this answers the question
-
Oh, we thought it through. We also saw the lack of people starring topics and decided to make things more explicit in the face of changing some people intent. I'd be happy to remove your data. -
We actually use(d) the "mark as useful" over in the PBwiki section; I can't speak for the others. I don't want you to "remove my data"; I want my data to remain as it was when I posted it. If I mark something as useful, that's because it was, well, useful. For you to decide that my comment should mean something else is dishonest. -
It's dishonest in your opinion, which is, of course, wrong in mine. To use a beta service and not expect things to change or be removed is setting yourself up for disappointment. Your comment of "This is useful" should now be posted as comments like this. -
Over in Hubdub, the "mark as useful" was used -- dare I say, more than it wasn't!
The problem with it was the repetition of the same comment in the message thread. With message threads exceeding 150 posts, this duplication was an annoyance -- not to mention confusing to a newbie.
Rather than move the starred message to the top, leave it in context, in the thread.
Maybe put a widget near the top of the question to allow users to view the "most useful" questions if they wanted to.
I'm sorry to see it go. -
what a load of crap, scott, where does it say on this page, for example, that i'm using a beta service? and where does it say that my content and context within can be altered? i was forced to use this service by PBwiki, there was no choice, so all and all, 'using a beta service' is hardly an argument in this case. and by the way the new interface stinks, in my opinion -
Hey vangispen, do you have any specific feedback on what's stinky about this new interface? We'd love to hear it. -
Cameron, I don't think vangispen got an email about your question. -
Inappropriate? Not a fan of the new comments - liked proper threading much better.
Big fan of the 'mark as solved' etc stuff - would be nice if that showed up in search results/browsing listings and stuff instead of just when you hit the actual page
Would be nice to be able to mark as solved without having to write a reply -
Yes, we were just talking about how to make it possible to mark it w/o replying. You're sharp! -
Hey Stephen, we never actually had "proper threading" any more than we do with the comments. The layout was still only two-level as you see now. The only *real* difference is that we're now trying to downplay the second level comments, but further discussion is welcome. Do we have a topic for "What do you think of the comments?" yet? -
I don't think we do have a topic specifically about the comments. I may just start one, then. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?I'd also like to be able to un-say something solves the problem, like I used to be able to un-mark something as useful
-
agreed! we're working on putting that back in right now. -
Inappropriate?Any chance we can make URLs / links clickable in the comments?
Also, I noticed that new lines don't seem to work in comments. Tried inserting a newline elsewhere and everything got lumped into one paragraph. Was that a deliberate design decision? -
We decided to keep comments as simple as possible. No html, no links, no line breaks. This is obviously up for debate. -
Yes, with the downplayed comments, we chose not to allow HTML and also to not add any linebreaks. This helps keep 'em short. We should probably turn auto-linking back on. -
Inappropriate?Hmm... might be nice to have a 'duplicate of...' status, if someone requests a requested feature, and then just put in the URL of the other getsatisfaction thread.
Also (somewhat unrelated) might be nice to be able to switch questions to problems or suggestions -
+1 for Thor, as he has also mentioned meeting this "switching" desire. -
that's a great idea! we're considering some other interesting things we could do with comments, and we'll definitely look @ this as part of that. -
We are planning a tool to deprecate topics, and also a tool to redirect discussions from one topic to another that will be closely related to the first tool. We'll be sure to post on the blog when we launch them. -
Inappropriate?Do people who comment on an item get emailed comments on that item? That might be a nice option.
Oh, and, I'm saying a lot, so I should just say that overall I like the changes :) -
Inappropriate?yup! they do. but nobody else.
-
What Lane said. -
Inappropriate? My dashboard still has links that say 'mark as useful'
Also, if comments that show up on my dashboard had more context right there (in in the feed) than just what thread they were on that would make email notifications no longer necessary for me. -
We've been tossing around a lot of ideas on how to upgrade the dashboard. We'll be launching into that work as soon as we can, but we have a ton on our plate so I don't have a good idea of a timetable for you. -
Inappropriate? The "edit" function isn't working for me ... when I click on "edit", I get a "glimpse of a window opening and a message saying "loading your reply to..." -- but that's all (other than a new "reply" window)..
