Inappropriate?I believe there's an Android version being sorted, so expect Gowalla to be on other platforms in the future!

Inappropriate? Why not just make a web app that would work on any platform with a browser?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? One of the things that is integral to Gowalla is the GPS function. We definitely want people with non-iPhones to be able to enjoy Gowalla, but we also want to make sure we don't mess up the experience and useability by not addressing the GPS/check-in aspect of it.
Having said that, we are pursuing this: having a version that works cross-platform is an obvious plus, and is a high-priority. Thanks for bearing with us as we work to ensure that the app is consistently awesome across all platforms, be it an iPhone app or a web-version. -
Inappropriate? How about a web app for people not using iPhones?

Using Gowalla without an iPhone.

Inappropriate?Ruby, I think what Jonathan is getting at is that GPS is an essential part of the Gowalla game. You can't use Gowalla without GPS (unlike most other phone-based apps and games, even other location-based ones like Foursquare). Speaking generally, a web-based application doesn't have access to the GPS hardware in phones, and therefore it wouldn't be possible to build a Gowalla web app. Native apps (like an iPhone app, and Andriod app, and Blackberry app, etc.) do have access to the GPS hardware.
That having been said, there are some recent efforts to provide web apps access to the GPS in smartphones via a Javascript API. This now exists on the iPhone, as of the 3.0 software update (but is irrelevant to Gowalla, since Gowalla has a native iPhone app). I believe the latest version of Andriod also supports web apps accessing a phone's GPS, so a web app may be a valid solution for Andriod.
As far as I know, there's no way for a web app to access the GPS in Blackberries or Pre. I expect that to change in the relatively near future, though.
Bottom line: a web app version of Gowalla may provide some increased compatibility (I believe it would work on Andriod and iPhone, and that's about it), but it certainly would not "work on any platform with a browser," because most platforms with a browser don't let that browser access the phone's GPS.
I’m just telling it like it is.

Inappropriate?I didn't realize Gowalla could only get location information through GPS. Why not let us add addresses manually? Too much cheating?
I’m saying "meh"
-
Yep. Manually adding addresses would mean some people would check in without actually visiting the spot, which defeats the purpose of Gowalla. -
Inappropriate?Once you have a web app (for Android and every mobile platform that supports the JavaScript Geocoding API in the future), it should be relatively simple to port that web app to Palm Pre, as apps there are developed with HTML, JavaScript & stuff.
Also, Palm supports the Geocoding API for "native" apps, probably they *are* in fact supporting the Geocoding API for normal web apps, too? (I don't know that, I'm just guessing.)
I’m confident

What Seb said. WebOS makes things pretty simple to port over, assuming they were web based.
Looking forward to trying it out, but need it on my phone. :)
