Getting Error Message: Account exceeded bandwidth limits
I upgraded to Snow Leopard a few days ago, and Apple Mail did some sort of reindexing of my mail. Ever since then, I have been locked out of GMail via IMAP. I get this error message when I try to check my Gmail account using Apple Mail:
The server returned the error: Account exceeded bandwidth limits. (Failure)
It's extremely, extremely frustrating, as I rely on using Apple Mail to do my work. This also means that I can't check my work email on my iPhone.
Does anyone know if this is a known issue, or is there something I can do to stop breaking this Google bandwidth rule?

Inappropriate?Same Problem... read a few other posts from people that are also having the issue. My Issue on my comp and Iphone also started after the snow leopard update.

Inappropriate? If it's any consolation, I have spent a very, very miserable week trying to fix this. I may have fixed it. Fingers crossed. But, I had to trash all of my mailboxes in Apple Mail and start over again. Twice.
One detail that I ended up resorting to: I archived all of my email before March using the GMail archive feature. This prevented Apple Mail from trying to sync all of it, and that may have helped with the bandwidth error. Not sure. This kind of sucks because now I can't search way back into the past via Apple Mail, but for now, I am going to live with this limitation.
I have seen no word from Google on this error. -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem right now. I haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard, but it appears to be triggered by my migration to Postbox which is indexing a massive number of emails. Now that I think about it, the previous times I've had issues were probably Apple Mail redoing its indices as well.
What I can't figure out though is whether this is a conscious decision by Google to limit abuse of its servers, or whether they are resource constrained at times and that's when this condition "flares up".
Anyone hear anything from Google about this?

Inappropriate? This is also an issue for those who use Thunderbird 3.0
Sez Dr_Dan:
"I tracked this down somewhat. I am using Thunderbird 3 beta (e.g. shredder) (TB), but I suspect it is generic. The problem is that TB downloads the folders (labels) repeatedly, (well, you know, that is what imap is supposed to do) and sometimes gets confused about what files it has downloaded (I have set to browse offline) and starts again. Usually it shuts me down if I leave a computer running all night- apparently too much (cough) "bandwidth" from arrogant google to my humble dsl."

Indeed I'm having the problem with Thunderbird 3 Beta 4 -
Inappropriate?Hey, thanks for this extra info. That Dr. Dan in that thread is spot on.
FWIW, I archived everything before March and was able to get it working, but then it popped up again. Locked me out on Thursday and then again on Friday. Very frustrating that no Google people seem to have acknowledged this problem, which appears to be growing. I'm very happy to wait for a fix, if I know one might be coming. Thank you, everyone, for weighing in, and offering other sources of help. Fingers crossed that we can get this figured out. -
Inappropriate?mine started happening over the weekend, I hope this gets resolved soon. I also use Thunderbird 3 Beta4 on Ubuntu, but when I was using Thunderbird it wasn't a problem. It happens on my desktop, I haven't noticed it on my notebook with similar setup.

Inappropriate?Same error here, also due to Snow Leopard upgrade. I am hopeful that it was really just a one-time indexing that caused it - if that's the case then it may disappear when the quotas reset.

Inappropriate?Half of this puzzle: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug...
The other half is that Google is doing a really poor job of handling this -- why is there no warning e-mail sent out that an account is approaching its presumably fairly reasonable (I haven't hit mine until today, after using Google Apps since it debuted) bandwidth limit? -
Inappropriate? For those of you playing the home version:

Note that bug 518702 (ibid) as well as 517466 are fixed in this build. -
Inappropriate?I dont think this is specifically client related as both Thunderbird and Mail.app users are seeing it. I think Google made some recent changes that are exploiting specific IMAP flaws. Either that, or Google bit off more than they can chew enabling IMAP access and are rate-limiting things to avoid another huge outage.
There's a more extensive thread here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p...
The current workaround is to "unlock" the mail block here: https://www.google.com/accounts/Displ...

Inappropriate?I have the same problem. This showed up this morning after I was all day yesterday archiving mail older than 2 years from gmail to local folders using ThunderBird 2.0 (last update .23). I left the computer re-downloading and synchronizing locally the INBOX folder which was >3 GB in size. This morning I saw the error.
I have done the captcha thing like 10 times. I have uploaded to a 10GB account (paid). Nothing seems to be working.

Inappropriate? After more or less 24h the problem is solved. Too much gmail uploading/downloading and prepared to get banned.

Inappropriate? It's listed as a known issue with google right now and they're trying to resolve it.
Clearing out your account or re-adding your mail account will just cause more bandwidth to be used, so I wouldn't recommend it.
"This is a known issue for users of Apple Mail on the Snow Leopard OS. We are working with Apple on a resolution to the issue. In the meantime, there are a few workarounds to reduce the likelihood of hitting the bandwidth limit: "
If you go into gmail support you have the option of reporting it as an issue for your account so they'll hopefully notify you.

Inappropriate? Thanks. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that starting over wasn't the answer, as you note.
I did report it in Google's support section, but I have received no notice from them, sadly. Still happening to me occasionally, although less frequently. Maybe once per day for about a half hour or so. -
Inappropriate? This problem is hitting me too. Seems like Google made some pretty big errors in calculating -- for a paid, "Enterprise, Premier" service... this is just not working.
I’m frustrated.

Inappropriate?Just FYI the problem did not appear to me again. It seems I just caused it after I was rebuilding and redownloading several GB of offline huge email archives.
I use Thunderbird and I have monitored it... there is no unnecessary donwloading of messages.
My guess is that apple mail has a bug on snow leopard that causes constant donwloading of messages and hence, the lockout by Google.
Still, I think that paid customers should be able to at least upload/donwload more frequently.
In any case, with several million customers using Gmail worldwide, each one with several GB mailboxes... some limits have to be imposed for the greater good.

Inappropriate?Be careful if using Thunderbird 3.0 beta 4... I see other related posts with people showing the same problem.

Inappropriate?Fixed in 10.6.2 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3874

Inappropriate?I upgraded to 10.6.2 and it did not solve the problem. From time to time, I am still able to send an email from Apple Mail, but it hasn't downloaded any emails from Google in a week.

Inappropriate? It fixed mine... I disabled my gmail for 2 days to make sure the 24 hour timer had ended. On my computers and phone. May want to try that.
