Need to be able to split threads and posts
This top 10 list someone posted isn't the first instance where several requests in one thread, for example there's also a few feature musings. Many people don't seem to grasp the idea of one thread per issue (so that it can be tracked separately). It would be nice if I could go through, snip the part of his post where he asked for a calendar thing, and merge that as a reply to the proper thread. It would also be nice if I could merge the other threads, and I heard merge is coming (about the same time as <acronym title="Duke Nukem Forever">DNF</acronym>), but the ability to split the initial post is good too.
Also, a button to perhaps merge the tags with the users post (I've sent several direct messages to @supereric showing examples, and he's "corrected" them in the worst possible way) their entire question in the tag, and basically a short single sentence in the actual post. I don't know if you can see the history of administrator actions (I'd be very disappointed if you couldn't! blame is very important for trust!) on this post, but he had about 2 paragraphs in the tags box and only one short sentence in the post box. Eric deleted the entire tag instead of pasting them into the question box. That's data loss, his question was deleted! (Apparently the "here's what we found" box thinks this is relevant)
In short: I know you will immediately respond telling me that by trying to organize things, that I'm "putting words in people's mouths" potentially, and that it's better to be in a huge confusing mess than an organized easy to navigate system because therefore it's "as written" instead of "as corrected". That's a good way to convince companies that it's not worth it to claim their accounts here, since they don't get any way to make it easier for customers to keep separate issues separate and the same issue together.
Since we're talking about threads that should be merged, I tried to install Help Center on my server, everything's set up right, I downloaded the compiled version from the admin panel so it should be ok, set up the config (it's actually base.php that has the DB settings, the instructions are wrong in saying config.php does, also chowning it to the webserver is bad, you should chmod it instead), and I get sent to admin-findsite.php and the message
I checked the error.log and I get no PHP errors at all. I'd like some way to debug what's going on here, heh. Using 0.61.
Another side complaint: Why don't posts get updated with progress reports? Shannon's Grand Input was enjoyed by all 6 months ago, but no "we've done this!" replies have been made.

It looks like something went wrong.
Start over at the Help Center Home Page.
Or report this problem to Get Satisfaction.

Inappropriate?Thomas,
config.php get's used to override the settings in boot.php (which I'm assuming you were referring to when you said base.php). It doesn't exist in the pure-source download but gets created when you customize a helpcenter with the auto-configurator tool. That will let you contain your changes to the source entirely in one file, so that you can easily upgrade to a new version.
As for your problem, I'll forward this to ezra, our contractor who works on helpcenter to see if he can help you diagnose the problem.
also chowning it to the webserver is bad, you should chmod it instead
Please elaborate; why is it bad? -
Yes, I meant boot.php, and I'll get a friend of mine to elaborate on the chown situation when he gets back, he's much better at that than I am. -
Inappropriate?Hi Thomas,
I'll assume you were intentionally demonstrating the problem with people including multiple issues in one post by doing so yourself? ;)

To the contrary, we very much want to provide tools to better help organize & manage support requests, ideas, etc. and have had many requests for forking and merging tools. We are definitely considering the best way to solve this problem.
And to address your final question:
"Another side complaint: Why don't posts get updated with progress reports? Shannon's Grand Input was enjoyed by all 6 months ago, but no "we've done this!" replies have been made."
Yes, we recognize that this is an issue. We are currently working on tools that will make it easier to track, find and update topics that need status updating. So the answer is, it's simply just hard to find these posts in any efficient way -- and there are a lot of them.

I base my "words in mouth" comment on this post: http://getsatisfaction.com/getsatisfa... -
Inappropriate?I'm surprised to hear that you're getting the error page without corresponding messages in the web server's error log. It's normally pretty reliable, in sending the error message to the log.
Is it a fresh install? Or have you tinkered with it at all?
Can you check whether there is a database for it to connect to and that you have the DB settings correct?
Barring all that, can you send us some details on your setup—for example, the version of PHP you're using, and any related packages?
Is there a public URL you can point me at that exhibits the behavior? (I doubt I'll discover much, since the error page itself doesn't reveal much, but it may be worth a try.) -
Fresh install, no tinkering, made the database and the user can access it. I'd rather e-mail you the URL for now, but don't know your address. Also, going to bed this second, even though you posted 6 mins ago, so expect a very delayed response. -
Hey Thomas, you can email info[at]getsatisfaction[dot]com. I'll be sure Ezra gets it. -
Inappropriate?Speaking of progress reports...
I've got some people who report having similar (not the exact same) issues across different versions of a product. The problem here is, the issues may seem related, but be completely different. It'd be nice if I didn't have to ask them to start a new thread, and could do so myself. -
Agreed! Topic splitting is on the roadmap.
