People added to groups to allow commenting in Google Reader, do not always remain in groups...
To allow people to comment on your shared content in Google Reader you must add anyone who follows you to a group which is allowed to comment.
The problem is that after adding people to a group they do not always remain there. Often after logging out, changing sharing options or following a new person, people who have previously been placed in a group do not remain there. Next to their name it gives you the option to 'Add to a group' even though you have already done this.

Inappropriate? When you follow people, they sometimes are added to your google contacts, sometimes they are not. Just adding info. Not sure if its related.
-
Inappropriate?A temporary work around for this is:
Click on 'Sharing Settings' and then near the top it will say 'X people are following you', click that and a small pop-up style window will appear. Inside that window find anyone that has 'Add to a group' next to their name and click 'Unfollow' then you will have the option to follow that person again (in the same place in the list), so click 'Follow' and then 'Add to a group' and all is now well. :)
I’m still optimistic
-
Inappropriate?Does that work? As in, do they stay added to the group?
-
yes -
Inappropriate?Yes so far (after multiple refreshes and new follows etc) they have stayed in their groups
-
Inappropriate?Another piece of info, at least in my case, on the sharing settings page for GReader it only shows a portion of the folks I've put into the list, however, when I click through to the Google Contacts and check the settings for that group, they're all there. Could this be a break down in communications/API between Contacts and Reader?
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, it's looking like Functionally, they are in the group (as Pete says, they're there in Google Contacts, and can comment on my shares), but they are not being displayed as such in Reader. That's a much less troubling issue, but it'd still be nice to have it fixed so it's clear who has or has not been put in groups.
I’m not so worried about it anymore.
-
Inappropriate?I have a different workaround, and you know what.. its more cumbersome than the one above. HOWEVER< if you are really anal about your gContacts (GC) address book it can help!
First things first. If someone follows you, then in gReader (GR) then it adds there email address to GC. If you follow someone in GR, then it adds an 'unnamed contact'.
I worked out in my own 'People you follow' wy GR kept dropping the groups. Its because I had them stored twice in GC. I wanted to fix it and added them in myself to GC. This creates a double entry.
If you look at the bottom of your GC you will have lots of 'unnamed contacts' with a link to a google profile. This profile is a number only, but if you cut n paste, it takes you to a name. Simply edit the name, merge the two if they are already in GC, then check the groups. It works...... bit of a balls ache but it works. Also, this is a bit cumbersome for the +100 people
I’m really parnickity ;)

Thx, I saw this before but did not fully get it. This way will be able to make even people who are not following you stick in groups. The other way only works if the person is also following you. -
Inappropriate?Hi all- When you add contacts to groups in Reader, they will appear in that contact group in Gmail, but will not appear in your list in Reader if they haven't shared any items recently. We do this to streamline the list so it's easier to go through the people that are actively sharing and reading your shared items.
-
sounds like it's your list, not my list. I'd like to keep track in Reader and be able to depend on what I see in the list. -
jez..: did that, but those without emails in the entry keep popping out as If i were not following them -
That's not the issue, tho, Jenna. It's that when you bring up the list of people you're following in Reader, it shows most of them as not having been added to a group in contacts (and thus, it appears, not able to comment on your items) even if you have in fact added them. I'll upload a screenshot. -
Not sure I agree with that design. It's just confusing. Let me decide who I want to read. If I add someone to a Group, oddly enough, I expect them to be listed as a member of that group. If you've optimized them away and killed them, don't call it 'My Group', please call it 'My Group (recently active)' -
Thanks for the feedback everyone. We are chatting about other design revisions and will take this into consideration. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the screenshot and the clarification. We are investigating.
-
Inappropriate?OK - in an effort to help Google out and preserve my own sanity, I am recording my test cases here.
1) Created a group called 'GR-Followers'
2) Create a group called 'GR-Friends'.
A totally new contact appears out of the blue and starts 'Following' you. He is not known to you, GReader, GMail or Google Contacts at all.
Let's call this chap - Chris
You click 'Add to Group after 'New followers (1)These people are now following your shared items.' and not the second option 'New people want to share with you (1)'
You click 'Add to GR-Followers'. GR responds with 'Added to GR-Followers'.
Flip to Google Contacts. Search for 'Chris'
Chris is listed as 'Other Contacts' and a member of 'GR-Followers'.
Select the group #'GR-Followers' in Google Contacts. Chris is listed there.
OK - so where's the bug report. There isn't one. Everything works as expected for this scenario.
I will continue to track the life of 'Chris' in subsequent updates.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?GReader now offers
'New people want to share with you (1)These people want to share items and comments with you.'
so you preview his Shared Items, decide it's interesting and Follow him back.
GR reports: 'You are now subscribed to Chris' Shared Items'
Click 'Edit Groups'. GR correctly reports Chris as a member of 'GR-Followers'.
Click 'Add to GR-Friends'. GR correctly reports 'Added Chris to GR-Friends'.
Refresh Google Contacts - Chris is correctly listed in both groups 'GR-Friends' and 'GR-Followers'.
Still no bug. Everything all in its place (Radiohead).
Quite dull this, isn't it ? But believe me, it is hurting me more than it is hurting you. -
Inappropriate? You have another friend - a real early adopter. He was using GR before Louis Gray. let's call him 'Damond'.
Now Damond has been around since Adam and Eve and has been added, re-added, dropped, added, dropped, re-added to both 'GR-Followers' and 'GR-Friends', he doesn't know where he is.
Google Contacts correctly ists 'Damond' in both 'GR-Friends' and 'GR-Followers' group.
Click 'Sharing Settings' in GR.
Click '79 People are following you'. Examine popup carefully. Search for 'Damond'.
'Damond' is listed as 'Add to Grouip'.
Click 'Add to Group'. You get the option to add him to 'GR-Friends' and 'GR-Followers' even though Google Contacts claims he is already a member of both groups.
Check that 'Damond' is listed under 'Friends'. He is but is greyed out. His last shared item was 'Aug 25, 2009 (2 days ago)'.
You lie awake at night wondering whether Damond can indeed comment on your Shared Items. -
you and me both....you and me both... -
Inappropriate? You're determined to get to the bottom of this.
You delete Damond from Google Contacts.
You click 'Unfollow' in GR.
You click 'Follow' in GR.
You click 'Add to group', select add to 'GR-Followers' and click 'Done' to ensure these changes stick forever and Damond is released from GR purgatory hell.
You check GC - Damons is now in 'GR-Followers'.
You add Damond to 'GR-Friends'.
You check GC - Damons is now in 'GR-Friends.
You check Damond appears in the 'You are following' list.
He does.
You sit and wait. You see a large wooden door to the east. -
Inappropriate?Another test case that I haven't tried would be when the contact is already known to Google Contacts either with the same email or an alias.
-
There is already a time consuming way to FINALLY fix all. Just go look at jez arnold's response above. The one I responded to. It will fix all your probems. -
That's a long winded, time consuming solution. I am merely trying to give the GR team additional information and test cases.
To fix it properly. -

