Opera browser support in Docs, Wiki, Gmail and others
From time to time I'm forced into switching for different browser instead of my favorite – Opera. Frequent message saying “You browser is currently not supported” is very annoying. This are most common on Wiki and Docs, but Gmail is Opera crippled as well.
And each time I see it, I, myself as a developer, understand reasons behind it. Yes it is FF that has all set of plug-ins and in fact became a developer tool rather than a browser. But this is still not a reason to provide less support to the best browser available. I'm not here to argue why I've stated Opera the best, yes I know that it has a lot of problems (I've mentioned that I'm a developer :)). But the painful aspect is that I can't notice the movement.
Guys, I really like products of your company, but it is so disappointing when you can't get all from products you like on the browser that you favor so much!
Thanks, for you attention.
Denis

Inappropriate?Hi Dennis,
I'm also an Opera user, and I spend a lot of my time here at Google trying to address Opera compatibility issues. Here's some of the progress that we have made on the services you mentioned:
* Editing pages on Google Sites doesn't work very well in Opera. For example, it is impossible to apply toolbar commands to selected text. The good news is that a fix for this, and several other issues, is currently in the pipeline.
* Opera 9.5 fixed a lot of issues that affected Google Docs. There are still some issues remaining, but the most annoying bugs (such as long lines not wrapping) have been fixed. If you haven't upgraded to 9.5 yet, be sure to do so!
* Gmail currently serves the "old version" UI to Opera and IE6. The old version is missing a lot of nice features from the "new version" UI, such as faster performance and colored labels. We've been working on making the new version work better in Opera. You can try it out by going to http://mail.google.com/?nocheckbrowser (but it might not work perfectly).
The main roadblock to Opera support at Google is Opera's low market share (about 0.7% according to Net Applications). Firefox and IE get a lot more support because many more people use them. So, tell your friends to switch to the Opera browser and Google services :-)
Also, if you are good at Javascript, why not take matters into your own hands? http://www.google.com/jobs ;-)
I’m using Opera

Inappropriate?Hi David,
Well I think pretty high of myslef as JS developer :)
But I myself, do not provide much attention for compatibility with Opera browser, well, as you just mentioned it is low market share :) And only 9.5 introduced developer tools, so now Opera has a chanse to earn some credit being dev's browser.
But isn't Goggle a big company enough to provide that? :) It's not one man war as of me with projects I'm involved in :)
Thanks for you comment, I'll try out tips that you posted, this colored labels is one of the features I miss a lot :)
I’m glad to hear you care
-
Inappropriate?Status update!
Gmail's new version is currently being rolled out to Opera users. So, you should have access to new features (such as colored labels) now or really soon :-)
I’m using Gmail in Opera
-
Inappropriate?@David, thanks a lot for taking the time to post here and I hope Google will start spending more money on Opera compability.
Gmail's new version does not work for my opera browser / opera worked so well before with gmail (only since 9.5) but now it is broken (for me)
I’m frustrated
-
What doesn't work? Does it not load, or does a specific feature not work? -
Inappropriate?Hi David, thanks a lot for asking. I feel a little bit special now. Gmail does not load at all. I have attached a screenshot. It will load in in basic HTML.
I’m happy that David cares

Preferences -> Advanced -> Content -> Blocked Content
Make sure that "about:blank" is not blocked. Unblocking it should cause Gmail to work again.
about:blank shouldn't be blockable, so this is an Opera bug. Opera is going to fix this in 9.52. -
Inappropriate?wow thanks a lot that did the job. really happy thanks for an outstanding support.
now i have one more problem in the updated version of gmail makes one more problem... if i click on an email
instead of the email opening i get the right click option box (but i am not right clicking only trying to open the email.
i use a regular lenovo windows box....

Try single-clicking instead of double-clicking?
Does this affect http://mail.google.com/?ui=1 too? -
Inappropriate?single clicking and double clicking do the same. but http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1 works fine for me. i will bookmark this url now and use it in future. thanks a lot!!!!
I’m happy as i did not want to give up Opera or Gmail :)
1 person says
this solves the problem

It might help to go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Toolbars
Then, uncheck "Double-click text to display context menu"
This option is on by default and normally doesn't cause problems, but I think turning it off might help in your case. -
Inappropriate? That's not just a question of an overall market share. For example, here in Ukraine and in Russia Opera browser has more than 15-20 per cent of the market share. So it's like you're not fully supporting 15-20% of customers from these countries.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Hey David, I am back supporting this thread as I am a little frustrated that the google docs still dont work. You helped me with the gmail problem. any idea when Google will fully suport google docs?
-
Hi Andre,
Text documents in Google Docs should already work in Opera, and spreadsheet support is coming soon. Presentation support will be a little bit tricker, because there are some bugs in Opera that we need to work around. We do let Opera users view embedded presentations now, though. -
thanks for the update David -
Inappropriate?Hey, it's a year further on, and Gmail and Google Docs still don't work well with Opera. I'm talking about disappearing paragraph breaks in both applications, which renders emails and documents alike pretty well messed up. It isn't exactly rocket science to produce an online rich text editor which will work on any browser, so I can only conclude that it's either pure incompetence on Google's part. If I was paranoid, I'd quite believe it was some kind of bizarre effort to target Opera users, but that would be just plain nuts... or would it!?
I’m sad

> It isn't exactly rocket science to produce an online rich text editor which will work on any browser
Rocket science is probably a lot easier, actually. Trust me, I speak from experience :-)
The Opera issue you're describing is an Opera bug that they fixed in Opera 10. If you're feeling adventurous, try an Opera 10 snapshot from http://my.opera.com/desktopteam -- the bug should be fixed in that!
Another workaround is to type a space in every empty line, or use shift+enter to create new lines. -
Inappropriate?hey!! when i go go google and click on gmail it says this: You tried to access the address http://mail.google.com/mail/?hl=en&ta... which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.
Make sure your Internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working. so plz tell me what i can do thx!! -

Inappropriate?@David Bloom:
The "disappearing paragraph break" bug is most definitely NOT an Opera bug, since it only appeared a couple of months back; it is in fact Google's code that is broken. I hardly know what to think: whether it's incompetency on the part of Google's code hacks, or a deliberate attempt to dissuade people from using what Google perceives as a competitor to their own minority browser, ie Chrome. This has happened previously: a Google update breaks something, Opera fixes their code to counter it, and Google responds by breaking some other item of functionality, and then it all begins again. BTW, Opera usage in Europe is greater than Safari and Chrome combined. -
Alvero, you'll find the same problem in Yahoo Mail. It's an Opera bug -- really :-)
You didn't notice the problem before in Gmail because of another bug (since fixed) that caused Gmail to insert paragraph breaks instead of line breaks in Opera, which caused a lot of extra whitespace between lines. This meant that you probably never needed to press [enter] multiple times to begin with, which masked the underlying problem.
