"shortcuts" and other icons.
It would be good to be able to make more use of the desktop area by adding 'shortcuts' to the different apps, and documents available. Also could be good to have some of the common used sites in the "start" menu.

Inappropriate? Also be able to have folders :) Such thinks are common in windows and a user expects to be able to do such things.
I’m confusing
-
Inappropriate?I agree, I would like to make shortcuts to often used applications or "My Open Places" right on the desktop, or in the start menu.
-
Inappropriate?I agree and shortcuts are definetly in the release que as is other desktop customizations.
But let me open a discussion on an approach that has made me think hard about the real value of shortcuts.
If you tag your apps and places with something contextual you can do the same thing without the clutter and maintenance of shortcuts.
IE tag all your office apps with "office". Then when you go to myOpenPlace just click the "office " tag and all of the apps and places are grouped for you in one window. Because you can tag a place with more than one tage or visa versa this approach to organizing work is very powerful.
I have found this to be way more productive than shortcuts.
Try it and tell me what you think?

While tags are a fantastic tool, and at some point might become standard OS features, right now that's not the case. If you want to appeal to a much broader audience then I'd think that allowing the normal shortcut UI that everyone is familiar with would be a good idea, then add the tagging for those who want a less cluttered environment. -
Inappropriate?Interesting I will give it a try. Although I still think that with the current way things look people will instinctively want to add folders and links. Maybe what you could do is offer both but some how show people the power of the other with tutorials or how to help pages.

Inappropriate?Yeah I think that is a really good idea by the way seems to make things a little smoother. But you can't do that in my safe places. And those are the ones I think I will use more and those are the ones I would like to shortcut to the desktop. Maybe adding grouping features inside of MySafePlace would be a good idea.
