followers can only add comments to a commented item.
in GR most of my followers that are added on a commenting group dont have the ability to comment on an item if i did not comment. the silly workaround that im using now is to place a dummy comment on every item i share

Inappropriate?This shouldn't be happening. Are only some followers in the sharing group experiencing this problem, or is everyone in the group unable to comment unless you comment? Also, are you sure you've shared the post first?

some are allowed to add a comment even if the items are not commented before. the majority is experiencing it. are you experiancing it?. you are already on my coworkers group that has commenting ability. my shared items ar at http://www.google.com/reader/view/#st.../user%2F06209096757327730374%2Fstate%2Fcom.google%2Fbroadcast
yes im sure the items are shared.
btw the problem is not just on my account. im also noticing that i cant comment on some items of some users -

but that's still too weird invite some guys you don't really know

Inappropriate?Weird, this only seen to happen for some people. I am following almohssensami (Sami) and he has to add a comment for me to comment on his shares.
However, I am also following Kaveh Yazdifard and he doesn't need to add a comment for me to comment. I've added two pics (one from Sami's shares and the other from Kaveh's share). In both share they did not add a comment.

Inappropriate?We looked into it and were able to reproduce it for some users / friends, so it's definitely a real bug. I don't have an update at the moment for a fix, but we're working on it.

i started putting dummy comments two weeks ago but that was messing everyones comment view. so i had to stop. is there another work around for this -
Inappropriate?We've been looking into this some - we don't have a fix yet, but it appears to possibly be related to having duplicate contacts. For any person that this seems to be happening to, try going to http://google.com/contacts and making sure you don't have multiple entries for that person. Some of them may be unnamed but share the same email address, so be sure to search for email addresses.1 Comment Add a comment

Heh. Great. Did you know that another current bug is that whenever you add a follower in Reader it creates duplicate contacts? I have hundreds of those orphan unnamed contacts floating around.

Inappropriate?i do in fact have many duplicates (about 800:) ). any easy way to remive them. and as chuck says, the duplicates love creating themselves (and i thought it was because of the cyanogen ROM on my G1)

i deleted 1200-1300 (unnamed contacts) from my coworkers list. but when i went back to to the list of followers so i can manually re-add them its showing only240 users of the 730+ that used to show in that list.
is there an easy way to get the full list of the missing 500 users that i deleted up in the process. is there a way to undelete the 1300 (so i can just wait for a proper fix) -
Inappropriate?i can confirm that this did not solve the problem. i just checked with two people after i deleted the 1200+ (unknown contacts) and they confirmed that they still dont have the ability to comment on a non-commented items

Inappropriate?Yeah I tried the 'delete phantom contacts' idea several weeks ago. No change. I can't comment unless the person I'm following comments first.
It seems to me that Google isn't really concentrating on GReader at the moment. If they're serious about using GReader for social feeds they had better get this fixed soon as it's not good for much other than READING at the moment!

Apparently, Brian, this issue hasn't been given much importance because of the small number of greader users who use this aspect of greader. Let me reassure you however that they are a bunch of early adopter types (some disappointed by FriendFeed acquisition by Facebook) who have discussed bugs like this many times already and have suggestions that could make this entire issue "disappear." Since Google Contacts is in BETA it's hard to know if this is a "moving target" problem, or not. Thank you for your attention.
