Inappropriate?I too would like an API for Google Groups. Here is my story...
I live on Bainbridge Island near Seattle. We have a volunteer group who helps the parks department build and maintain hiking trails. Here is our web site: www.bainbridgeislandtrails.org. People want to be on the e-mail list but they don't want to have to create an account somewhere. We don't want a discussion list, we just want an e-mail list for announcing when the next trails meeting is and only a handful of people can send e-mails to the list. The web site is currently using Dada Mail for the e-mail list but I am not super happy with the usability of that. I would use an API for Google Groups to allow the web site to subscribe and unsubscribe people from the group without requiring the user to have a Google account.
I’m undecided

Inappropriate?AFAIK there is no groups api at the moment, however there is a feature request for it: http://code.google.com/p/gdata-issues...

Inappropriate?you dont need an account to subscribe, they can just email the subscribe address, or you can put a subscribe box on your site, in the settings > general "Get a promotion box for your website"

Inappropriate? You should really check out Wiggio. Simple group site with an open architecture that allows you to control what people can do what actions. The text messaging feature may be particularly useful for a group like yours. If you are really determined, I've heard you can get an xml feed from Google groups and write some code to parse and redistibrute to your email list.

Inappropriate?I'd love to see OAuth-mediated acess to some fairly simple things, like the list of groups a user is in, groups they're active in, and for groups and users that want to expose it, the group membership. This would be useful for rapidly building a user profile of someone, knowing only their group memberships...

Inappropriate?Ideally, they should add OpenSocial gadget support to groups, so that groups becomes an OpenSocial container, just like they have done with iGoogle, GMail, and Calendar. That would allow you to access your members, and other group data.
