google reader should let me keep old items unread!
google reader marks all items as read automatically after 30 days whether i want it or not - and there are some feeds i want to be able to read all items of even if i take longer than a month to do so!
automatically marking all items as read after a month might be considered a feature by some, but it is a showstopper for others, so why make it the only way? why not let users decide to not use this "feature" on a feed-to-feed basis?
this might be considered a feature request, but since it's a showstopper regarding certain types of feeds, and since it was not so before, i think it's a problem...

Hi ingvald,
Unfortunately, this has been a common complaint on our official Help Group for some time. Marking all items as read or "not new" after 30 days is as much a feature as it is a logistical consideration to keep Google Reader running smoothly for everyone. At this time, keeping track of all unread items all-time is just not feasible. This doesn't mean that we don't hear your concern and that we aren't always thinking of ways we can change this behavior for the better. Thanks for helping making Reader better-
I’m disappointed I can't be of more help.

hi Nick,
thanks for your answer.
i can see the logistical argument. but could you at least consider the option to increase the time to 180 days (or at least 90) for a feed?
items that have not been read in half a year can safely be said to have aged into "the archive", for any kind of feed or user. the same can't be said of the 30 day limit.
combined with a sensible default (that google thinks is 30 days), this should not cause much extra load on your servers, i think.

Nick, is this fact (that unread items are automatically marked as read after 30 days) documented in the Google Reader Help somewhere? If not, can you please add it? Thanks -
Inappropriate?Hi,
It bothers me a lot. I go on vacation and then lose the thread, because half the items are gone. Please add this to the settings. This should not be too difficult, right? 30/60/180/never to choose for me is very important. Feel free to let the 30 days by default, but I need "never". Thanks

Inappropriate?I have just realized what happened to some of my unread feeds! This feature should be changed, for sure.

Inappropriate?I come from Bloglines, where they limit the nr of unread items to 200 (at least they used to, haven't checked lately).
I felt that was a more natural choice. Fast-moving blogs or searchfeeds hit the 200 limit rather quickly. But that's OK, because most of the time it's timely information (so value decreases quickly with age).
However, there was a long tail of valuable feeds (mostly sporadically updated blogs) that I didn't want to miss any updates of - yet that didn't contain really urgent info. No problem here to stay under the 200 limit, even if you only caught up months later.
I don't say the Bloglines system is better for everyone - I would already be happy if the automatic expiry date was configurable in Reader.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I have been using newsgator account with NetNewsWire for ages, but unfortunately they discontinued their feed sync service this September and suggest their users to switch to Google Reader, which I did.
Since then, the issue with marking unread items as read is the greatest disappointment for me. Having items limit per feed, suggested by other users above, would definitely make much more sense.