I agree with you Andy.. the way I did it is far too time consuming... and also like I said, you gotta be on top of your gContacts.
if "My Contacts" does not equal "All Contacts" then I start getting a little panicked!!
I am sure that Jenna, and the gReader team are looking into this especially with how popular it has been getting recently. -
Inappropriate?Hi Andy- We are currently looking into this issue, and appreciate your (very) detailed documentation. We will update this thread when we learn more.
-
It's so great that you and Mihai have been so responsive, Jenna. Thanks for looking into it. -
Inappropriate? We've pushed a fix for at least one cause of such problems. A refresh should pick up the change, ideally people you've added to groups in that past but which didn't "stick" should now be displayed as being those groups. It would be great to know if this fixes the problem or if you're still experiencing it.
-
I'm afraid the problem persists. Everyone I've added to groups in the past, and everyone I'm newly adding to groups still don't appear as being added. -
Inappropriate?Afraid it didn't fix anything for me. Played around a bit and noticed the following:
- In Reader, it says the group I'm sharing with has 44 contacts. In Google Contacts, it says the same group has 103 contacts. 103 is also the number of people following me in Reader.
- There seem to be two contacts cards in Google Contacts for each person in Reader I've added to the group: one that Only has that person's email address (no name, etc.), and another that Only has that person's shared items URL (again, no name, etc. )
- I identified a pair of contact cards for the same person, filled in the name on both, and merged them. The reported number of contacts in that group went up in Reader from 43 to 44, and that person is now sticks in the group.
My hunch is that you'll fix this issue so that it doesn't happen going forward, but I'll set aside some time this weekend to manually fixing the ones already in there. -
Where you said, "and another that Only has that person's shared items URL", correction it shows their google profile URL. -

Inappropriate? You're right, Ru. I misspoke. It's the profile URL.
-
Inappropriate?More info: a new person started following me today. I added him to the group I'm sharing with and followed him back. He seems to have "stuck" in the contact group, so that seems to be improvement!
In GContacts, he has an email-address-only contact card. Not sure if he also has a profile-URL-only contact card; I didn't have the patience to check through all of them.
1 person says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate? Thanks everyone for the additional details, we're making progress on fixing this problem for good.
The company says
this solves the problem
-
We've pushed out a fix so that editing of both email-only contacts and profile URL-only contacts should work (and in general should lead to fewer duplicate contacts). Unfortunately this won't fix edits previously made, but it will ensure that all future edits stick. -
Inappropriate?it would be nice if you explained what those of us with the problem are supposed to do. Delete all contacts and start over?
how about a program that goes in an applies the fixes, for those who choose it? I still lose people I have followed. i logged out, and back in to check it.
I’m uber frustrated
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the work on this, Mihai. I'll keep an eye on how things are working going forward.
Bob, I think the answer is in Jez Arnold's comment above: "If you look at the bottom of your GC you will have lots of 'unnamed contacts' with a link to a google profile. This profile is a number only, but if you cut n paste, it takes you to a name. Simply edit the name, merge the two if they are already in GC, then check the groups. right, did that ages ago. fixed some problems. still have several that won't stick. avi joeseph for instance. didn't even change when he added an email. (at first I thought only those contacts w/o email caused problem) -
just give me a "resync contacts and reader" button -
It looks like if I go into the list of people I'm following (or that are following me) in Reader and click on "add to group," they now stay in the group.
If that persists, the solution is as simple as re-adding each contact to a sharing group. Not as simple as a "resync contacts" button, but much simpler than manually de-duping in GContacts.
The big pile of Unnamed Contacts remains in Contacts, but perhaps those can just be deleted? -
Inappropriate?Okay, so using the "add to group" link now works, and everyone I'm following is "sticking" in my sharing group, both in Contacts and in Reader. In Contacts, both the email address listing and the profile url listing show up as in the sharing group.
Oddly, adding all these folks I'm following to groups increased the number of folks following me by a couple dozen. Do they only count as following me if I've put them in a group? That seems odd, but not that big a deal.
I'd say this Nearly solves the issue. What remains somewhat annoying is dozens of "(Unnamed Contact)"'s in Contacts. Ignorable for the most part, but they do clutter up my mobile contacts list (I use an Android phone that's synced with my Google Contacts).
Is it safe to simple delete all the Unnamed Contacts in Contacts, or will that mess something up in Reader?
