Seriously guys, this is on our to-do list, and now that 2.0 is mostly done and soon to be released to the public, it's much, much higher on our list than it was 6 months ago.
I believe we track all the state information last.fm requests now, so it will be relatively simple to implement but we also need to create a way to manage scrobbling settings, add them to the app and make the look and feel consistent with the rest of the app, then of course we have to test it and make sure it performs and is stable. None of this stuff is particularly hard, but it does all take time and we've been doing a *lot* these past 6 months, as you will all see soon.

Hi Andrea,
This is something we're definitely all for! We like Last.fm, and having interoperability with your musiclife in general is something we believe in.
That being said, we (unfortunately) don't have the resources right this moment to make that happen. We're working on so many big updates to Grooveshark and Grooveshark Lite, that a lot of side-ideas that would be awesome get pushed to the backburner. On the plus side, however, we're planning to release the Grooveshark API very soon, which should allow anyone out there to do all kinds of cool stuff with all of our offerings. Hopefully someone out there would be willing to help all of us out with some kind of Grooveshark+Last.fm functionality.
In the meantime, we'll keep you updated on any changes we make, and the more we hear from you guys, the much more likely it is to happen sooner.
Thanks again, Andrea, and I hope this answers your question!
I’m hopeful

This is the one feature keeping me from really loving grooveshark and using it on a daily basis, ultimately making it my third choice in music listening (local media>lastfm>grooveshark or hypem). It's frustrating that an app this amazing and promising is immediately lowered a few notches just by missing an extremely simple function that is scrobbling. I can't help but think the only reason this hasn't been implemented is because they view last.fm as a competitor and would rather just avoid it, but I do hope thats not the case. It's strange that these guys present themselves as so open to new ideas, but essentially put aside the most popular suggestion on here. Not to mention the "wait for the api" response was 8 months ago, surely the few dozen lines of code needed to implement a scrobbler script in the player (or server-side) would take less than 8 months.
Grooveshark could be my media player, but right now its just a site to link when I want to share a tune with a friend. Still great, but could so easily be so much more. This year, last.fm gets my vote.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I second this feature! At our office we have our sound system hooked up to our office last.fm account so people on the internet can always see what our office has been listening to lately We would love to be able to do this with Grooveshark!
I’m also hopeful!

That's a really cool office you're in! Unfortunately I don't have any updates on this ATM, but again we'll let ya know when we've knocked it out. :) -

Inappropriate?Hi Nathan, I am one of the developers here at Grooveshark, and I understand your frustration! I would also like to have a last.fm scrobbler, and I can assure you that it *is* on our to-do list. Unfortunately, so are a billion other things, and although a lot of users have asked for it, more pressing things keep coming up. The last.fm API is pretty straightforward, but they do ask you to keep track of a lot of extra state information, some of which is not currently tracked by our player. The framework is being updated to include the level of tracking that last.fm requires, so once that part is done, it could be a simple weekend project for us to finally get scrobbling support built in.
In the meantime, keep your eye out for some cool new enhancements that will hopefully also help to make Grooveshark easier and more fun to use. -

from what it looks like, you guys have all of the data to do a basic submission... -
Inappropriate?i'm happy to hear that :) but it wold be nice to port it to libre.fm as well. it's a new open source project utilizing *the same* audioscrobbler api, so it won't be too much work.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?another thing that would be cool is to somehow allow you to import your last.fm library? not sure if the benefits would be that great, but i think there is probably an rss feed to do this with. i just found grooveshark which has saved me from creating my own personally streaming server. nice.

Inappropriate? With last.fm scrobbling this could very well turn into my primary music player at work. And as Nathan has mentioned it's totally disappointing to see the feature seems to be left out intentionally which is why I only use it for a quick look up of songs once in a while.

