Increase number of "Nearby spots"
There seems to have been an explosion of spots in London (my example because I live there), not necessarily all good ones, but it means that the nearby spots list is not entirely useful - perhaps doubling the number of nearby spots would help?
(Or stop people creating spots for their homes and their friend's houses)

Inappropriate? We are looking for ways to do better sorting of spots. It's definitely a big thing on our radar, as thousands and thousands of spots get created each week, making sure finding spots is easy, and also that it results in seeing the quality spots you're looking for. So keep your eyes peeled!

If the inane spots could be deleted that would be good ;) -
What, like Lenny the Left Lion?! -
Lenny is a statue - he's a landmark.
He is not "Home", "K's House", "Blah", "Here", "H", etc. Especially when there's no description, and a random category.
They are s a spot for spot's sake. -
I was teasing you! -
:( I tend to take everything seriously, it's a flaw. Sorry. -
No problems.
I still prefer Roger the Right Lion... ;^) -
Inappropriate?Being able to sort nearby spots by "most popular" - as you can do on the website - would certainly go a long way to helping this out - in my mind, a "checkin" is like a "thumbs up".
-
The problem is that some people checkin everywhere to increase their stamp count. -
Inappropriate?I would love to see an increase in the number of spots and/or a way to filter what you see. The one thing I don't want to see happen, tho, is the deletion of spots. If something is silly or inane to one person, that doesn't mean it is to the person that created the spot.

How are Home", "K's House", "Blah", "Here", "H", etc, of value to Gowalla?
Especially when there's no description, and a random category.
It's a spot for spot's sake. -
Inappropriate?Hey Jo, I totally agree with you on this problem of "crowded" spots. We actually were talking about this on another thread... think the best thing for the "mundane" is like what Steve says, maybe just don't check in.

Inappropriate?I'm new to Gowalla but am trying to get my head round the spot creation thing.
I like interesting spots, so I go there, check in, have a look around kinda spots. Trouble is, most people seem to create bus station, macdonalds, etc spots and I've started to fall into that trap too. And I've started just checking in at stuff I'm passing rather than actually having a look.
On the other hand whilst there's an interesting cast-iron victorian foot scraper in my street, it doesn't mean I'm rushing out to create that as a spot although at least that might make people look at the thing...
It's a sandbox so we can all just play the way we want to, especially if we get filters for spots but I prefer the concept of an open sand-pit where we all socialise
any thoughts?
I’m confused, undecided, inept

The app has got filters for nearby spots, splitting them into the different categories. Sometimes though, even this doesn't help when an area is heavily overpopulated with spots.
To me, Gowalla is whatever you want it to be. I've made both interesting and everyday spots, just like most others. -
Inappropriate?I've found that issue too, Jo. Especially when I went downtown today. I was in front of the Pike Place market in Seattle & wanted to check in to get the featured stamp. Yet it took a bit of juggling of my location to see it. Once I was at the sign itself, I was at 18 meters (said the app) yet it was still 5th or 6th down the list due to the explosion of other spots right in the same vicinity.
I'm really glad it's so popular in our city, as I'm still on Android & can't create spots. So having a plethora of places to check in is cool! But I *am* tired of seeing the generic "Home" "Doug's Pad" "Our House" spots.
And though they are perfectly valid spots, especially up here in the latte-soaked Pac NW, I must confess to being tired of seeing Starbucks spots too...lol I have already vowed never to create a Starbucks spot EVER, no matter how bare and non-Gowallafied a neighborhood may be...lol
