Handling Variations in Company Name
I have a lot of contacts with variations of the same company title. (i.e., Microsoft, Microsoft Inc., MSFT, MS, etc). I think Gist should be intelligent enough to group all those contacts as members of one company.
So, I'd either like to see see Gist provide intelligence into its Company database so that variations are merged on the backend and all these contacts show up when I do a company search. Or, give me the ability to mass edit all these contacts and change the Company name with one edit.

Inappropriate? We do try to recognize alternate versions of company names, but there are many cases that we won't recognize (translating MS to Microsoft is a good example of something we aren't smart enough to do). I haven't seen many companies showing up in our system with their stock ticker in place of their name (MSFT for Microsoft), but it's an interesting idea, so I'll look into it.
When we don't recognize different company names, you can manually merge the companies into a single company by using the "Merge" feature in the "Actions" popup menu on the Companies page.

Inappropriate? The Merge feature allows me to manually handle this, but I guess I'd want the system to be intelligent enough to deal with it. And, particularly, if I merge it once, I'd expect all future cases would be handled automatically. Does that happen today?
Also, it seems like the company names I can search for are limited to just those in my contact list. If I could merge with names from a central database, that seems like a good way to get the community to help you build your database.
As for the stock symbol, I only had one contact that did this so may not be worth your time. If the above issues are addressed, this kind of takes care of itself for most public companies.
I’m thankful