Inappropriate?Come on then, where is it?!
Even Spotify has a last.fm scrobbler (but Spotify is SO ANNOYING)!
A scrobbler is not hard to make!
Come on guys - as a comment on your blog rightly quotes:
"If I didn't scrobble it, did I really listen to it?" - No, and will stop listening, probably!
I’m WAITING!
-
Inappropriate?Hey, don't give up on this feature! :) (and pls, don't make it VIP-exclusive)
I’m waiting! ;)

Inappropriate?I worked on a simple..the most basic music app you can think off and off the bat I managed to add last.fm support. Now I really dont believe yoru claim that your software does not have the capability to handle last.fm's API.
If an app with a play, pause, rewind button, library and nothing else can support it, I know you guys can. I can just imagine how small my code blueprint is in comparison to yours.
Now common sense tells me hey last.fm and grooveshark are in the same business model. So is obvious you guys are trying to stray away from linking to last.fm (no free promotion to the enemy)and is understandable business 101. But when you promote open & all or a few of your fans ask for this simple option why not give it to them? -
Inappropriate?Seriously guys, this is on our to-do list, and now that 2.0 is mostly done and soon to be released to the public, it's much, much higher on our list than it was 6 months ago.

Inappropriate?Well...
As I see it, this has been on your to-do list for a year now. That means you've been working on a 2.0 release of grooveshark for a year, while your fans were waiting for a feature that was really a bit late about a year ago.
You could've spend a few days on a feature that was really much needed before you started working on the 2.0 version and nothing would've been amiss. You can convince me of a great deal, but not that during this whole year you've only had more pressing matters to work on. It's just not possible.
Not to mention, you should have told us in your first post that it was going to take more than a few weeks. If you only read the posts, instead of watching the time between them, you would suspect the feature was going to be here by next week, if not tomorrow.
I don't say I like Grooveshark less for it, but as a company, toward your users, I think you've got your priorities completely wrong...
I’m undecided
-
Giving an attitude is not going to help the situation. Jay said it is on their to-do list. They have a million things to do and something as small as Last.FM support, which doesn't concern the whole user base as many other features/bugs they have planned do, is not going to be on the top of the list.
Many things have came up between when this feature was mentioned and now. As Jay said, they want to make sure that 2.0 is stable before working on extra features. Just give them time and you will have your Last.FM support. If you cannot wait, then goto http://grooveshark.com/jobs and apply for a job. If you get accepted, you can work on it yourself.
Thanks,
James Hartig -
James, I get your point, but when the company says "This is something we're definitely all for [but] we don't have the resources right this moment to make that happen.", I think it's normal that people get impatient for a feature that is popular (at least here on getsatisfaction) and doesn't seem that hard to do. (There are plenty of third-party scrobblers, for example for deezer, youtube and myspace.) -
Inappropriate? This is a really simple thing to do, why is it taking so long? This is the only reason I'm not using Grooveshark. I find last.fm really useful.
I’m frustrated
-
Apparently it's not as simple as it seemed, but it is now according the reply above: http://getsatisfaction.com/grooveshar...
I'm also waiting for last.fm support to start using grooveshark. :)
Spotify works so nicely -in general and with last.fm- that I can be patient. :) -
Inappropriate?Every time we get close to having time to work on this a bunch of other stuff gets piled on top. That said, barring any major surprises, I'm expecting this feature to make it into the release after next (next release goes out some time this week). Keep in mind that all new features are released to VIP members only so they can try it out and give us feedback on it, so I can't say when it will be available to *everyone,* but at least we're pretty close to being able to actually write the code for it.
You guys might be a bit surprised to find that scrobbling support is actually not a very popular feature request according to the surveys we have run; it just happens that those of you who want it *really* want it. Essentially everything that has been given priority over this is either due to working on features that are more popular or more profitable. There are still a few feature requests that are more popular than scrobbling support, but we do want you to be happy, and besides it's a fun project. I'll post an update when the feature has been added to the VIP-only preview section of Grooveshark.