Bottom line: I can't edit.
The new "15 minute" info about edit/delete is a nice touch.
What I'd like the most most would be a message PREVIEW feature, which would occur before posting the actual message.
That would enable me to correct any html errors, or allow other formatting changes I might wanna make, BEFORE posting.
As it is, if a message reply contains errors, that message, with errors, is emailed out to everyone subscribed to that post. -
+1 for the preview please. 8-) -
Yes, this is the second "preview" request today -- online and offline! -
Ditto on the preview. Last time I looked, each edit sends a new message, so an HTML-heavy reply can generate multiple emails for a single post. -
Editing a reply does not resend email messages. -
Preview is hot!! -
Scott, is that a recent change? I got both edit's of vangispen's comments yesterday evening. -
vangispen double posted -
I just tested it, and yes, the first edit is the only one that gets emailed; subsequent edits are ignored. Since GS sends the entire post text (unlike most other forums, who only send a link), I know that I have gotten in the habit of reading the text in the email, and only clicking through if I had something to add. I guess we'd better get it right the first time, eh? -
Perhaps you could trigger the email when the 15-minute timer runs out? -
Inappropriate?FYI -- just tried to edit the above post. Same error.
Using Vista -- if that helps. (Vista sucks!) -
I'm also unable to edit - Windows XP on Firefox 2.0.0.13 -
BTW, I just tried to edit a "Comment". I received the same "loading your reply" window ... which froze. When I tried to close it, my comment was gone as well. A refresh did bring back the original comment intact (with no further option to edit it.) -
Inappropriate?Topic about the editting errors are going on here: http://getsatisfaction.com/satisfacti...
-
Hi GS team! Sorry to take you back in time but I've been away and am playing catch-up!
Procedurally, maybe this post of Scott's announcing a topic-thread where a new change can be discussed, is the way all newly rolled-out features should be announced. :-) -
Hey, it even shows up on the product page ("GS has something to say to you"). Perfect! -
Inappropriate?Vangispen said:

The very first item in our terms of service explain the nature of our beta software. In bold letters even. I'm sorry you've not been made aware that we are working to improve this product and that sometimes mean features change or even go away. If you haven't seen the Terms of Service, it's linked in the footer on every page, and also it is linked to from the community guidelines.
That said, if you would like me to go through our data store and change the 5 "mark as useful" stars that you've given to "I find this useful" comments, I'd be happy to. We didn't change the intent of stars to piss you off. We think it will make for a more helpful system for everyone by making it explicit why someone should click on the "star" link.
Just to make things clear, this service is early, and we will continue changing it. Expect it. Sometimes the changes will be big, sometimes they will be small. You yourself have talked about things you don't like. How are we to fix them without changing the site? Telling yourself that everything you've ever done on the site will remain in its exact same form is being dishonest to yourself.
As to being "forced" to use this service, I'll only bring up the fact that you aren't forced to use anything, and while the pbwiki community would surely miss your contributions, if you don't think Satisfaction is a service you want to put your effort into I'm sure that you could kick start something on the web that would fit your bill. Hey, in fact, if you have development skills, I'd be happy to work with you on crafting an interface into the system that you do like using our API. You could create a home that suits your style better but not have to give up the pbwiki community. -
Extremely thoughtful and diplomatic reply. -
Hear hear! Great, (wait for it...) Scott! -
Inappropriate?Scott, et. al.,
The problem that vangispen and others are having may not be obvious
from your side of the tracks, so to speak. Let me use an analogy to
see if I can shed some light.
Imagine a firefighter, who has a nice shiny truck. He uses this truck
several times a day, every day, in order to do his job, which is fight
fires. He knows where all the ladders and hoses are, as does everyone
else, and there's no confusion about where the tools are and how to
use them when it's time to fight a fire.
