It's a way for third-party developers to pull in elements of our site into their own site -- or do a bunch of other things. It's kind of technical, but basically it's a way for developers to build things that work well with our site. I think Wikipedia can probably explain it more concisely than I can: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API
