Inconsistencies when spots are reported to be merged
This is in response to Brian's reply back to Gina on the topic: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/gowall...
I've noticed some inconsistencies when spots are reported to be merged. In most instances, the person reporting the duplicate spot to be merged is asking for the original one (earliest create date) to be retained, and to merge the newer one with it. Which is great, but there's a few where it's the opposite. Take for example Dr. Matt's thread: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/gowall... He recommends to keep his duplicate spot instead, just because it's created in the right spot and actually spelled correctly. There's a blurred line there, couldn't the first created spot have been moved and then spelled check instead? And then merge his spot with that first one? I just think it's not really fair to the first person that created the spot to have his/her spot deleted without checking with them or notifying them to fix their spot, especially if it was created in version 1.0.
I came across this same scenario over the weekend. I created a duplicate spot, because there was one that I believe was intended for the same location, yet it was across the highway and over 700m away. My intention was to create the spot so that the coordinates are documented and then report it back to you to move the first spot and then merge my spot with it. Which by the way, can you please move the original spot: http://gowalla.com/spots/19688 to where my spot is created: http://gowalla.com/spots/61491 and then merge mine with it? Thanks!
It would be awesome if we can somehow flag a spot and add a comment to it, which then notifies the spot creator to correct the spot. Or if we can have a dashboard of some kind of things to take care of, like xx # of spots need descriptions, xx # of spots which require some attention. I don't know if we'd want a time limit on it, as some players may neglect to go back to maintain the spot, but at that point, couldn't we report it to you guys to fix it manually? Just a thought. It'd just be a nice touch to check in with the first spot creator before deleting their spot.

Thanks so much for the detailed post! This is definitely something we're considering, and our rules aren't set in stone. Each merge situation/dupe is viewed with a particular amount of subjectivity. We would like the oldest ones to stay put, in general, and definitely recognize what you're saying about version 1. We're trying to be care with that.
Good news: very, very soon, we are going to ask for your help with merging some of these...so hang on to that list, and be prepared to put on your thinking cap!

Irene:
I got most of these but have some questions:
1) First set, 15114 & 24926, which is in the right spot?
2) Third set (Pican), 30226 & 56541, which is in the right spot?
3) 15024 & 43726 don't strike me as duplicates, did you copy the ids properly?
Respond to this here and we can close this one out. -
Thanks Todd, though of course I wish I could fix it myself. :o)
1. 15114 is in the right spot.
2. 56541 is in the right spot, but the original spot should be kept of course.
3. 15024 is correct, and I accidentally mistyped the other, which is 43276. -
OK, All of Irene's spots have been taken care of! -

Yay!! -
Prerequisites for such a lofty position in Gowalladom? -
I have a list here in Seattle as well ~ hang on to them for now? -
Awesome! I'll be eagerly waiting, with my thinking cap at hand! :o) -
Inappropriate? Here are some interesting case studies from the Seattle area:
Burke Museum
Original: http://gowalla.com/spots/11323 ~ created 6 months ago (1.1) (Me)
Dupe: http://gowalla.com/spots/42804 ~ created 19 days ago (1.2)
In this case, I wonder if the second visitor failed to shake it up, as the pins in each spot are quite close together. In this case I would choose to merge to mine because it was made with 1.1 and is 5 months older that the second one.
Fremont Bridge
Original: http://gowalla.com/spots/10257 ~ created 7 months ago (Natalie Greco ~ one of Seattle’s first players)
Dupe: http://gowalla.com/spots/26364 ~ created 1 month ago
In this case, the second visitor again seems to have failed to shake it up ~ these spots are within a foot of one another. I would choose to merge to the first one in this case as well.
Nickerson Street Saloon ~ within a day of one another, October 2009
Original: http://gowalla.com/spots/41565
Dupe: http://gowalla.com/spots/43317
Since these two were made within a day of one another with 1.2, I would merge them and credit both creators ~ too close to call.
Fremont Troll ~ featured spot included in ‘Fremont Freak Walk’
Original: http://gowalla.com/spots/10177 ~ created March 25, 2009
‘Freemont Troll’ ~ double dupe:
http://gowalla.com/spots/22957 ~ created 2 months ago
http://gowalla.com/spots/24405 ~ created 1 month ago
Since the Fremont Troll has been a featured spot for some time and is very easy to check in to, I would delete both dupes rather than to create a merge. Both were created with 1.2 and it seems unlikely that a player could miss the actual spot if they took the time to shake it up.
I’m hoping that super users will take time to evaluate merges.

These are all done, I assume that was you Beth ;) -
Inappropriate?I'm not sure what's going on...
I was just updating/editing some spots I've created recently and adding details to some others, and noticed that places I created, other people came along just this weekend and created duplicates. Lots of them.
I always go online usually within 24 hours and (somewhat anally) double check my spelling, pin point accuracy and details on the website so I know mine were right ;)
St Lawrence Market

Novotel - I just had this one merged cause I accidentally made it twice myself...
Original: http://gowalla.com/spots/77126
then 2 new ones just made:

Can a lovely Dev or EST member please look into this?
I'm off to look if there are any more...
Thanks!
I’m wondering what's up?
