Make the website the spotting/checking tool the iPhone app is.
Not everyone is carrying around a smartphone like a Blackberry, an Android or a iPhone/iPod Touch. Maybe all we have is a web browser accessible. So being able to use the actual Gowalla website as the spotting/checking tool would probably be a smart move. I for one have no iPhone/iTouch thus rendering the whole deal sort of useless.

Inappropriate?Just to be clear, you want to play Gowalla with your laptop, checking into, say, The Alamo in San Antonio with your Dell in tow?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I'm for allowing check-ins from the website as long as the website is being accessed by a GPS-enabled device. Gowalla should never allow a check-in or spot creation without GPS-verification of the location. Doing so would result in inaccurate spot locations and encourage cheating.

Thats basically the only point of hesitation I had in posting this idea because of the websites core concept. At this point, I only have a non-smart phone with basic websurfing capabilities, thus why I started this topic. Going the way of the laptop is definitely overkill, I agree, even for netbook-standards. -
Inappropriate?I dont own an iPhone and I want to check in to gowalla. I don't care much about the game portion or cheating, I want to share my location with my friends.
-
Inappropriate? If you don't have an iPhone and you're not interested in the game portion, may I suggest Brightkite? It works on any device and is great for sharing your location with your friends.

Inappropriate?I'm on numerous other location services - I like trying new services as this is a really fun space. I'm saying allowing web checkins and the new audience it enables is more important than the percentage of users might check in from a place they're not really at.

I believe the point of Gowalla is about sharing new spots one discovers and not necessarily about where one is. If its just to share your current location, then jcroft's suggestion of Brighkite is a better option. I see Gowalla as Uncover without the dead part. -
I think I am the only one that believes this, but – to me – Gowalla is not a social networking tool to tell your buddies where you're currently grabbing a pint so much as a traveling game more akin to Geocaching.
If you aren't wanting to collect stamps, drop items at spots or record your physical travels in a virtual passport, then Gowalla really isn't the right application for your needs. -
You're not the only one that believes that at all, Dr. :) -
Although I say there is a social side to Gowalla, it's not really about social networking - so I'm with the doctor. Gowalla is a game first and foremost.
The whole concept of Gowalla (in my view) is to actually visit places, stamp your virtual passport and collect or swap goodies. The social side comes when you involve friends in this, which increases the fun element. -
Inappropriate? We definitely want to expand the number of devices you can use with Gowalla (and soon!), but GPS and accurate location will still be a big part of that.
Thanks for all the great thoughts and discussion.

Inappropriate?I agree, Brightkite, Foursquare, or Loopt is much better for social networking. I don't think all of these service should be carbon-copies and provide all the same services (one of the current problems as I see it). I think the geocaching reference is appropriate. I like that Gowalla is tied to GPS and sets it apart. I could write a thesis, but there are some days when I wish I could create a spot I forgot from the web, and then I think, well, that would ruin it. I'll just have to go back. I think it defeats the purpose of "checking in" otherwise. Inconvenient for people without GPS I realize, but there are other services for that. My 25 cents worth.
