Categories and subcategories should be cached - not downloaded on every spot creation
When creating a spot, the list of categories / subcategories is reloaded from the internet every time you choose the category button even if you have only just opened it and closed it.
To my mind, the categories / subcategories should be cached in the iPhone user data - when the app launches, it could check to see if more than 24 hours (or 12 hours, whatever) has passed since it was last updated. If it has, then it should connect to the internet and see if the categories / subcategories are different (by means of some sort of encrypted hash so the data download would be around 32 bytes) - if it's different, then you've added or renamed categories so it should update them.
This would save your bandwidth, reduce data roaming costs for those Gowalla creators abroad, and speed up spot creation as there is nothing worse than creating a spot and then having it hang for 8 seconds whilst it reloads a list it only loaded 2 minutes ago when you were creating a spot around the corner!
Thanks,
Ben

Inappropriate?Funny, I asked this Q on twitter today, was curious which app was taking so much bandwidth, now I know :(
The suggestion is sound, make the Categories cacheable in the next version.
I’m frustrated
