what's your business model?
Before we dive in and go further on integrating GS into our site, can you tell us a little about your business model? Are we going to see adverts on our FAQs and Support pages?

hi, luc. as with any startup focused initially on growth and traction, the specific details of how we're going to make money remain to be finalized -- which isn't to suggest that we're without a plan, just that we're still exploring a number of options. that said, here's what i can guarantee you:
1) we're not going to put advertising on your FAQ or support pages.
1a) in general, the advertising model is one we're not too enamoured of, because we think there's more value to be unlocked in our system than we can get from a content aggregation/organic search model.
1b) even if we did do advertising, we won't do it in areas with participating companies. we get about 50% company participation in Get Satisfaction, so that leaves us with a lot of space to . ideally, if that happens, we can leverage that approach into a setup that encourages more company participation overall, which would be a big win for our users.
2) we are most likely going to offer a set of premium services and additional functionality to participating companies for a fee at some point in the future. premium services would be above and beyond what we're already offering on the site, so the basic functionality will remain free for companies and users alike. feature set here, and pricing model, still TBD, but we totally welcome your suggestions.
3) we're releasing our full-access API real soon now, and will probably meter and charge for that, though only for high-volume usage.
4) we know there's a lot of value locked up in the analytics available to companies about their customers based on their use of the Satisfaction system, and that's something we plan to charge for access to. of course, that's in the aggregate that we'd be reporting trends and analysis, not per individual, unless said individual gives explicit permission on a per company basis. we're no Facebook!
5) we've also got some interesting ideas for sponsorships of certain areas of the site, and while i can't get into too much detail here (mostly because those details haven't been worked out), i can guarantee that no one will mistake the approach we're looking at for advertising.
so, that's my of-the-moment answer. happy to follow up on anything you want more detail about -- assuming, of course, that there's more detail to be had! and perhaps one of my co-founders will also jump in with anything i might have missed.

I love your 1b idea, it's like, they don't wanna help you so we'll show ads. But as soon as they sign up, ads go away! It also highlights that the company is definitely not present, because would a company really wanna have ads that could potentially feature their competitors? (On that note, ad idea: "Jaiku is not participating officially, but their competitor Twitter cares about their users and does." -
Hi Lane, I read your of-the-moment answer dated January 2008, have you come up with new ideas since then? And what about the idea 5) can you tell us more about it now?? -
you mean the first round of ideas wasn't enough? :) it's almost all still totally true! we're planning to launch our first round of company tools in the coming month, and our first sponsorship of the site in the same time frame as well.
took a little while to get rolling on the paid services because we were still rolling out changes to the consumer-facing side of the site, but we switching over full speed to company "gardening tools" several months back and are pretty excited to show them off to the world. -
Inappropriate?Hi Lane,
If we're planning to use the API to integrate with our site would it be possible to get some sense of what the charges may be and what high volume usage means?
I’m unsure
-
hi, andre. sorry i missed this the first time around -- i can't say for sure what high volume usage means, but our thinking around the office is that we should charge one price for a 2 person company, and another price for a 20,000 person one, based on activity. API metering will be aimed more towards the 20k company than the 2 person one. what size is your company, and how much use do you think it will get? that might help me answer your question. -
Sorry, but I don't fully understand.
