Gmail is slow to respond and frequently displays a "Still Working" message.
I use Gmail alot and love it. It's normally really responsive and zippy.
However over the last few months it's now really slowed down and frequently displays a "Still Working" message.
This is incredibly frustrating and effectively delays my access to my email. There appear to be lots of other people that have this problem too. http://twitter.com/timeline/home#search?q=gmail+slow

Inappropriate?I have the same problem! After leaving the GMail page up for a while, the "Still Working" message appears and I have to reload the page to view new mail or send mail. I tried to disable all my GMail labs as well, but nothing works.
It has been this way for 2 months now.
Sincerely,
- Oystein Saebo -

Inappropriate?Yup. Reload page to workaround. SELECT AND SAVE any text you have just written BEFORE you do that.
I wonder if this is an intentional security measure Google has added to protect someone who walks away and accidentally leaves their Gmail running. -
Inappropriate?I lose any and all tabs in my browser as well (IE7). First, there's a long delay in "loading" when I try to read an email (usually after I've been on gmail for a while, have bounced around to other tabs, and then return to gmail. After the delay, the whole shebang shuts down- gmail & all other tabs. My homepage is the google search webpage. I wonder if it's all connected somehow.
This has been happening for several weeks.

Inappropriate?Hi!
I use 2 computers: 1 desktop, 1 laptop. Both less than 6 months old, both on XP, use either Firefox or Chrome on both.
Gmail newer version works fine on the desktop but hangs on "send" on laptop bought last month!
Have tried everything I can think of.

24 hours after I posted my frustration the problem suddenly disappeared! Have no idea why or how, but am grateful anyway. -
Inappropriate?I'm really close to switching! I used to use gmail religiously, but now I can't stand it. I can't stand having to wait 5 minutes to send out an email. I can't stand the constant "Still Working..." yellow box. And I can't stand the lack of improvement over the last three months!
I’m extremely frustrated

Inappropriate?Having the same problem - ongoing for 2 - 3 months, but lately it's been getting a lot worse. Just about every email I send out gets the "still working..." and then nothing. What's up with that?

Inappropriate?Yep, been a daily frustration with me for months. Have tryed all suggested solutions. Google Contacts, Reader, Calender, Maps, etc also hang regularly. Firefox 3.5 showing no improvement either.

Inappropriate?I also had the same problem and someone told me to use the "older version" of gmail and that solved my problem. When I go back to the "new version" I have the problem again.

Inappropriate? This only started a week ago, but I'm 'bout ready to throw in the towel. It's getting worse & I can't figure out what to do. HELP ME PLEASE!!

Inappropriate?I was advised to change to the "Old Version" of gmail and that has worked for me.

Inappropriate?I have the same problem, but only in Firefox. When using IE, it works perfectly. When I try to compose emails using Firefox it keeps showing the "still working" message for several minutes and the message is never sent :(

Inappropriate?Hi, I have had exactly the same poor performance for a couple of months when using the Gmail desktop. However, for convenience and speed, I access and send my gmail messages still using Outlook Express v6, reconfigured to get round MSN's dumping the DAV protocol on some pretext, as well as my four other email accounts with Hotmail & Yahoo. Having them all on the same desktop display and easy to manipulate beats Windows Live and Thunderbird hands down.
Still, it is damned frustrating and about time Google got it sorted. Peter

Inappropriate?I have been using Firefox using Gmail and for the past month or so it has been showing me the "still working" but i noticed when i switched to Safari it runs really fast so i have switched browsers. Its kind of annoying to have all my bookmarks on one browser along with passwords and what not and have to switch to a new completely different browser but it has done the job well for me.
I’m content with Safari for now.

I also disabled the Skype extension for Firefox and its working well now! -
Inappropriate?Hi Archmail, Many thanks for your last comments, in particular in identifying the Skype extension as the culprit. Earlier, I had tried reinstalling Firefox, to no effect and I see that your switch to Safari solved your speed problem but with the attendant bookmarks and passwords re-jigging. Anyway, I checked the Skype forum and sure enough, it is a known problem. So, extension binned and Gmail speed in Firefox back to normality. Correspondents on the Skype forum are generally of the view the Skype should fix the bug as soon as possible, to avoid the conflict. Don't hold your breath! Cheers, Peter

Inappropriate?I too have been having this problem every two hours. To make matters worse, Google have removed the option to go to the old GMail ui, which at any rate doesn't work well with the Safari browser anymore.
Come on...!

Inappropriate? If you have Skype extension, disable it and it may work better. It worked for me as someone else suggested it. I dont know why it would cause a problem but it helped a lot!
I’m thankful
