Can Gmail offer an LDAP service so that when I use Apple Mail, I get contact suggestions?
I'd love it if the address completion that I get when using http://mail.google.com/mail in the To: field was available to desktop email applications like Apple's Mail application through LDAP.

Inappropriate? There's apparently an opensource product called "GCalDaemon" that will create an offline copy of your Gmail Calendar, but also give you LDAP access to a local copy of your Gmail address book:
http://gcaldaemon.sourceforge.net/usa...
(It's definitely not simple to install, but people seem to like it once they have.) Here's a LifeHacker overview:
http://lifehacker.com/software/google...
(By the way, I _totally_ second a vote for native LDAP access to Gmail contacts. Seems like a logical, pretty obvious extension after IMAP.) -
Inappropriate?ditto! would love to have thunderbird access my google contacts. (hopefully someday google contacts will be a more rich database as well)
-
Inappropriate? The other direction would also be nice -- ability to add an outside LDAP directory to Gmail (e.g. your university directory). A Google search doesn't seem to suggest this is possible yet. But I guess if one really wants it, one proceeds to write an extension that does just that.

Inappropriate?alexei, excellent idea! You should submit it as a new idea on Get Satisfaction.

Inappropriate?http://code.google.com/p/google-apps-...
Features
synchronizes users from Active Directory or openldap into Google Apps
detects new and exited users automatically and changes Google Apps accounts accordingly
handles user id / account renames automatically
handles attribute updates automatically
keeps track of changes and only propagates deltas (to allow syncing every 10 minutes for example)
Installation
Be sure you have Python 2.4 or later installed.
Download a read only copy of ldap-sync with
svn checkout http://google-apps-for-your-domain-ld... google-apps-for-your-domain-ldap-sync
You can also download the tarball if you prefer.
You must use the python client of the Google Apps provisioning API v1.0. To download a copy use
svn checkout http://google-apps-provisioning-api-c... google-apps-provisioning-api-client
or download the latest provisioning api python client library.
Be sure to set your PYTHONPATH to the root of where the python client library is loaded (there should be a google/appsforyourdomain subfolder below wherever PYTHONPATH points if you've done it correctly).
Finally, download and install the latest python-ldap from sourceforge.

Inappropriate?I'm fully into getting LDAP access to contacts. Funny that in a web 2.0 age we're still looking for the best of Old AND New! Keep my rich clients running, while acting as my hub and default access home.
cheers, nick
I’m hopeful

just so so -
Inappropriate? As of Snow Leopard there's no need for this feature, as we've got out of the box gmail contact sync with no extra requirements( iphone/ipod touch on Leopard ).
I’m happy

Well, that's all well and good for anyone who happens to be using OS X, but there are a lot of reasons why other folks would still really like to have LDAP access. -
Inappropriate?I am very happy with Google, but I noticed that they do not hurry to improve their simple services, there are so many things that are missing, like LDAP and better filter management (at least reorder filters feature). I think It's a shame! They have thousands of top elite coders and they don't do anything to the very basic services, that so many people are using every day!
I’m not sattisfied!
