Friend-Only Spots
What if I could create a spot that only my friends could see? I'd like to do this so I could share important places with people who matter to me, but not everyone. Who else would like something like this?

The map location would be hidden. In fact, the spot wouldn't even show up in the Spots list for non-friends.

I would say that private or friend-only spots should never award a checkin with an item, just to keep things fair.

Just to add my vote, this would be a great idea. The "my house" application is the most obvious. Friends would know when I was home, and where home even is, but no one else would.

Inappropriate?Honestly? I'm not sure if I like it or not. Can you give us an example of a spot you'd want only your friends to check in at?
I’m curious, too!
-
Surely Josh, you'd want everybody to know where your house is... -
Say I have an item I'm carrying and I want to leave it somewhere (hide it, almost) where only my friends can get it. A friend-only spot would allow me to do this.
Todd — I have no idea what you're talking about. :P -
Jokes aside, I like this idea.
Just thought of a good use for it, other than sharing with friends. A temporary friend-only spot might be a good way to automate a tutorial of the game. When a user does the tutorial, the system can generate a quick spot right were the user is (that only they can see). Put an icon there, go through the mechanics of founding and swapping. That way, you can teach them the game by having them play it and not have the problem of sending them to the closest spot, because you'll always control where that is.
You know, make 'em earn that "In installed Gowalla" pin! -
Inappropriate? This idea intrigues me... I think, however, if it could be partially viewed (say via stamp on one's passport) but not the map location by those "uninvited" could be very fun.
I’m intrigued

Inappropriate?I like the idea of a secret spot wherein friends could swap icons. That would be a good use of it... I've already dropped icons for friends to pick up hoping that someone else didn't get to them first.
I’m warming up to the idea.
-
Inappropriate?I like the idea too, although I'm currently lacking nearby Gowallaers to hide stuff for anyway... sniff.
I really like Todd's idea of the tutorial as well! -
Inappropriate?Really could have used something like this recently!! :) Any plans to go forward with it?
-
No plan yet to move forward with this one. I like the idea, but technically there are some other things we need to bite off first. -

That's a good idea, especially after reading the Scoble blog, it never occurred to me that people would check in as a signal to let others know that hey, I'm around if you want to hang out, etc...since I don't play foursquare, but it seems like that would meet those type of players' needs. -
Irene, the "hey, here I am" signal is similar to something I just posted as a new idea regarding short-term spots to let friends no where you are at events. Check it out here: http://getsatisfaction.com/gowalla/to... -

Gee... I don't think that scenario EVER comes up! :o)
I’m giddy

Oh I laughed heartily upon reading this :) You and I definitely need a secret spot!! -
I like this idea for communicating with friends, but I don't like it for purposes of playing the core Gowalla game. If you can hide items, etc. for friends, then you can use your inner circle to help folks achieve items more easily. I think it puts everyone on a fair playing field by making folks create public spots, check-in to public spots, and otherwise travel around to public spots to get items. -
Inappropriate? It would be fun to mark more personal things like "where Mike proposed to Adeline" in a park or "my Dad's office" at a university (oh, and you need a generic university category, BTW) but I'm not sure I want them to be private.
On the other hand I absolutely love the "Stephanie has checked in at home" idea.
I’m undecided

The more I think about this idea the more I like it. -
Inappropriate?I'm a huge fan of this idea. You could use it for checking into a party, or a wedding or some other social function that has a limited audience.
You could also use it as a team gathering spot, or a circle of friends that has a meaningful place that is otherwise ordinary. An example would be my weekly gaming spot - not interesting to anyone else but my crew.
Setting these as friend only spots would make them personal without taking up a spot that other people would find seemingly random.
I’m a big fan

Inappropriate?PS: for anyone wanting personal spots publicly viewable, perhaps checkboxes for optionally making it completely private or friend-only. Actually, I can see where I might want to have the option to allow only certain friends from my contacts see or check into a spot. What do you think about that?
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate? This would definitely be fun. Would also be great to be able to set up a Spot just for a specific friend, so you could send them on a personal treasure hunt.
-
Inappropriate? To reiterate, we're big fans of this idea — but the implications of actually building it out are a bit complex... that means: expect this to be a continued conversation, but do not expect it to happen any time soon.
I’m glad you like my idea

Just throwin' ideas out there :) I'm still wrapping my head around Gowalla the way it is. -
Inappropriate? So here's a variant on this idea. I'm a long time user of brightkite, so I like the notion of checking in to random places. How about letting us check in to a temporarily named random spot with optional comment and maybe even optional photo. I'd like that to push to twitter and facebook. I don't really see the need for these to be permanent spots. It's just a way for me to let my peeps know where I am and what I'm up to. I could make all these random places I visit into full gowalla spots, but I personally don't see the point in this. I am in the quality over quantity camp of creating interesting spots.

Inappropriate?I'm not sure I like this idea. This would lead to spot spamming I think. Also, I like dropping an item for a friend and there be the possibility that someone will snatch it up before he can get to it.

I think this should be considered :) -
I agree with Steve. -
Inappropriate?Somewhat along the same lines: I think it would be a good idea to be able to filter the list on the phone to only see the locations where your friends have been.
My friend is on vacation in Hawaii now and he's leaving some markers he thinks we must see, when we go there in a week. It would be great to be able to filter out and see only those on the map or in the list.
