Way to disable URL shortening frame
I'd love to be able to disable the frame that is shown by default on all ow.ly links.
I assume maybe this is a for-pay feature that might be available when payment options are available?
Either way, for now the frame is keeping me from using Brightkit's URL shortening. There are just too many other URL shortening options out there that don't have frames or anything of the sort, so there's no real reason to use Brightkits when it adds the frame.

Inappropriate? The reason we have it now is to help spread the word about BrightKit, gaining us more exposure, helping us grow and keep improving the app. Perhaps removing it could be an option for paying accounts when we begin charging for the app.
Also, we're adding more sophisticated stats in the coming week or so, which ow.ly URL shortening is essential for. The upside may outweigh the downside in that respect.
Thanks for taking the time to post up your feedback, it's much appreciated! -
Inappropriate?I also would pay money for this as a 'premium feature'. I don't believe you need to remove the entire frame - it can be handy later for something like 'rate this page' or 'forward to a friend' or 'retweet this' - but removing the branding would be worth paying for.

Inappropriate?I agree I'm not sure if we'll be able to use this for our company until you offer the option to remove or rebrand frame. I would be willing to pay for that though.

Inappropriate?Hi everyone,
We realize not everyone likes the frame on ow.ly links.
We will be making a change that allows users to turn this header on or off.
Lots of users are using the frame on ow.ly links to display their AdSense ads and thereby earn revenue from their tweets... but we realize that not everyone will want to do this.
Hope this helps. Thanks for the feedback.

That's great news. Thanks for listening. -
Inappropriate?Thank you - I love that you hear, and act on customer opinions. It's a great site and a great service. I really enjoy it.
I’m anxious for this option

Inappropriate?I think it shouldn't just be an option to disable the frame -- I think the frames should be completely abolished. Services like ow.ly and adjix.com are making Twitter a frustrating place to use.
Here's another thread about it:
http://getsatisfaction.com/hootsuite/...
Here are specific details on why frame-based redirection is spammy and annoying to users:

I think posting ow.ly links is like sending your followers an unsolicited popup ad.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I definitely don't like the frame. It feels like a breach of trust. I'm sending people to a site but they get forced ads and banner. It should be - in my opinion - disabled by default. People who want to add it can then choose to do so. But yes, I really think its a bad idea. I like the stats but it's a close call as to whether I'm prepared to breach people's trust who click on the links I send. So I'd REALLY like to see this frame removed.

It's a total breach of trust. It hijacks the browser so you can't control your address bar anymore. The URL never changes even when you browse to a different page -- and it's not the page's actual URL to begin with. -
Inappropriate? How's the frame-abolishing coming? This is definitely my MOST wanted feature change on hootsuite. Lately I've been doing all my links in bit.ly and copy-pasting into hootsuite. bit.ly still tracks links, but with no annoying frame. I've had followers saying they ignore my links because of the frames --- not cool.

I unfollow people who send me ow.ly links or any kind of frame-based redirects. -
Inappropriate?Hi Alex,
This is definitely still on our radar. Right now we're working on some other features that we think our users will enjoy, but we do realize this is an important one!
Thanks for the feedback. -
AWESOME! By the way --- If it's an issue of trying to get some advertising to cover costs of operation, I would GLADLY pay a monthly fee for your product with integrated stats and no framed URL redirection. Your service is VERY valuable, and I can't wait to see what else is on your radar! -
Right now this is the biggest issue I have with HootSuite. I realize I'm not the only person you're trying to please, but I think this issue is holding a lot of people back from wider adoption. -
Inappropriate?Hi all,
We've just rolled out an update to ow.ly that lets your followers choose whether they want to see the ow.ly social bar or not.

See the drop-down to the right of the close box? If you click that, you'll see a checkbox that says "Always hide the ow.ly social bar on this machine."
If you click that checkbox, any further visits to ow.ly links will redirect you straight to the target URL.
The bar itself is also much improved -- it's thinner, has a built in Twitter search tool and "most popular links" area, and allows spiders through (so your pages get all the Google juice they deserve).
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. -
Inappropriate?I'm not sure you guys are completely aware of what you have here. This is a great service and fits perfectly with a launch I am preparing for a large organization. However, the frame issue is really a deal killer for us. I agree with James, I think a lot of organizations would like to use this service but like us are holding back. There has got to be more money in businesses like ours than in framing links. We could pay for the service. We can't have our links framed. Not at all. I would really like to see this resolved soon. Otherwise we will use bit.ly or another solution.
I've seen mention of a paid option in posts from a month ago. Is there any update to that?
I’m disappointed.

Inappropriate?Hi Doug--
Yes, we are still considering paid account options that may include (among other features) an option to turn off the ow.ly social bar.
At the moment we're focused on some improvements to the interface and making HootSuite a great free tool, but paid accounts are something we've been thinking a lot about.
Thanks for the feedback. -
Thanks for the reply. By adding a revenue stream you could also beef up your available developer resources to deliver those improvements more rapidly. There is clearly a market here and HootSuite is in a great position, but that can change quickly. My humble suggestion is to capitalize on that while the window is open. Looking forward to new developments. -
Inappropriate?Looks like CoTweet is all over this now. http://cotweet.com/ They are offering multi user management and integration with bit.ly which does not frame URLs. I noticed that the New York Times and Google both use HootSuite to post on Twitter but bit.ly for URL shortner. With CoTweet now available how long will that last? Really need to get an option in place where links are not framed or you will cut yourself out of lucrative business.

Inappropriate?I'll join the chorus of people who urge HootSuite to start acting ETHICALLY and stop framing other people's content with your own advertising links ("get the word out...").
I'm blocking ALL posts via HootSuite -- I won't even see them, so if you want your posts read by honest, ethical people, find another tool instead of this crap from an unethical, dishonest company.
