HP DV1000 - overheats - shuts down
I purchased an HP DV1000 becasue we had purchased many at work. My PC worked up until the warranty expired. I have replaced the cooling fan and tested using other memory chips, hard drives, the wireless card, etc... The PC is not worth replacing a mother board - I am back to using an old dell inspiron with XP. If they want by business again at home or at work (A Large Semi-Conductor Company) - HP needs to either recall or offer discounts to people with these faulty PC's.

Inappropriate?Yes, claire had a similar problem. Makes me wonder about overheating laptops and which ones are most prone to this problem.

Inappropriate? Is this for real? a lawsuit against HP?
http://www.sfmslaw.com/pages/cases.ph...
and here is an interesting twist re: laptop video chips

I’m undecided

Inappropriate?Thanks - Claire
I did fill out the info for the class action lawsuit - it does not hurt to try
I contacted HP (somebody in India - of course) and they offered to fix my PC for a flat fee of $420.00 and they will give just a 90 day warranty on it after repair. They recomended replacing the motherboard, video card
and processor. What a lousy offer - I have read some comments from people who had the repairs and the problems are reoccurring after the PC is rebuilt
they must really like losing business !!! -
Inappropriate? One more comment - the HP rep
had the nerve to ask me if I travel with my PC laptop
He suggested that the problem may have been caused
by my carrying my laptop around.
First: No, I don't - I only use it at home - I have another laptop at work
(A dell that has been all over the country with me)
Second: That is the primary purpose of buying a portable laptop !!!
Starting this weekend from now on I will be posting negative reviews
on websites unless one of the three HP rep's suppossedly listening and participaiting on this site contact me. -
Inappropriate?I have this reheating problem too.
Also dont travel with it and it is incredably frustrating. I filled in the Class Action appplication too.
I’m FRUSTRATED

Inappropriate?I have an hp pavillion dv1000 too. Same problem of shutting down, but even worse. When I bought the PC in USA, for US 950, the battery wasn`t working already. I was traveling around, so I couldn`t take it somewhere, `cause every 3 or 4 days I was somewhere else. When I finnaly got home, I contacted HP Brasil, and they where nice to tell me 30 min later that since I bought it in US, I needed to solve the problem there. Well, I wasn`t in US, and wouldn`t be there for a while. I finally figured that I could go online and talk to the representative online, which I did. After another hour talking, she said there was nothing she could do `cause my warranty was expired. I had no money to buy a new battery, so I had a laptop that I could only use with AC power... My dad figured out that there was nothing wrong with my battery, but he wasn`t able to make it work on the laptop.
8 months later my laptop acted weird after installing Yahoo Messenger, and from there on it started to give me the message that I needed to backup my documents because the HD drive had an error. 11 months later the laptop wasn`t turning on anymore. I bought a new HD drive and it was just fine again. A month later guess what? the AC power cord had problems, so I spend money on an universal cord so I could use my laptop again. Then, 14 months later it started to shut of. Bought a vent to use under the laptop and it helped, but it is getting worse. Tried to clean my vent, but these laptop is build so that you can`t take it appart, and pay HP to do it for you. Today, reading forums and all, I figured that you have to take everything appart to reach the vent. Isn`t that ridiculous?
I`m really frustrated, don`t know what to do. I definitely won`t buy another HP unless HP fixes this problem. Lots of other people have the same issues, and nobody can tell me how to fix this.
I’m frustrated and mad

Inappropriate?I have an HP Insiron laptop dv8000. It is doing the exact same thing. It suddenly shuts down, and cannot be powered on again until some time has passed. I believe it is overheating. I spent $1,300 on this laptop. It was a premium upgraded laptop(supposedly) when I bought it. I am furious. My warranty is expired. Does anyone know how I might fix this myself?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? Here is the manual you are looking for for a DV8000.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/...
For the DV1000 the repair manual is
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/...
These are available on the HP website; just tricky to find.
Good Luck and let know how it works, but hearing from other people they are having mixed results even when HP does the repairs, -
Inappropriate?PC Support techy:
perhaps you could help educate me on something i'm tracking with my dv5000 which has had overheating/random shutdown disease.
after the problems began i installed a small app to monitor the running temps of both cpu's, hard drive, etc.
i have used the hp ac adapter that came with the laptop until very recently when i switched it out with the hp ac adapter that came with the laptop docking station i also purchased from hp.
the watts are imprinted on the ac adapter blocks. the ac adapter that came with the laptop is 90W while the ac adapter that came with the docking station is 65W.
there is no discernible difference in performance but i have noticed that when using the 65W lower wattage adapter, the monitored temperature of the 2 CPUs is about 20 degrees F lower than when using the higher wattage adapter. the 65W adapter block seems to be hotter, but the CPU's seem to run cooler (altho the temps themselves are "hot")
am i imagining all this or does it sound logical?
would love to get feedback from someone who actually knows something about electronics, lol.
thanks.

