I only just discovered that you support commas in your tags!
So I was entering tags delicious-style (combined words, no commas) since you supoort delicious by default and now I come to realize that you don't support delicious tagging but comma-separated tags!

Inappropriate?Would this be solved by always including some explanation text whereever tags can be added? We purposely did comma separated so that you don't have to put quotes around multiple word tags.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? This explanation existed at one point. I left it out of the latest implementation of the topic form to save space. I figured it would come up. I'll work it back in. Thanks Chris!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Yeah, that sucks! I hate it when new services break del.icio.us/Flickr-style tag inputting. Please support space-separated tags too.

I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?the problem is, if we support space-based tags, we lose the ability for people to easily enter multiword tags without using quotation marks. which for most people who don't use delicious (ie, most people), that's crazy confusing.
prior to implementing this feature, we chatted with a bunch of other companies implementing tags (six apart, crowdvine, couple others), and the general consensus was that comma-based tags which allow for multiple word entries generally face the standard user test better.
not to mention that flickr has gone and implemented comma-based tagging too, for just this reason (try it out..)! -
Inappropriate? This is certainly contentious, but I would argue that delicious turned people into machines by using weird concatenated tags from the beginning... I really have grown to love Ma.gnolia, Flickr and others' approach of supporting multiple styles of tagging... i.e. if you have many tags separated by spaces, they're treated as space separated, whereas if you do use commas anywhere, they switch to comma-separated. It can be a little confusing if you use a two-word, space separated phrase because the former algorithm will end up treating them as separate tags.
Anyway, showing an example like below the tag interface should suffice: "Example tags: customer service, support".
I’m relieved

Inappropriate?yeah, we use "hot dogs, cake, pie" as the example in the topic submission, and "help, tips, and photo uploads" on the topic page itself. got a preference? :)
-
Inappropriate?I prefer the latter... at least in that it actually relates to the kind of data you'll be entering. "hot dogs, cake, pie" really doesn't have much to do with Satisfaction (except for the cupcake icons) whereas "help, tips, and photo uploads" (without the 'and', I hope!) gives people a model for behavior that helps prime them for what kind of input would be useful.
I’m satisfied
-
Inappropriate?Wait, so, do you mean that the algorithm automatically detects if I'm doing the comma-separated or the space-separated thing?
If so, then why isn't every tool implementing that?
I’m perplexed
-
Inappropriate?well, 'cause it mostly works, though if you do one multiword, non-comma-separated tag, it bombs. but we'll definitely look into it!
