Why doesn't google obey my meta noindex tags?

We've been getting some spam recently. Due to our patent-pending SEO techniques (:p), the spam on our site is getting pretty high up in google's index. We don't want that. One way we've helped to deal with this particular kind of spam is to add noindex, nofollow meta tags to these pages.

It seems like google is ignoring these tags. The actual code we are using:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">

Does that look right? Does the space between noindex, nofollow make a difference? should I use "none" for the content instead? Is there anything else I should do?

happy I’m thankful for any help, in advance.
