Filter feeds items
I want to be able to define simple filters for RSS feeds.
Lets say I don't want items which title contains "[Dealhacker]" for the blog lifehacker.com.
I want to be able to define a filter which would be : "All items except items containing the text '[Dealhacker]' in the title".
Just as Outlook does with its filters for mail.

The company has this under consideration.
The best point from the company

You're spot on that things like canonicalization (so you don't have to worry about whether you're subscribed to the atom feed or the RSS feed, or the feedrinse feed...) and filtering would be really huge for us to have. I personally would love to have them as well - I mean who *really* needs to read all of engadget every day?
Unfortunately, the Reader team is very small and this would be a fairly large undertaking, so we've got to balance our time. We all experience the same problems as you, so we definitely want to see something like this too.
Sorry I can't be of more help, but thanks again for the feedback! We appreciate it.

Inappropriate? This is really such a crucial thing that Google Reader needs.
I’m snowed under by topics I have no interest in

Inappropriate?Really hope the Reader team is working on something like this.

Inappropriate?I dream of a day when Reader gains filters like Gmail. It would be fantastically awesome to be able to filter out certain things from my feeds—the equivalent of having them "skip the inbox" for example.
Reader is a powerful tool to optimize attention. Filters would make it more so.

Add Gmail-like filters to Reader. -
Inappropriate? In the meantime, http://feedrinse.com should do the trick for you.

Inappropriate?@Brian True enough, though I use Yahoo! Pipes to mix and filter my feeds. Neither Feedrinse nor Pipes can't act on stuff I've already received. Not to mention that doing this makes the "like" feature dramatically less useful, as I'm no longer part of the mass of people subscribed to the canonical feed (more on that at the end).
Not being able to edit a subscribed feed's URL, complicates this. Until I've subscribed to a feed for some time, I probably don't know what I'd like to filter, so unless I run ALL my feeds through Feedrinse/Pipes, I have to unsubscribe, filter it through the 3rd party, and then resubscribe, which loses my history in Reader (and is terribly inconvenient).
As I mentioned above, this is a good example of the point I made in the Google Group when social features were announced, namely that the social object is NOT the feed item, but the feed item's link URL. If the social features pivoted around the LINK element, it would solve this problem.
I don't mean to rant, it just seems that several of my GR issues seem to be involved in this. :)
I’m frustrated
-
Couldn't explain the frustration involved with a third party doing the filtering better !
I would also add that those feeds (coming from a third party) would be updated less frequently (as GR feeds updates are correlated with the number of subscribers).
Finally many third partys will probably disapear, meaning I'll loose my precious feeds if I forgot to do a backup. It's too much hassle then because I'll have to plan an other backup. -
Both of those are excellent points—we are of like mind! -

Looking forward to a future in which these features are realized! Until then, if I can help in any way, please let me know.