One morning, he gets a call, and heads out on his truck. When he gets
to the fire, he finds that his ladders have been moved, and no one
told him. The hoses are different lengths, and there are other, more
subtle changes that he hasn't even noticed yet. This makes it very
difficult for him to do his job. After all, his job is fighting
fires.
He's not happy, so he contacts the company who made the truck, only to
be told that the fine print says that "we can, and will, change your
truck around anytime we feel like it, because the fine print says we
can". He's not happy, so the truck company says "well, then, don't
use our truck".
We're just trying to put out fires here. I know you guys are trying
to make the best fire truck you can, but that doesn't help us get our
jobs done. We're also very busy trying to do our own jobs, and so we
don't always have the time to help you work on your fire truck. Hell,
most of us aren't even truck mechanics; we're firemen.
I don't have a solution, mostly because it's not my area of expertise.
But that doesn't mean there's not a problem.
I’m just trying to do my job
1 person says
this answers the question
-
I appreciate the metaphorical bent, but it does seem to stretch things a bit. We're trying to re-imagine the fire truck called customer service, which I think most people would agree is broken in general. We won't get it all right (right away), but I do think we can build a better fire truck that will help everyone put out fires in a better way. If you have skills that can help build it, great. If you don't want to help build it, that's fine, too. But, we hope everyone will stick around. -
It's not a matter of not wanting to help. It's hard enough support PBwiki (beta) with a stable CS platform. Having an *unstable* CS platform makes it that much more difficult to do *our* jobs, never mind doing yours. But I think you understand perfectly well what I'm saying, so I'll drop it. -
Inappropriate?I don't understand the change in promoting terminology from "useful" to "this answers the question".
IF the plurality of topics by users (across all clients) were actually questions, then perhaps it would make sense ... but even then, in my view, it would still be simply registering an opinion.
I'd cheer-lead for you to revert to the common sense terminology used on most forums that have a "promote feature" -- using "useful", "helpful", etc., rather than constantly begging the question. -
Inappropriate?NewsWrangler: Thanks for asking this.
Our overriding goal for this feature change is to encourage answers to questions. Maybe not definitive answers, but as close as possible. There's just so much more value to be had from encouraging these conversations to have productive outcomes.
You're right: Marking things as "useful" definitely does serve a purpose, and we're working on creating a new feature that lets people add some sort of plus to register assent like this (and perhaps a minus for dissent). Right now, the new comments feature serves as a way to add the kind of useful/not useful shorthand to replies, but we have a lot of other ideas about how to do this. If we do it well, we should also be able to also see who the most helpful people on Get Satisfaction are (and the least helpful!).
Appreciate this feedback. I am going to start a new discussion on Get Satisfaction about our new comments feature. If anyone wants to give feedback about that, you can do that here: http://getsatisfaction.com/satisfacti...
I’m hoping this helps
-
"sort of plus to register assent like this (and perhaps a minus for dissent)"
Ooh, karma! Please make sure it handles large negative numbers! -
also, the language doesn't say "This answered the question" if the topic isn't a question. The language is specific to the topic type (questions, problems, ideas, discussions). Good feedback, though. -
Inappropriate?our terms of service explain .. you agree to provide the feedback and test results that Get Satisfaction may reasonably request during the Beta Period.
I can not comply.
I’m out.
-
Indeed, it may be time to review our language there. I think it may have been over-lawyered! -
Inappropriate? The functionality is great! The UI is cute, but VERY confusing and busy.
I’m concerned
-
Thanks for the feedback. Can you be any more specific on what you found confusing? -
There's an overwhelming about of "stuff" on each page, no visual hierarchy of fonts and most of the content visually runs together (needs more spacing). -
Allan, are you speaking of this topic page that we're currently using to discuss, or a different page (or multiple pages)? If you could let us know, that would help a lot. Thanks! :) -
I found setting up a company and products very confusing. I think the comments on each reply should be folded up and expanded if the user wants them open. Everything looks good, but the flow between doing things is poor. -
Also I would pay for this app, I love it, its really great. The happy face stuff is cute but not needed.
