Gist within Gmail?
Just set up my account yet so I haven't seen the type of information that will be generated, but have you considered actually moving the content and results from Gist to inside the Gmail interface?
My theory is when you are sending or receiving an email is one of the key points in time when more information from the social media space about a person would be useful. There are far too many services trying to pull our attention to different sites, and in reality a service would have to be super-killer to justify the ROI on us spending time away from our work and investing in that service alone. A service that integrates with email would require much less additional attention investment and could be very context sensitive.
Xobni is helping with this somewhat for Outlook users but there's nothing good I know of for Gmail users. Have you considered a Gmail Labs Gadget? Now that gadgets are supported it may be easier to get something cross-browser rather than just something for FireFox users.

Andy,
thanks for the detailed feedback. We have this on the list, but need to make sure we can get access to the message id or header so we can make the right calls. We have this working pretty well in Outlook as a POC for what can be done with Gist content in other mail clients, but I do agree that we want to put Gist data where and when you need it.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Thanks for the quick feedback.
I could be way off the mark here, but if you can see who the email is from/to, would that not give you enough information to provide some relevant info? (I also don't know whether this info is available to gadgets unfortunately).

Inappropriate? At the moment, Gmail gadgets can't access information about the email message(s) being displayed (presumably for security/privacy reasons), but we'll be keeping an eye on developments in this area.

Have you seen what Xoopit are doing with their Facebook Gmail integration. This is exactly what I wanted! http://blog.xoopit.com/2009/02/xoopit... -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the follow up on this. Looking forward to what comes down the pipeline.

Inappropriate?A related idea. The LinkedIn toolbar Infobox functionality was quite useful in terms of pulling in LinkedIn profile info about the email sender, although users seemed to have a problems with it not displaying and it looks like they are not promoting it much at the moment. Hasn't been updated in nearly a year.