Inappropriate?oh, and just in case any of you aren't aware of this similar thread - here is the URL:

Inappropriate?Another disappointed HP consumer....I said goodbye to my HP laptop today....same problems overheating...shutting down...a dual fan underneath helped for a bit...but it was just too much....it appears as if the hard drive is toast and no telling about the motherboard...the screen is now black.....I will not be purchasing another HP....Typing this from a Dell I am contemplating
-
Inappropriate?I am having the exact same problem with my dv1624nr (dv1000).
1.6ghz processor and can't convert mpg to avi....because it overheats and shutsdown....this is a 40mb mpg video file that i am trying to convert to divx avi file....fairly simple process.....and yes, i am using the correct software settings, codec, etc etc....trust me i know what i'm doing...this laptop sucks, it was good when i first got it.
I have 3 HP laptops and 1 Compaq Laptops. Compaq seems to be ok, but it's fairly new, 2 of my hp laptops have the overheating issue and the other 17" widescreen HP has a bad lcd....just went out one day and it's going to cost $300 to fix (HP must be smoking crack)
.....thinking about selling it to someone, but either i have to lie to them and tell them everything works fine (everything does work fine, except for the dreaded overheating disease) or tell them the truth and probably not sell it....either way, i'm screwed....f()ck HP...I will never buy another PC/Laptop from them.....
I’m dangerously frustrated
-
Inappropriate?uhhhh, most of us have the RAM that was installed by the manufacturer of the laptops - HP. are you saying HP has put the wrong RAM into the laptops they sell?
-
Inappropriate?I currently fix this laptop DV1000 for this problem... Has anyone thought it might be the BIOS. I have an ACER doing the very same thing... I downloaded the BIOS update it never over heated again. Tech. Depatment is it a BIOS issue?

Inappropriate?same problem with dv1000. Can convert large video files to diff. formats, cant watch videos, just read emails. I realised that the problem was due to overheating. My solution, take a large metal tray of something and place the laptop on it. This will work as a heat sink. Prop up the laptop so that the hot air has a vent to escape. AND, this is the most important, use a 21 inch fan to blow air at the laptop. Now, that what i did and could finally run it for 5 hrs continuosly to create a video dvd. Phew, somuch for a 'laptop'..never again HP...may you die in this recession...

Inappropriate? My Dv 1000 has been shutting down without warning for over a year..It started doing it abot a year after purchase. I sent it back to HP and they fixed it ..Sort of.. It started doing it again just out of warranty.. HP made it sound like Iwas the only one experiencing this problem... guess not...2 weeks ago it shut off completley.. Will not fire up at all.. pos..

Inappropriate?I purchase a dv1000 18 months ago. It shuts down in the middle of run of spysweeper or when watching videos online. Reformatted HD and reinstalled XP with sp3 and fresh software install. Problem persists.Frustrating and disappointing.
-
Inappropriate?I've been having this problem for almost two years now. I got an HP DV1000 as a graduation gift in 2006, and it shuts down on me whenever I try to convert a video file from Windows Movie Maker format to Windows Media Player format or when I try to play a game. It's been doing this for almost a couple years now. Really annoying and I wish I had the money for a new computer. I'm never buying a Hewshit Packard again.
-
Inappropriate?DV 1000 problems here also. I did get them to change wireless card, and hard drive. now still having problems with the wireless and the tech is saying that HP had a recall on the DV 2000 and they are replacing the motherboard. And yes mine runs a bit warm too.
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here. Mine started doing it over a year ago. It has been in the closet for about 10 months. I had to go back to using my old laptop. I did not have any luck with support either after fighting with a language barrier for about 30 minutes I gave up (I don't speak arabic or whatever it is) and even took it to a local repair center and they told me that it would cost around $500 to fix and would most likely start doing it again because it is a manufacturer's defect. All of my hardware is HP for home and for my business but if this is not resolved my future hardware will be of another brand.

