Gmail issues -- don't know the answer to my confidential question

Earlier this week I signed up for a gmail account. Then verified it. But didn't go back and use it right away. Today I can't log in. I thought I knew both my log in name and password, but it is not being recognized. I can't get an email to reset the password, because I don't know the answer to my confidential question. What do I do? I want to keep the log in name I have. I absolutely do not remember answering the confidential question and don't know the answer. So, I keep getting from Google that they can't verify me. I'm befuddled and don't know what to do as it seems I'm in a vicious circle.
