Scenario: I'm on the home page. I start entering my question, and elaborating. I click next...
I see the additional "Details" box, and realize I should have put most of my text in the "details" box. I copy paste part of my question from the "ask a question" box to "add some details." I've done this twice now without thinking, and on the third time doing it again, I felt annoyed and then had to copy/paste again. I do this because I understand the concept of the headline and the explanation. But I'm frustrated because I'm writing based on stream of consciousness, but the form elements prevent me from doing this. It interrupts my question.
I'm not sure I have any idea on how to solve this - how will users know that all you want in the top box is the question itself or headline vs. the explanation?
Maybe make the first box one line and have a character limit? instead of showing on a few lines, make it longer?

Inappropriate?Great feedback. This is exactly the kind of thing we're looking for. And I've had the same frustration with this feature without really thinking about it so thanks for speaking up.

Inappropriate?cameron's idea for this, kim, was to have the text from the home page entry end up in the details box, and the page then encourages you to create a title to match the content. something nice and summary-like. do you think that would work, or do you think the fix needs to be bigger than that? anybody else have an opinion?

Inappropriate? The problem with this solution is that it makes it harder to optimize live search for related topics. The other approach is to simply prompt the user to input a short sentence or phrase to describe their topic, then rename the button to something like "Step 2 : Describe your topic"

Inappropriate?I definitely think this could be improved with labeling , but I also think that the size of the first text box indicates a narrative rather than a statement or phrase.

Inappropriate?that is an excellent point. we'll fix!

Inappropriate?Yeah. The challenge is that we want the box to be nice and visible because it's basically where people should start. So how to make it the focal point of the page while making it look more like a text field for a topic title?

Inappropriate? If we can solve this issue, it also alleviates other visual problems with the site, such as the "more topics" box on the right growing to enormous size because we aren't truncating the subject of a topic.

Inappropriate?Happily, the topics page is changing, and there won't be a big more topics box there to cause that problem, even if the titles are super long.

Inappropriate? Why not just limit the input field to something manageable and explain that folks will get a chance to add more details later. If you look at our page you can see why this drives me nuts.
I’m overwhelmed by big type
