Editing?
On the new PBwiki Skin, editing a post does not work. I can click on the link, but no edit option appears.
Also, even though I posted something 8 minutes ago, the edit link disappears before my 15 minutes are up.

Regarding your excellent feedback about editing, and the possible blocking of editing, by someone commenting quickly after a reply is posted, we want to try something, and we want you to help us make sure it works!
What we’re going to do is allow editing of replies for the whole 15 minute window, regardless of whether or not someone has commented. This leaves us susceptible to some edge case problems, but that’s where you, our awesome Get Satisfaction users, come in.
We would like you to watch for any malicious use of the editing window. That might mean someone posts an inflammatory reply, instigating a bunch of comments, then changes that reply at the last moment, completely altering its content or meaning. (I think Guy is the man for this job, if anyone can do it!)
I’m pushing out this update before I go home today. Enjoy, and please let us know if it causes any problems.
I’m excited

The editing problems are fixed!
I'll discuss the comments raised above with the design team. It won't be too complex to adjust the editing permissions to allow editing for the full 15 minutes even after responses have been made. Thanks again for the feedback, everyone!

Thanks, Scott! And mdy! And Rachel! -
Great Scott! LOL. (Sorry, couldn't resist).
Just wanted to add that now it seems that edit and delete links have disappeared altogether from both replies and comments. Even though my reply is currently 9 minutes old. -
Inappropriate?+1
In my case, when I click Edit:
- the reply I posted becomes four minutes old (even though I literally just posted it seconds ago).
- an edit box with a "loading the reply" message appears briefly, but disappears almost right away, and I'm back to a view of my uneditable post.
- clicking the delete link doesn't seem to work.
Also, I noticed that the edit and delete links disappear if I leave the topic page then come back to it, even if the 15 minutes aren't over yet.
I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.13 on WinXP
------------
Edited to add: After I refreshed the page, it seems that edit and delete work now for replies. Yay! But the edit and delete links disappeared from the comments. -
Inappropriate?Hi guys...
Just a quick update: I've got another task that I'm required to finish before I leave today. Given that, Cam is going to take over solving this problem, so you should expect him to comment on solving these issues. I'm travelling tomorrow and I need to get this other thing done before I leave :)
Thanks! -
It's still not working. -
He's still working on it. -
Cool. I also did not get an email about your comment, which I'm guessing you intended as a reply to my comment. Perhaps comment notifications could go to the person who made the post they're commenting on, *and* previous commenters, just in case someone makes the natural mistake of replying to a comment with a comment? -
Inappropriate?Wow, what a day. I've managed to pin down a number of little issues in the new topic pages and we'll be pushing an update pretty soon. Thanks for the feedback! We really appreciate it.

Thanks for working on this Cameron, we appreciate it! -
Inappropriate? It seems some of Cameron's updates have gone out.
I still can't edit a reply right after I post it (the reply becomes editable for a like half a second then becomes non-editable again).
But I've found that if I refresh the page, the Edit and Delete links are still visible (they weren't before) and when I click the Edit link, the screen will load my reply into an editable textbox.
I still can't seem to edit comments, though.

Edited to add:
I tried to edit this reply after refreshing the page but the Edit and Delete links had disappeared even though I was within the 15 minutes. So I posted the comment that you see below.
After I posted the comment, I clicked on Edit for the comment, but it didn't load properly, so I just Canceled the comment edit. When I canceled the edit, my comment disappeared from the page. So I refreshed the page again and saw that the comment was still there. I also noticed that after refreshing, the Edit and Delete links for this reply reappeared. Which is why I'm now able to add these two paragraphs. -
Well, that was shortlived. It seems I can't edit replies again, even after a page refresh. LOL. -
Hey mdy, I just realized what may be a confusing UI bug that we'll have to fix (after we push out this first group of fixes): Once you've commented on a reply, it can't be edited anymore, regardless of the timer. Same goes for Topics once a reply is posted. This is a decision we made so that once people have started a conversation about a given thing, the source of that conversation is fixed. If you'd like to discuss further, maybe start a new topic. I'm game. I love talking with our users, they always give good insights. -
Cameron, that decision *really* makes reply preview important; since the edit cycle now is "post, edit, update", speedy commentors can "lock" your reply before you're finished with it. -
I agree with Guy. Especially since I often misspell blockquote as blockqoute. and have to hurry and fix it when I screw up a quote. A preview functional would really help that. -
We might also revisit the idea of locking editing after someone else comments. Is it that big of a deal? Could someone really retroactively change their content to do something malicious to a commenter? -
Hi Cameron. I understand the logic behind locking down the reply once someone else has posted a comment. I think most people won't mind as long as it's explained clearly. And Guy, I'm all for the ability to preview my reply (be it in real-time or even if I'm required to click a [Preview] button first), so I'm in complete agreement with you there. -
Scott -- perhaps one possible way to handle the "locking down" of replies after someone else has commented on it is to only allow people to append rather than edit. Kinda like how you handle accounting errors -- you don't change the original transaction; instead you enter an adjustment entry. -
Inappropriate?Hey everyone! We are really close to getting the fix for editing replies and comments pushed out the door this morning. I worked on it all day yesterday. I even found a couple little bugs that might have surprised us later, and I (and Ted) fixed those, too.
I'm typing this from home, but once I make the quick trip to the office and confirm that we've got everything working again, we'll make it live.
I, personally, really appreciate the feedback you have all given us about our new work. This new topic page layout was about a month in the making, a complete rewrite! So thanks for catching the things I missed and appreciating the things we all (the design team was absolutely critical for this page) got right.

The trick is, getting suitable replies in that 15-minute window. I'll see what I can do. :P -
One possibility you may want to consider -- still allow people to edit a reply after someone else has commented on it, but automatically insert a "edited on [timestamp]" note at the bottom (maybe in gray?). That way there's some evidence that the reply had been edited, even if we don't know exactly where the edit was. -
Inappropriate?I'm glad to see the editing glitches have been fixed.
Suggestion: Transpose the Delete and Edit buttons/links ... and increase the amount of space between them.
I think (but am not sure) that "Edit" used to come before "Delete" in the previous version ... in any event, I'm of the view that "Edit" is used wayyyy more than "Delete" -- and anything you can do to assist in reducing user error is a good thing!
I'd be [cough] unhappy to lose a finely crafted message due to hitting the "first" link.
Of course, a Preview Function ;-) would eliminate the need to do much of what is now done via the edit function. -
good idea on the transpose. preview's a little more work. :) -
Yes, we have transposed one or two things, I believe. Thanks for the eagle eyes! -
I also like the transposed (Edit *then* Delete) order better. I'll probably get that in after I bring back the ability to undo clicking "This answers the question" links.
