Inappropriate? No, there is not an option to ask questions privately. We have thought about this kind of option, whereby companies and customers could connect in a private manner, but it's not something we currently offer. We're very big on openness and transparency and putting it all out there. That said, we do also know that there are details like account numbers and credit card numbers that people are (rightly) reluctant to share.
We're always having discussions about this, though, and your input is really valuable. So, please let us know what you think. I'm assuming you are speaking of the same kind of customer-company speech that I'm talking about. Or, did you have something else in mind?
I’m glad you asked

Inappropriate?Shoot. I understand the drive for openness, but am disappointed in the "all or nothing" approach that overlooks extensions to the use of Satisfaction that would only feed your original intents. I have a group of alpha users who are under NDA and I would love to use satisfaction to collaborate with them. When a feature moves from drawing board to a public beta, or when I had filed my provisional patent :-), I could then simply flag some subset of the discussions to bubble up to public view.
Let me know if you change your mind. Nice tool overall.
Casey
I’m disappointed.

Inappropriate?Well, as we go along, we will undoubtedly make this kind of public-private detail more sophisticated. We'll definitely keep this kind of request in mind.
-
Inappropriate?it's definitely not that we're not interested in adding that kind of private/public relationship to the application, it's just that we're a small company with limited resources, and when we ask ourselves what we can do that's truly different from standard company-customer relations, being firmly committed to openness and transparency is the thing that really stands out. there are many ways to have private conversations between companies and customers, and far fewer that are about the public ones. :)
that said, longer term i agree that use cases like alpha/beta groups and being able to segment off conversations for that purpose will be really valuable, and i'm confident we'll get there with the product; it's just not as high up on the priority list as some of the other features we're considering, for the above reason.

Inappropriate?seems like making anonymous suggestions, in the open, is a good comprimise... you shoudl offer this option.

Yes, yes! Please add this to the basic account. It's such a pain to have customers log-in. I'm afraid they will be less inclined to post if they have to sign-up first! -
Inappropriate?I am not sure what the get-satisfaction reps are really talking about in terms of a private relationship... i think what the original poster, and certainly myself and others here want is just a way for people to post anonymously - just like they can on Tender Support.
that said, i dont know anything more open then allowing anyone from anywhere to post their questions and thoughts to developers, etc. at least it should be an option for the "owner" of the get satisfaction forum for their service - especially if they start it and are paying for it. please?? -
The original question was actually asking about the ability to post privately or anonymously (see the URL for the original title). It was since edited to be simplified, but lost it's reference to "private posting" so I've added that back in. -
Inappropriate?FWIW, you guys are getting flamed on Hacker News for not allowing anonymous comments: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8... Actual article at http://iphone.broadersheet.com/2009/1....

Thanks, Jeff! I'll definitely take a look. -
I think a distinction needs to be made between anonymous feedback and anonymous support requests. All of the comments on both of the links you've suggested are focused on the feedback function. While it may be true that many users are deterred from leaving feedback when login is required, this doesn't necessarily mean we should throw out the requirement for support requests. Support is expensive. For those of us offering free support to our users, is it really too much to ask them to sign in first? Both to help us track them and to make sure they're serious? -
Inappropriate?FWIW, we do now offer several log in options.
We've got Single Sign On (FastPass) available with some of our paid plans which allows companies to pass their users over fairly seamlessly from their web site to their GS community.
But in our free service we now have the ability for users to sign on via Facebook Connect or with their Google or Twitter credentials. There's also OpenID and WindowsLive ID which are login options we've had for quite some time now.
This other topic actually has a more in depth conversation going on that is more specifically about anonymous posting.
