How should we handle home and work?
I'd really like to see some official feedback about what to do about Home and Work, preferably on the blog, maybe e-mail, so that the knowledge gets widely disseminated.
I've already seen one person create a place called "Home" which would obviously be a major problem if everyone did it. I'm thinking we really shouldn't be creating a spot for our home. Am I right about this? Or is there some way you see people handling their house/home location? The presence of all the "Home" icons under Architecture could easily give people the impression they're expected to create a location for their home.
Similarly, what should we do about the places we work? I can see how it would be useful if you worked at a bakery or some other retail establishment, but for those of use who work in big corporate offices I can't decide if it would be beneficial or detrimental to the system if many / most of us were to add in an entry for our office workplaces. What are you guys thinking?
###
Related suggestion: I can see the benefit of making a spot for home IF the system knew to treat it separately from other locations. It would only show up on your map/list of spots, and friends maps/lists of spots, and it would be named "<player name="true">'s home" and only you or your friends could check in there.
It could be a profile step similar to setting up your twitter and facebook. Go to your house and click the "I live here" button on the ____ page.

Also, I'm thinking the system should be culled of any "Home" or "My House" type locations until there's a way to handle them separately. </player>

Inappropriate?Good question, thanks for bringing it up.
We don't have any firm rules about this kind of thing, because we want users to be able to use Gowalla however they see fit. Some people don't want to check in at home/work, and others (like me) do. On the other hand, you're right that thousands of spots called "Home" would be a pain (which is why I named my home spot "Raymond Ranch").
I think work spots are much less problematic. If your office is in a big multi-tenant building, you might want to name the spot after the building, or you might want to create a specific spot. Either way is fine by us.
Longer-term (like, the next couple of months), we plan to add friends-only spots, exactly like you suggested. When you flag a spot as friends-only, it won't clutter up the list of spots for everyone else. In the meantime, I suggest just avoiding generic names like "Home".

Inappropriate?Maybe there could be a generic place called "home" which has no location in particular, which you can just check into to indicate that you're no longer at the last place you checked in to.
The way I see it working is that 'checked in at home' would appear on your profile page, but you couldn't click it to see who else is checked in there as it's not a physical location.