Inappropriate?Mark another down for faulty dv1000. My laptop has overheating problems and constantly cycles between DC and on Battery power states and occasionally the random shutdown due to overheating. This has been going on for around 2 years now probably. I remember reading somewhere it was due to overheating and the DC power jack solder melting and could be fixed by soldering a new jack onto the motherboard. Before I realized this I ordered a new battery in an attempt to fix the problem at the price of 70$ which was absolutely no help. By this point I see no reason to dump anymore money into this piece of junk machine or in HP in general. Once I get fed up with this or the machine finally dies im going to do some serious research into a decent netbook as a replacement.
I am seriously hoping for some form of action from HP though I doubt we will see any considering the age of the product. I hope the class action lawsuit has some results because HP is at extreme fault here and they are taking no responsibility at all.
This is just another example of a scumbag corporation being run by scumbags looking out for their scumbag corporate interests. I am sorry HP but you have lost not just me as a customer but I sincerely hope many more until you address this problem earnestly and not just offering ridiculous discounts on over priced repairs. -
Inappropriate? My HP DV1000 custom ordered, upgraded laptop, over $1600, died for good months ago. Before this, it did the same as most others with the same complaint and shut down constantly, sometimes doing nothing. I only traveled with this laptop once, over two years ago. It sat on a desk as my home computer. I tried using cooling fans to no avail. What really irks me is to find out that this is due to a manufacturing defect and that HP is not stepping up to the plate. I found all this info about HP's bad faith by accident, looking for possible solutions to the problems.
I did sign up for the Class Action also. I am with all of you who will warn all consumers to beware of HP products on review sites of HP products, because they will not fix their mistakes, and often make them from what I have read. I can tolerate a mistake, but not a company who does not step up to the plate and act honorably to fix them.
To charge to fix a problem, only guarantee that iffy fix for 3 months, and to still ended up with a LEMON is really unconscionable of HP. HP has burned these people twice. How can anyone trust them?
I should think that HP would want to make good on all of these failed products. In the end, it will be much cheaper than the bad Public Relations they are creating.
It's time to pay attention to why DELL has good customer service ratings. I was fooled by some report that HP had improved. Wish I would have bought the DELL, like my friends, whose computers still run just great.
My mom's $250 E-Machine is seven years old and has never had a problem. I learned that it was their company policy to build solid machines so they didn't loose money on problem computers. What a concept!
So HP, what say you?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? My husband and I got our HP dv1000 as our first laptop 3 years ago, we spent a good $1800 on it. At first we had alot of problums with it just shuting down and not turning on, we had a warranty on it from the store we got it from, however the warranty ran out after about a year, and ever since we have had MANY more problums. We have replaced the power cord 2 times, Payed several hundred $$$ for techs to "fix it" and within a month messes up again! We where SOOOO sick of it so we decided to get a mac! WE LOVE IT! No problums yet and still works like the day we got it 3 months ago (wish I could say the same for my dv1000) Now I am tring once again to fix the HP so my husband has a laptop to take to work with him but nothing seams to work, it over heats so fast that I dont even have time to get in to the BIOS. I really wish HP would take action. My whole family from my parents my sister and myself all own Hp/compaq but if they dont help with this problum I know our families will all switch to another brand. Maybe we will all be mac users!
I’m Frustrated and upset!
-
Inappropriate?I spoke to an atty from the firm handling the suit (that claire provided the link for). They recommended filling out the form and keeping ALL receipts and the laptop itself until after the proceedings are finalized.
-
Inappropriate?I have the exact same problem. Can the processor be replaced? Very disappointed with HP. Over the years I've had my family and friends buy HP products because I work for the company. They use to build good quality products, not anymore. All you are paying for is the label mounted on something that is not true HP. With that said I no longer buy or support HP products.
I’m very disappointed!
-
Inappropriate? You don't seem to understand planned obsolescence. That's how big companies like HP make money.
-
Inappropriate?i have the same problem with a dv1000 laptop. shuts down after 10 minutes of use and is hot to the touch on the bottom. The warranty is gone and i refuse to pay over $400 to repair it when I can just buy another brand that won't give me as much trouble. Amazing that more people haven't sued them.
