Gowalla API
I know this probably only appeals to the geek fringe, but have you thought about providing an API for Gowalla? This would allow Gowalla players to create their own visualizations and mash-ups, and may lead to good ideas/code to integrate into the main Gowalla application.

Inappropriate?Hey Todd — We've designed Gowalla with a future API in mind. I honestly have no idea whatsoever when this might happen. But yeah, it will be really cool when we get it out the door.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Any update on this? Love to look at including you guys in socialgreat.com

Hey Jon — I'm going to hook you up with Scott, our CTO. Wanna shoot me an email? josh at alamofire ... -
Inappropriate?I've got an idea or two for a Gowalla companion app, too -- definitely curious about the API. For my ideas, I'd only need read-only (I would think write access would be tricky, as it might be difficult to ensure integrity of check-ins).
-
Inappropriate?API aside, any plans to expose user activity via RSS/Atom? We'd love to support Gowalla on Cliqset.

Inappropriate?Waiting for API, we too!
Plenty of creative ideas are waiting to be executed, I hope you'll make us happy soon.
I’m thankful

Josh commented on a topic recently (can't remember which one now) in which he said the API would be released in a few days.... -
Inappropriate? We're still working hard on the API. We want to get it out ASAP. Still a few more details to clean up. Thanks for your patience!
-
Inappropriate?looking forward to your api for implementing / incorporating it in http://fbfriendfinder.com . Already added Foursquare. Do you have a cautious timeframe / releaseschedule?
great succes!
I’m excited

I'm getting excited Roeland! Would be awesome if you add Gowalla to FBFF. -
Inappropriate? So many of the other feedback suggestions could quickly be satisfied by outside developers as soon as an API is available. For proof, look at how many external apps FourSquares is already got using it.

this is one of the best points

Good point! -
Inappropriate?combining Gowalla Foursquare Latitude FireEagle and other updating services into one would definitely be the way to go!
-
That sounds cool! -
I felt I should add a "disagree" vote to this, because I feel strongly against any kind of "combining". For me, Gowalla and Foursquare are two completely different types of apps - one's a location-based social network, the other is a location-based collectables game. There's a huge reason why I tired of Foursquare quickly but continue to love Gowalla, and it's due to the different ways people use each. I don't want to know - or really care - where other people are and what they're doing, and I certainly don't want them to know what I'm doing all the time or where I am. That's the whole point of Foursquare. But Gowalla adds a geocaching game element that can be enjoyed alone without having to broadcast everywhere and to everyone what you're the "king of". Conversely, the game element of Foursquare just doesn't work, because it's too easy to cheat.
Just my 2 cents. -
Steve:
I agree completely with you that what sucks about Foursquare is how easy it is to cheat. But, you're assuming that a Gowalla API would enable cheating. If it's done correctly, it doesn't have to. For example, a Gowalla API could be read-only.
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. -
Maybe I wasn't clear - it wasn't the cheating thing that concerns me.
I think what I meant was that a lot of people say "Gowalla and Foursquare" in the same breath as if they are similar services, that perform roughly the same function. But I think Gowalla won't - and shouldn't - compete with Foursquare. I try whenever I can to educate people on the differences between the two, and always try to call one a "social network" and the other "a geo-based collectibles game", or else it just becomes a "who's network is bigger" comparison. So any application that combines the two (via APIs) into one "i can check in on everything with one click" app is actually doing Gowalla a disservice by perpetuating the myth that the two services are essentially the same. -
Okay, but my point still stands: a read-only Gowalla API wouldn't enable people to "check in on everything with one click." -
A write API would help to get Gowalla on more platforms. API key request could block cheating. -
Inappropriate?i'd love to help test this out / alpha/beta test etc. working on an app for a raft of location-based games, and want to include gowalla into the mix. @sfamiliar on twitter -- hit me up.
I’m hopeful
