Storage Space: Picasa Web & Gmail
I have a hard time understanding the logic used by Google when they decided to give GMail users >7G of email space, and Picasa Web users only 1G.
My calculations show that the average size of email ~30K, and the average size of photo ~3M. - Size may vary depending on usage. - Currently, I'm using 5% of my space on GMail, and 30% on Picasa web (just removed a bunch of stuff).
I think it's silly to see so much space gone to waste. Why not combine the storage for GMail, Picasa, GDocs, and even GDrive/platypus (if you ever release it) into a single storage group? Start off with x "unified storage space" and then offer upgrades, like you currently do for Picasa that way you don't lose that avenue for revenue.

Not if the existing gmail & picasa web albums space was shared... eg 7GB in Gmail, 1GB in picasa web, 8GB in total for mail, and pics. They could even extend it to google docs to and have a "google" storage limit, not a gmail, picasa, docs etc storage limits.

Inappropriate?Very good idea.
For a short time, Picasa Web Albums did the same thing as Gmail... it said "Storage space is 1GB and counting...." However the and counting bit never actually started to happen :( -
Inappropriate?i will mention that i know google does rent out its data center space to 3rd parties for profit. so if that revenue helps them improve their products in other ways even faster and improve my life and yours in other innovative ways...this is an understandable aspect of their products that has not happend yet or soon.

I don't get what google renting out its data centre space has to do with the limited (and not expanding) space in Picasa Web Albums? Am I missing the point? -
Inappropriate?well they are focusing their efforts currently on trying to expand their browswer and mobile platforms. if they were to expand their picasa webalbums, which may not be a huge part of google apps yet, they would have to do it for everyone. this would dramatically decrease the amount of space they would have to rent out.

Inappropriate?Google gives us 7gb of gmail because its not expecting us to actually use it.Lets face it tel me 10 people you know that gave 7gb of mails .But anyone can gave 7gb of pictures.
I’m frustrated

Right. The limit for GMail is 7GB, but actually, almost no one is using this much space. And Google does not reserve this much space for every user, of course, so the space is not wasted - it's just not used/allocated. It's clever advertising. -
I do not think it is the fact that people do not use all the allocated space for GMail (l am using 15%), but the fact that this content will not be accessed nearly as frequently as photographs will. Storage costs much less to Google than bandwidth, especially due to the fact that the company uses clusters of Linux servers in place of the larger conventional servers. -
Inappropriate? Also it would then be possible, without somebody noticing, that they may post too many pictures and suddenly be unable to receive anymore email messages. They only way to stop this is to set a limit that leaves space at either end. Ideally they should let us specify how much is dedicated to each service.
